Spoilers ST Strange New Worlds - Starships and Technology Season Two Discussion

Further notes:

- I don't know what's bigger anymore, but the Enterprise sparring room is way smaller than the equivalent room on Discovery. This one uses the swing room that's also a quarters set, while on Disco they use(d) the one shuttlebay wall; the latter was also part of a larger gym.

- Early in the sparring match, the pair seem to be accompanied by sci-fi sound effects for their hits and whooshes - almost like Anbo-jutsu. Oddly, it seems to be missing later on.

- That's a Denobulan cadet that Chief Jay is arguing with.

- Yes, the ship IS enormous, but is there not some regulation for how much STUFF you can pack with you? Where is Pelia keeping all her stuff? And how is this somehow more safe than her bunker in Vermont? Is she really going to display all that somewhere?

- The bridge attack is carried out with a photonic explosive, which won't be developed for a hundred years from whenever the past sequence is based. This is presumably the same tech that goes into ENT's photonic torpedoes, which we know to be antimatter explosives.

- The bridge itself is known to be one of the world's longest spans without saying where it goes. Logically, given the bridge's apparent direction right out into Lake Ontario, it would end up in Buffalo NY (bypassing Niagra Falls somehow), which is visible on the horizon from the CN Tower. IL-logically though, the economics of a giant bridge to Buffalo would itself be a work of science-fiction, IMO.

- REAL POUTINE SAUCE ISN'T JUST "GRAVY". Poutine sauce is its own sauce, and anyone who says otherwise will be attacked by one of our geese. (Source: am Canadian, and married a woman from the province that invented the stuff).

- SNW joins modern Trek in their use of PADDs basically as Facetime devices.

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a nonlinear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.

What else is in it?

La'an probably switched it off when she got knocked down.

For my part, I did find it a bit odd that the alternate timeline didn't have a Federation and Alt-Kirk's Earth apparently suffered worse (I inferred there were no Eugenics Wars due to Khan being killed off, but maybe still some conflict with the Romulan Empire? Might be wrong), yet the level of technology was conveniently similar.

Notably, the uniform tunics still featured the tiny departmental logos in the pattern, even though their badges had no such distinction. It doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist in this timeline, but who knows if they really would, beyond the producers not opting to create whole new uniforms for a couple brief scenes.

The department logo (or, at least, the command starburst) was visible on the graphic version of the alt-timeline badge on the wall-screen in Kirk's ready room.

Probably an oversight, given how much care they put into the alt-timeline graphics on the bridge.

But on the subject of the looks of things: the future continues to demonstrate some awesome makeup technology. La’an goes to bed and wakes up AND apparently spends the entire episode without once touching up her makeup, removing it for sleep, or for that matter fixing any of her intricate hair braiding. Whatever’s at work here, it deserves mention.

Early notes on 204:

- Ortegas may have served on, or is just a fan of the Walker-class starship. I really hope that the little model she had is not to scale with the much larger Enteprise model she (and Pike?) possess.

- Five years ago, the Starfleet symbology, tricorders and uniforms look the same as SNW standard from today. I’d be okay if they didn’t replicate “The Cage” uniforms and so on exactly, but as Zac Nguyen was the only one of the survivors they saw actually IN uniform in the present day, it would’ve been easy to do a one-off Cage uniform as a treat for the fans / or at least pour them into DSC era uniforms of either variant, the production warehouse should still have those available. And yes, I recognize that the briefing graphic had all three KIA listees in SNW duds.

- Chapel is head nurse, but is she effectively the second in command of the medical department after the CMO? She’s not a commissioned officer. This isn’t Discovery, but THOSE guys never saw their CMO until they jaunted to the future and we now generally assume Culber took over.

- Does a survey mission REALLY take two starships to do? We’re they in a rush somehow? Both ships were called away before long regardless. Have we seen or heard of multiple ships participating in a survey mission like this before?

- Amd following the supposition in 202 that Batel and the Cayuga are some sort of JAG-specialized ship having all sort of legal adventures around the galaxy, even THEY can get assigned a relatively boring survey mission. As it stands Pike gets his ship assigned a prisoner transfer run to rendezvous with the Cayuga at the end of the episode, so I’d like to think the latter ship has more legalese on her dedication plaque than the average Constitution / Sombra class ship.

- I’m not sure if Pike’s futuristic kitchen has some tech to keep things extra sanitary, but even I know that once you taste your spaghetti sauce, YOU DO NOT put the rest back in the pot like that!

Two ships participating in the same mission isn't unheard of. In "Obsession" the Enterprise has to hand off drugs to the Yorktown to deliver although the Enterprise could've done it alone. It's possible the Cayuga and Enterprise in e204 have overlapping patrol zones where Pike and Batel took advantage of a joint mission.

Understood, and there are assorted missions in TNG where the Enterprise is warping off to join forces with the USS Hood to do some terraforming mission or whatnot. I'm specifically asking about SURVEY missions though, which arguably depend on blue-shirted science nerds using sensors to catalogue gaseous anomalies. To my knowledge this hasn't been done before.

With both ships flying so close together, it's not like they're covering more territory (unless the moment we saw was a rare time when the two ships were flying closeby, as you suggested), or else they were taking advantage of two ships' worth of science nerds to get the job done faster. At which point, the question becomes why WOULD Starfleet need a SURVEY mission done quicker? It's not like the two stars they're surveying are going anywhere. Are they staking a claim before anyone else? Looking to place an outpost for political reasons? Starbucks sponsoring the mission for an aggressive expansion?

I'm guessing that they're prepping for an infrastructure build-out past Rigel/Beta Orionis...?

Considering the two captains are in a relationship then the actual reason for the two ships to rendezvous doesn't need to be a bulletproof reason. It could be as simple as "doubling survey efficiency on an anomaly bordering our patrol zones." ;)

Maybe two ships in proximity can create a virtual sensor dish larger than the two physical ones (similar to what is done with radio telescopes today.) Or while the science teams are surveying, the other crew are undergoing ship formation training or some such.
Never underestimate the tendency of an organization to layer additional training onto a mundane mission.

Or in close proximity both ships can combine their computer cores to analyse the data faster?
Communication Bandwidth & Frequency can go up with better Signal-to-Noise Ratio when you are closer.

That's a constant in Computer Science.

The physically closer you are, the better communications Bandwidth is at your disposal.

The farther you are, the lower the bandwidth options you have.
