True, but if someone kicks over your lawn ornament and then stares silently at you, it's probably a bit much to start shooting.

But that's not what happened. They attempted to kill Burnham. I doubt the Torchbearer was out there to give her a hug.

He could have. Also, Burnham stepped on their sacred relic thing without permission. And it was after that Georgiou signalled that they come in peace, you cannot say that and then shoot!

I think the Klingons massacring half of the fleet might have something to do with that.

I don't think the Geneva Convention gives you that kind of an out. A value is a value, it shouldn't just be dropped in a time of duress. Especially for a Starfleet captain, those are supposed to be the best of the best of the best.

So you have an issue with her shooting first, but then try to explain away the Geneva Convention violation?

Lorca had eye surgery and appears to be Caucasian, despite claiming to have what one would assume is an Asian occupational heredity.

Is it possible that Gabriel only had two eye-lids before his surgery?
Lorca could have an Asian ancestor, I think fortune cookies are an America thing anyway.

I am not exactly thrilled about the Geneva convention thing, but that's not really the same. We don't even know if the convention is the same in the future. And they were going to bomb that ship one way or another anyway, that was clearly established.

That simply isn't how the military works. We have been lulled into a false sense of what the military will allow you to get away with in Star Trek. But, 99% of the actions taken by people who go against orders would have them locked away for a good long time, regardless of outcome.
But, but , but Starfleet is not the military (ducks behind sofa)

Burnham brings the Geneva Convention up in "Context is for Kings".

Do not piss on the right to bear arms, bare knees and bare bullets.

I could be wrong, but I somehow doubt they came to the conclusion that boobytrapping dead bodies was somehow acceptable.
Possibly not. But spirit of that article is to protect people, possibly even civilians that may came to collect bodies after the battle. As I said, they were gonna bomb that Klingon ship one way or another. But sure, it is questionable, and I prefer if the writers would have used a different sort of ruse here.

SECTION 31 is basically like the Borg in that they got overused, overexposed, and misused pretty much constantly after DS9. The EU especially.

However, this actually seems like a decent place to use them (if S31 is what they are) as they have the Klingon Jihadists on one side versus Federation idealism on the other.

One thing I haven't seen talked about much - why (in-universe) put Burnham with Tilly? My best guess is that Lorca is testing Tilly, seeing how much she'll tell Burnham etc., just as we see him testing Burnham in other ways. Which would mean he's monitoring them in quarters - appropriate for a prisoner, perhaps, but not great conduct toward a cadet.
They are kind of what the other needs. Burnham is withdrawn and self-loathing, Tilly is socially awkward and needs to learn to interact, not the worst pairing. Discovery seems to be the Starfleet equivalent of The Island of Misfit Toys and getting the crew to grow, bond and work together could be both Lorca being a good Starfleet type Captain doing a positive thing as well as a means to get to his ends.
