If they can control where the spores send them in the phone booth, why not just send a million troops to Kronos and be done with it?

Can they? I didn't see anybody going anywhere in that scene...

Strange that there seems to be the understanding that Burnham started the war which we all know is rubbish after T'Kuvmas actions, it was such an obvious setup in hindsight.

What understanding? Nobody seems to blame Burnham for the war. Only for the battle in which those 8000 lives were lost. Or that's the accusation the Crazy Lady makes specifically, with the bit about the Europa and all.

That's a big shuttle bay for a ship that is supposedly in the same size range as the TOS Constitution class

Big? It has spots for three shuttles - but no hangarage, no chance of taking them underfloor or abovedecks or to any of the three sides. If anything, it's less capable than Kirk's. Which is of course fine.

Tilly's manner at first reminded of the aliens in Galaxy Quest. I'm sure they'll show more sides of her, but she did seem a bit of a silly character at the start of this. In the long run though I think she'll give the show heart.

Lorca I thought was A+. Isaacs is from the same mould as other great British TV actors such as Andrew Lincoln, Daniel Lewis and David Morrissey. Like all of them, I'm sure he'll deliver an intense bravado performance at all times. I just hope ultimately he is one of the good guys. It'd be a shame if he was ever killed off and written out.

Saru, I like. I believe nearly everyone will. A classic trek archetype that is bound to catch on.

Stamets doesn't suffer fools gladly, but he was more likable to me than how he'd been billed.

The big question in all this is Burnham. I understand the producers having her stay understated and brooding. Obviously with the Vulcan background and her court martial, she's bound to be unhappy and stern. I hope they don't repeat the mistake they made early Sisko though, and confuse having her seem un-emotional with gravitas.

All in all I was pretty happy with the episode. Some really promising stuff has been set up!

Wow. I know people are always going to have differing opinions, but if you didn't like this episode, then I don't know what you want from this series!

Well, to be fair, I think it's radically different from any of the other series or movies, even the Kelvinverse, so naturally people are trying to adapt to it and trying to form their opinions of it. Some might just take longer as the episodes air, to do so. I don't think it necessarily means they don't know what they want out of it.

Lol, what?

Should "bad science" ever become a subject at MIT or something, at least 80% of examples should come from Star Trek. So much "science" in Trek is so utterly ridiculous, it's almost impossible to single out the worst of it.

Well, there is someone without a Brain walking by remote control.

And then there is Faster-Than-Light travel space mushroom network.

Both of those things are pretty ridicilous. But one of them takes the cake. And it's not the one with Spock in it. It's the one that takes itself super serious and tries to tell a grimdark war story. That includes FTL-mushrooms.

This episode is not how I was expecting Discovery to be whatsoever...not AT ALL, and it was such a shocking revelation as I watched it. It was an amazing feeling to be completely surprised and blown away in shock from watching Star Trek and seeing something I had never expected or seen before. SO much dark and grit, so much douche and comedy, but also so spacey and fantasy. This series quite literally has a little bit of everything in it. The show is definitely not like anything I would expect from Trek, and I am totally on board for it!

I am looking forward to the relationship Saru and Michael develop in their post-mutiny lives, and I don't think I can possibly get enough of Tilly.

I think this is what drives some toward it and others away from it...

It's DIFFERENT. Sometimes, when I'm watching...I find myself torn because it's "not Star Trek-like" but then, I force myself to turn that off and just watch and be enveloped by what i'm seeing.

When I do that, I find that I'm having a blast...and that is the journey that matters, not the destination.

I'm not really sure it's any more fictional nonsense science than subspace, or transporters, or any other magic that we see in Star Trek. Instead of a fictional particle or a fictional other dimension, we have a fictional connection between these fungi. Doesn't strike me as any more fantastical.

I'm not so sure about Section 31, I'm getting more of an X Files vibe from Lorca's ship. Just...odd.

Thought this was a step down from the pilot, but I'm still enjoying it. Mind you, I watched (and purchased) all of Voyager too...

Not to mention people from distinct races mating.

According to our poll, this is the best-received episode so far, with the average score of 7.65.

The Vulcan Hello holds an average score of 6.7, Battle at the Binary Stars is at 7.46.

Curious how the actual ratings are doing as far as streaming is concerned. Since this is not a standard broadcast show, none of the Nielson conventions apply. I'm hoping that CBSAA streaming statistics closely match our own opinion polls.

You pretty much nailed it yourself: One thing is science. Bad science at times, but science. The other thing is magic.

Teleporters, FTL-travel, alien biology and universal translaters is stuff your scientist friend is thinking about when he's stoned. Galaxy spanning shroom networks is something your stoner friend is thinking about when he's stoned.

Seems that my personal rating of these episodes is the exact opposite to the prevailing opinion of the forum.
