"Face to face with Klingon vessels, the U.S.S. Shenzhou prepares for the possibility of war if negotiations fail. Amidst the turmoil, Burnham looks back to her Vulcan upbringing for guidance." - Memory Alpha

I'm kinda stunned it begins with a dull flashback. Now is not the time!!!

I guess Daddy Sarek is dropping his little girl off for her first day at school?

I thought both episodes were pretty good, with the second being the better of the two. All those Star Trek sound effects were a bit distracting though.

Great eps. Was wondering (with others) if NCC-1031 had anything to do with black ops.

Yeah. I thought that it was an interesting choice. They had the TOS beep-oh-bops mixed along side Voyager's klaxon.

It was like they just random pulled stuff out of the Star Trek SFX goodie bag.

As many speculated, Georgiou is dead. Do you think we'll keep seeing her in flashbacks? I hope so, I thought Michelle Yeoh did a great job. Sad to see her go.

I am worried about the quality of the stories they can tell when they have about 37 minutes per episode. This is less than The Orville which runs about five minutes longer.

Why was the disclipinary board at the end veiled by shadows? Up to now, all boards in Star Trek have been in the full light.

It's definitely an interesting choice to go the entire two-hour premiere without actually seeing the title ship or several of the stars. I'm a little disappointed that we had two hero-ships for the obvious reason; it had started to sound like the Shenzhou would be around for the entire season from behind the scenes chatter about Michelle Yeoh being on-set and the stages being reconfigured to represent either ship. And, to be fair, I'm sure we'll still see a lot more of the Shenzhou— the flashback at the beginning of the episode wasn't that compelling on its own, and suggests we'll have a parallel "Seven Years Earlier" storyline on an ongoing basis. I've just come around to the view that being killed off is among the least interesting things that can happen to a character.

I wonder what the deal was with the second cloaked ship. Looked like a big sucker, and we didn't seem to see all of it.

All the weird TNG-era sounds did sort of pull me out (the hailing beep, especially, and more than the sets and uniforms- I guess sounds are like smells when it comes to TV nostalgia), but I was unreasonably happy they used the TOS transporter ring when the console activated. Now, all we need is some blocky old-school TOS-style hull markings to clear the TMP-era pennants on the Europa from my mind.

The other fit-and-finish thing that bothered me was that all the Klingon subtitles used straight-quotes and apostrophes instead of proper curly ones, except at the very beginning of this episode, where it briefly used curly quotes when T'Kuvma was quoting the other Klingons, but then switched back to straight when he was "quoting" what they should be saying. I mean, not using typographers quotes is bad enough, but switching back and forth makes it seem like somebody didn't know what they were doing.

Both episodes were above average. I wish they had been better. So now we're going to have a come-to-jesus-in-a-prison scene ala Voy. They just can't quit repeating shit, can they?

I'm giving both episodes an 8. There is a lot of potential here. It seems like they're setting up Michael Burnham to have the arc Tom Paris should have had but didn't. (I detect the hand of Kirsten Beyer at work.) Saru is a very interesting character, and I like the concept of his species being raised as livestock, but I wish we'd met more regulars during this one.

I wish they hadn't killed off Captain Georgiou but I figured she was doomed when she was credited as a Special Guest Star. Definitely did NOT expect them to kill T'Kuvma.

I strongly suspect that the "Black Fleet" (which I know we've heard before but still) and the obsession with retrieving bodies and the fact that Michael wasn't able to retrieve Georgiou's body will lead to zombie Kilngons (and zombie Georgiou).

In summary: an excellent teaser. Give me the real story now.

I think it will. I've thought that ever since the first ship reveal had it coming out of an asteroid. I think this is going to be some type of secret ship.
