Star Trek Continues Ep. 5: "Divided We Stand"...(spoilers)

i really enjoyed most of Mind Sifter. Read the story 40 years ago (!) and always wanted to see it filmed.great story, loved Spock and especially the new McCoy. Unfortunately, the new P II Kirk is just awful. Completely unrecognizable as Kirk whether in distress or even at the end. He just has no presence or charisma at all. James Cawley didn't do a "shatner" Kirk but was a very charismatic leader. Of course, Brian Gross can't get near the same bridge as Vic Mignogna's Kirk.

Although this isn't the thread for New Voyages, I have to agree that I liked James Cawley in the Kirk role for the same reason. There was a charisma there- and when he dialed it down, I really enjoyed him in the lead. World Enough and Time for the New Voyages win.

Brian Gross maybe a "better" actor, however I believe that James Cawley makes a better Kirk.

You got it.

Besides, who here would dare disagree with the King of the Wicker People?

Best. Nom De Plume. Ever.

Finally got round to watching.

Never finished 'White Iris', for some reason found strangely soporific.

But DWS - for it's all faults (too bored/lazy to go into) - engaged me both in both narrative and character. Came to TOS late, but that felt like something they might have made back then. If anything, I'd say the production values/re-enactments were even better :) And storytelling/editing skills of STC have greatly improved.

The one thing I found disconcerting was Dr Mbenga. I really liked the actor, and his character's prominence in story, but something in his cadences kept throwing me out.

His performance strikes me the same way Michael Gambon's Dumbledore does before David Yates (in the one aspect of his direction I accept without reservation) corralled him and had him both dial down the histrionics and at least try to channel Richard Harris's take on the character; in playing the character in his own way, without seeming to acknowledge the previous actor, the performance rings false. Not entirely, as scripting makes the character use a certain set of terminology and phrasing, but it throws the cadence off and makes the actor sound like he's just reciting the words, without providing the information they're supposed to impart.

You hear this a lot in low budget films that have characters speak other languages, without using a dialog coach to have them sound like they know what they're saying.

One thing that this series needs is McCoy and Spock bickering. It occurred to me that this episode would have been perfect for Kirk's response to McCoy and Spock at the end of Patterns of Force. "Gentlemen, gentlemen, we've just been through one civil war, let's not start another." Bring on the bickerfests, it needs them.

I loved it. Though, I did find the use of "Charlie is My Darling" a bit distracting.
Well here is a kick in the head for you. "Charlie Is Our Darling" is actually a version of an original Civil War song called "Johnny is My Darling."

They've release a short BTS video about the scoring which mentions that. I knew that theme sounded familiar.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if "Johnny Is My Darling" was gonna be distracting, but when I realised it was a Civil War era piece, I couldn't resist using it. I thought it would work for Billy. I wrote another "Civil War Theme" that is played on the violin over the campfire for just a moment. It was going to be the main motif for the "earthbound" scenes but "Johnny..." eventually took over.

Here's an interesting tidbit. You remember the scene from "The Savage Curtain" when Lincoln beams onto the Enterprise and "taped" music is played in the transporter room? Well, I took that theme and wrote a cue around it when Lincoln appears toward the end of "Divided We Stand". Vic opted to have the scene play out without a music cue. If anyone is interested in hearing some unused cues from STC episode 4 and 5, shoot me a PM and I'll share some files.

Welcome aboard, Not Herbert! The scores for episodes 4 and 5 are amazing and I'm looking forward to more original music in future episodes. I'm also interested in hearing the unused cues so I'll PM you on that.

I couldn't find a link on your profile for a PM, so I've just tried to reach you through Facebook...

I believe you have to have at least 25 posts before you can send / receive PM's

Welcome Andy!
