I thought it was a really strong episode. Yeah some of the Discovery crew do come off a little dickish for Starfleet officers, and it was a more sinister kind of environment than I was expecting for this show, but it did make for a compelling hour as we watch Burnham try to make sense of all the strange stuff going on. And I like the idea that she suddenly becomes one of the more honorable and upstanding officers on this ship, and one of the few (besides Saru) that we can actually trust.

Apparently they still use C++ and Microsoft Windows in the 23rd century. There's a reference to NTDLL.DLL in this screencap:

I didn't care much for the first two but this episode felt a lot more like Star Trek. I have no problem so far with the attitudes of some of the officers towards Burnham. If she is perceived to have started a war and also mutinied then it is perfectly understandable that she is a hate figure. I also don't think that Lorca is a bad guy. I think he is being set up as an avatar to discuss the morality of warfare and whether or not it is right to try and win at all costs, and exploring that sort of question is what Star Trek does best, so if that's where it's leading I would be quite happy with that.

Lorca's hints at exploration after the war has ended.

Alien beasties and life forms.

Saru. He seemed to have a little more development here than in the first two episodes.

The design lineage. I can fully believe that Discovery is a progression of the NX-01 era and the USS Kelvin time period. I liked the little nods to past Treks in the form of the food synthesizers, data chips and the design of the shuttles. I don't get why people keep insisting this is a reboot when nothing yet doesn't fit into canon (even the Blingons in theory).

The little nerd nuggets for us older fans were well appreciated. The Tribble. The Gorn skeleton. The Preserver obelisk. The hint at Spock. The continued reuse of old sound effects (although I was sad that the Discovery bridge didn't use the TOS sound effects like the Shenzou did).

The old book and the use of Alice in Wonderland. I thought this was a lovely nod to the use of classic literature previously in Trek and past characters' love for traditional books and equipment.

Hardly any Blingons.

Dislikes

Rekha Sharma's security chief had zero depth and screamed "one dimensional obsequious bad girl" like the classic villain's lackey of old (even if Lorca doesn't end up being a bad guy). I hope her character doesn't remain this way.

Still no Shazad Latif and Wilson Cruz. I get that the show is angling for the more serialised nature of modern TV, but I always liked that during the Berman era the ensemble casts all had things to do, That seemed to be the right direction. Here we seem to have regressed back to TOS, or even pre-TOS, with the focus mostly on the main stars, particularly Burnham. It seems strange to me that three episodes in and we still haven't met some of the main crew.

Tilly is not yet my cup of tea. I liked that they have cast an atypical actress for the role who doesn't fit the sexy goddess profile. But so far I found her annoying rather than endearing. She feels Wesley Crusher and Harry Kim-ish. I've never been too keen on the brilliant cadet trope so I hope the character doesn't go down that road. Plus why is a cadet working on a top secret experiment and why is she going on dangerous away teams missions when there is an entire ship of better train officers?

On the fence

The dark tone of the show. Design wise I can handle it since it makes sense canon wise. But when this war is over they need to lighten things up in general. Trek is not doom and gloom every episode.

Hated

The gore. Sorry, but this isn't necessary in Trek. Not to this degree. I like Trek to be accessible to kids and I wouldn't want to show a kid a mangled body that had ribs exposed.

Frustrated

The trailer for next week. More pew pew pew. Blingons again. Yawn. Hope there is more to the episode than just that. After a better start this week I am loathe for more mindless action.

Not overly impressed with this episode either. Just feels off.
And is "My friend" a replacement for "My partner" if it's between two men on this series?

Hope it gets better.

Didn't like how that was handled.

The romantic subtext was obvious and fine, however they played to stereotype a little too much imo

Last week was a prologue this felt like a proper pilot for Discovery.........so many questions. Really look forward to getting the answers. Reading the book by David Mack this week really helped explain Saru and Burnham's dynamic. Loved his reaction when the shuttle warped away..........

I read the Rotten Tomatoes User Review, and see that some of them said that "This is not Star Trek". So, my question is, what is Star Trek?

We got a brief shot of airiam the robot on the bridge.

Goldsman did a good job directing.

Trek is many things. I'd love to see them define Trek in such a way as to include all the previous episodes but exclude Discovery.

While there has been "darker" episodes in trek before, usually the entire series isn't "dark". The main area in which (so far) discovery differs for me is that it has a very dark tone. We will have to see how it continues as we move forward, and personally I don't mind something a little different.

