In context I'm going with yes, especially given the (I think) overblown lens flare jibe that was the klingon beacon. So far there seems a fair degree of self or fandom referential comments being thrown in quite cleverly

I'm not really sure it's any more fictional nonsense science than subspace, or transporters, or any other magic that we see in Star Trek. Instead of a fictional particle or a fictional other dimension, we have a fictional connection between these fungi. Doesn't strike me as any more fantastical.

Which means their primary loyalty is to Earth and Starfleet, not necessarily the Federation. They’re only still around by the Federation’s time by being underground. Sloan said they have no facilities, so they’re like an unofficial Secret Society at a college...or the KKK...they keep their beliefs to themselves, and act out whenever they can get away with it, and not be caught by Starfleet proper.

Yes, they existed before the Federation, but no, their existence was fully sanctioned in the Starfleet Charter, Article 14, Section 31 (hence the name) at its founding.

Just the science, and the Frankenstein lower decks, etc that are iffy.

I didn't much like her this episode, but I suspect she could grow on me. Much like a fungus hiding in Stamets' lab, no doubt.

That was great, enjoyed it and if you want to hook viewers then that probably should have been the first episode, even though the prologue was still good. Like the characters on the ship and Lorca is going to be great. He could either tread the line ethics wise or turn out to be a full on villain, which is what I think when I see Jason Isaacs and may have been the reason a captain isn't the main character. The stuff on the Glenn was gruesome, very Alien-like. It's dark but there is a war going on. 9/10.

I should clarify also that I really like the actress (Rekha Sharma I think?), it's just her character I find to be an asshole. Just to clarify. I don't want it to seem like the actress herself isn't doing a good job, because damn.

Anyway, yeah, there are always going to be assholes. I like that no one is perfect, not even our vaunted and much loved (by me) protagonist. I bet even Tilly has a flawed, dark side... nah. She's too adorkable. Anyway, yeah, I say this as a good thing.

I think they made a a conscious decision to vary the characters and their likability / motives, thus far.

Media reviewers will generally be positive regardless, given the 'progressive' nature of the show. Ghostbusters 2016 got positive film critic reviews.

It really comes down to audience reactions when it comes to TV shows.

For whatever reason, STD is at 58% on RT with audiences polled and sinking.

Liked this. Is it a section 31 ship? Its not so obscure a thing that it wasn't a major plot point in a movie, so its a definite possibility. Getting a bad guy vibe too from captain Malfoy though, hope its not cause he's British, I'm British, we're not all bad.

Not really worse than the TMP transporter accident, the infamous TNG exploding head, TWOK earworms, the mess 8472 made of the borg, not to mention numerous horrors the TOS special effects weren't up to really delivering on.

Agreed though it was a solid episode which managed to introduce a whole new crew, set the scene for the rest of the season and entertain.

Not really worse than the TMP transporter accident, the infamous TNG exploding head, TWOK earworms, the mess 8472 made of the borg, not to mention numerous horrors the TOS special effects weren't up to really delivering on.

Agreed though it was a solid episode which managed to introduce a whole new crew, set the scene for the rest of the season and entertain.

The TNG female gold-shirt that gets caught in an anomaly bubble and ends up dead, frozen in the deck-plating was also pretty horrific (In Theory).

Not to mention murdered Klingons floating around with pools of zero-gee blood...
