If fan film makers want to use it, they should perhaps show the occasional red or blue wraparound on other crewmembers as well, if for no other reason than to reinforce the internal logic of the thing.

I always thought that variant was reserved for captains and above. It does help set the captain off visually from other crew-members, both because of the style difference and the more "true-green" hue vs. the "stealth" green of the gold tunic.

I don't remember ever seeing Kirk wear it when he beamed down, however. Garrovick does on Exeter, though.

You are absolutely correct. In many naval traditions, a ship's captain gets a second uniform, referred to as a "command variant," to wear at his discretion in order to "set him apart" from the other officers. That's what the so-called "green wraparound" is. (In the TNG era, it is the suede jacket with quilted shoulders and gray undershirt which Picard occasionally wore.) No officers but captains ever would, or ever could, wear a command variant uniform.

Kirk were it in "The Enemy Within" as well. So it made two appearances during the early first season.

He wore it in "Court Martial" and he packed it in his suitcase in "This Side of Paradise."

Part of the problem with the green wraparound in most fan films is that it's not tailored properly. The one Vic wears in STC looks fine, but Jimm's in Exeter is pretty ill-fitting, loose around the neck and baggy-looking. I desperately want to CG his regular gold uniform shirt onto him.

I've recently gotten another reason to look forward to Ep. 5. We recently purchased a Samsung 58in. SMART HD LED television that has the Vimeo app included in Samsung's Smart Hub. Now I can watch the STC episodes directly on our big flatscreen without having to download them first.
