Star Trek Continues, Episode 5....

Perhaps we should have a thread discussing Uhura in Fan Trek, or more generally the growth of female characters in TOS-based fan Trek. I think if Continues puts a woman in charge, it's going to be their new character, not any TOS female character. This is a great discussion, but it's smack in the middle of the Continues thread, and it will be hard to find if somebody wants to find it.

Barbreader, that's a great idea! Perhaps you could start that thread?

GScnitzer, that recounting of the shoot for "Pursuit" is fascinating but also a delight to read. Thank you for sharing it!

We also were working on a script for Nichelle. She approached us after Walter and George spoke glowingly of their experience with us. We wrote a cool script (somewhat contrived) where Uhura had to rescue a famous African Earth leader--something like Mandela or King--except a grandmotherly woman (Nichelle). "But I wanted to play Uhura again--like Walter and George got to revisit their old characters." We couldn't figure out a way to make it all work without dipping into the time travel or flashback well too many times.

Probably too late now, but couldn't it be done as a flashback as opposed to time travel?

Yes it could. That's why I said we'd be "dipping into the time travel or flashback well one too many times." We were looking for the way of incorporating Nichelle that's not a time travel or simple flashback story.

STC has stated on the FB page that they will soon be announcing the release date for Ep. 5.

Cool! They announced a pending announcement! I thought we were the only ones who did that. (I guess it's the sincerest form of flattery.)

I've noticed them doing this sort of thing as long as I've been watching STC. A day to a few days before they release information (a guest star, episode release date, whatever) they announce it's soon forthcoming.

So if not today--their announcement was actually yesterday--then we should hear within the next few days regarding Ep. 5's release date.

I'm hoping for mid to late September. :)

I think GSchnitzer's point was that he and the New Voyages team have operated this way since long before Star Trek Continues came along.

Well, it was meant to be somewhat self-critical. I'm never wild about announcing pending announcements--even when we do it. At least in this case, they announced what the announcement is going to be: a release date. The one that drives me crazy is announcing that a big announcement is forthcoming without announcing the nature of the information--and then the big announcement ends up being spectacularly underwhelming. "We revamped our website! We bought a new high-end dolly! We've purchased new socks!"

STC announced that they will be premiering Episode 5 on Friday, 9/25 at the Salt Lake Comic Con. I am guessing that it will be streamed to the public at 12 midnight. They are also indicating that Kickstarter backers will have an early viewing. (I wonder if that's for all backer levels since there wasn't a specific early viewing incentive reward for Episode 5).

Sweet! And I was hoping for mid to late September. :techman:

One thing you can say about fan productions--it's easier for them to keep their stardates in consistent chronological order.

Yay! This is great news. I just wish they'd give the episode a name...