But i think a lot of hardcore fans like the idealism that star trek represents, the higher values of humanity in the future. If Discovery remains how it is, i can see how they would be turned off.

I really liked this episode. They should have made this one a two-hour pilot, mixed with flashbacks from the first two episodes in my opninion.

Yeah, the show is a bit dark, but it's war time. I wonder how funny and light it is in Syria right now...

I think this show will lighten up somewhat next season...

Liked Tilly and the chasing scene onboard the Glenn reminded me of Enterprise's Impulse episode, which I loved.

I'm officially on board!

An odd episode. I like the smartass science guy being a tool to the main character and I liked when the alien basically told the main character she was shit and sucked at her job. Quirky girl was a bit much but I liked that she exists but she could be toned down a bit or not so many foibles in one chick. Captain guy was alright. The plot was strange and had some weird beats with the dumb mystery shit keeping information from the characters but lets fill them in on the shuttle trip in the worst delivery for some reason and more "as you know" crappy dialogue between those two gay/straight guys. It should have been better.

So why Discovery is not Star Trek? The Series Title is Star Trek, the one who make it is the owner of the franchise called Star Trek. Even Roddenberry son is involve in it. So why Discovery is not Star Trek? The people who have the right of the title of Star Trek call it Star Trek, so why is it not Star Trek?

Am I the only one who liked Tilly? Sort of reminded me of Barclay. And I like that she's not a sexy, slim, "eye candy" actress there to attract teen boys. I like that the cast feels, generally, like real people i'd encounter out in the world.

I loved Tilly actually. And I get notes of Hoshi Sato in her character. She comes off to me as a real person, not perfect, not quite "Starfleet" yet. I LOVE that. I love that she's nervous and looks like she may even have anxiety issues as well. Humans are all different. Seeing someone like her, someone not quite sure of herself or the universe, it's awesome and feels like reality. And we'll get to see her go from this to someone more sure of her self, probably with Burnham's help.

I did, but I have a weakness for redheads...

I liked that she was completely competent and in control when in the moment - she was the one who demanded that the Klingon come out of the shadows, for instance. They didn't make her out to be a weak link in a pressure situation, which I feared after her introduction.

Awesome episode:

Likes:

- The Discovery is a beautiful ship. I like the darker interiors. I'm not the biggest fan of harsh bright lighting in general and i was never a fan of the bright lighting on the bridges of the Enterprise - D and Voyager.

- Captain Lorca. I like the mystery around him, the shades of grey and the fact that there is something predatory about him as well. Jason Issacs gives Lorca tons of presence and i had the sense that Lorca owns every room he walks into. I want to know more about Lorca's menagerie and what 'kitty' is and how did it end up on the Glenn. Also, I love that he had a standing desk in his ready room. It reminded me of a certain Admiral from another sci-fi series.

- Saru. His interactions with Burnham were well done. He's clearly happy to see her, but also hurt and disappointed. I'm glad that Saru didn't let Burnham off the hook so easily, but that once she had proven herself he became a bit more trusting. Saru is an interesting choice for Lorca's first officer. I feel like Lorca has chosen him for a purpose, maybe because he views him as soft and someone who isn't strong enough to question orders?

- The 'Sporedrive'. It's bizarre and weird and out there and I love it. It doesn't quite make sense to me yet but i want to know more about how it works.

- The Gore. I liked the realism of the fatal injuries to the crew of the Glenn. A warp drive accident and probable failure of the inertial dampeners should cause injuries like what we saw. It added a level of danger to space travel that I haven't experienced in Star Trek before.

- Tilly. I really like her and i feel like she is supposed to be irritating. There is a fish out of water element and a sense of innocence to her. I think Tilly will be a grounding element for Burnham and help us see her softer side. Burnham needs someone that she isn't going to butt heads with and I can see a relationship similar to the Georgiou/Burnham relationship forming.

- Kitty. Cool monster. Where did come from and what is Lorca going to do with it.

Dislikes:

- The episode did feel a little rushed. I felt like i was just getting into it and the episode was over. I'd be happy for episodes to start getting stretched out to a full hour.

- Landry. I'm not a huge fan of Rekha Sharma but we'll see how Landry develops

Overall I'd give it an 8/10. Looking forward to next week!
