SPOILERS - Wonder Woman 1984 - Review Thread

I thought the first Wonder Woman was OK at best, heavily emulating the MCU model, and Patty Jenkins was great at pulling a decent performance out of a mediocre Gal Gadot. Elena Anaya and Chris Pine made '17 Wonder Woman for me on hindsight.

Aquaman was a bit of a mess but a visual/action/comedy feast, Joker was the Logan of the DCEU (the best DC comic film since the Nolan Bat trilogy), Birds Of Prey still intrigues me, and Shazzam was a whimsical antidote to the growing MCU bombast and bloat.

Five OK to great films out of six (from '17 WW to '20 WW84) is not a shocking track record.

Is this a sports contest? 5 out of 6 generally wins the series.
I think I've seen most of it by now in review clips on YouTube. I'm not a massive fan of the previous WW movie and this one appears to dial the fantasy element up to 11. What's been shown of Pedro Pascal's acting makes him looks like he's on acid a lot of the time. Does it reveal why WW no longer has her invisible jet or her golden eagle armour in the BvS and JL movies?
Honestly, you should stop watching movies.
*Fuck Batman. No such human being ever has or ever could exist.
Apparently you've never met me.
this movie was awful. There's almost no action for the first hour, and then too much pointless action after that. Cheetahs heel turn was stupid and didn't make a lot of sense, Wonder Woman was barely in costume, the way Chris Pine's character came back was really gross when you think about it, and the segments in the Middle East were very 80s in the worst way. Max Lord was okay as a concept, but nothing amazing. The movie Mostly bored me, and if you told me it was made by completely different people then the first movie I would have believed you.

Overall, this is easily the worst non Snyder DCEU/etc film, which sucks because Wonder Woman is probably the best. when it comes down to it, while this is better than Batman v Superman or Man of Steel, it's nowhere near as good as the first Wonder Woman or Aquaman films, and I'd even put it below Suicide Squad, Justice League, or the Harley Quinn film.
I'm glad you liked it.

Even as a $5 film, the best parts are the opening flashback to Themyscira, and some of Gadot's scenes, with the major exception being her using the body of an individual to satisfy her desires.
And who among us has never done that?
Even if Not-Steve was dead at the point of the exchange, he--as a free man--still had no choice in becoming a body for Trevor to occupy and Diana to use.
He's dead Jim.
Either way, Diana willingly accepted this sickening act and tossed morality and consequences over her shoulder.
Well, if you've never been there, you aren't trying hard enough.
But Jenkins and Johns had no problem having the lead character commit such an immoral act, which is a total contrast from the Wonder Woman established in Batman v. Superman - Dawn of Justice and the Snyder co-written/co-produced Wonder Woman.
I like movies where the main character grows and changes.
Even when she renounced her wish, her behavior was that of a spoiled child who only places the toy back on the store shelf because his parents told him to do so, not because he has accepted that as a rule of life, he cannot (and should not) get everything he desires.
I kind of take your point, but look back to the opening monologue. She wishes she had paid more attention.
Which shows just how clueless she is, since the Themyscira scenes were the necessary set up to foreshadow Diana's selfish nature (only appearing in this film, thankfully) and willingness to do anything to get what she wanted. Without that scene, her behavior would seem even more out of place.
Well, yeah. That was the point.
This film was, apart from entertainment, intended to bring her from WW1 to , eventually, now. It's a bridge. It shows us Diana still being a hero in little ways, but keeping herself in the shadows. She is still, after decades, hurting over Steve. After this movie she has dealt with it, but still lacks a true connection to the present. BvsS shows her stepping out and getting involved again.

Not having seen the movie, but following my family and friends postings on Facebook, they all agree it's a bad movie; it does bring up a question.

The movie was originally scheduled to come out November 1, 2019, by before being moved to June 5, 2020, them being moved and postponed again due to COVID-19.

Do you think the studio and the director knew there were problems with the movie and moved the release date in order to do some quick reshoots/editing in order to fix these issues but the pandemic scuttled these plans and they decided to go ahead and put it out there as is?

No. The movie was well-reviewed leading up to its release, and it's the most successful film of a very bad year. The studio's happy with the performance of the thing. The fact that some people don't like a film is not something that major studios are unfamiliar with or panic about; they're concerned with whether it meets their expectations in terms of numbers. This is arguably difficult to gauge this year, but they've given an early greenlight to the third one based on the box office success of this one.

The fact that some ugly fanbois on Rotten Tomatoes want to sink it is...par for the course these days. They always fail.

Jesus Christ, spare us Screenrant.

Back when they tried to compete as an entertainment news blog, they couldn't break through - too late, too narrow and amateurish. So they've gone full clickbait.

I think it is funny and a great spoof of the movie.

Well, that was certainly a movie I watched...
Kinda hard to organise my thoughts on this one. It's wasn't *bad* exactly, just...really lacking in connective tissue.
Like the individual scenes were all fine and entertaining, with some great performances all around, and it's not like the plot lacked coherence; I was never at a loss as to what was going on and everything proceeded in a reasonably consistent internal logic...and yet there's something missing. The entire second act was basically rudderless.

Some of the Middle East stuff was just...oof! That'd be clumsy at the best of times, but when the movie has an Israeli in the lead role, that's really not a good look!

And I know this is a really nitpicky thing to mention, but what was the deal with the flying scene? Was she actually lassoing clouds? I mean she's a demigod, if you want her to fly, just have her fly. This feels like an unnecessary step...that also looked a bit too silly to my eyes. Also didn't the trailer have her swinging on lighting bolts instead for that scene? Don't get me wrong, that's still pretty ridiculous, but at least it's the more entertaining "cover of a metal album" brand of ridiculous, and has at least a bit more logic to it given the whole "daughter of Zeus" thing.

What all of these seems to add up to for me is that the script really could have done with another draft or two (or maybe one less!) And quite possibly some more time spent in the editing bay. All very unfortunate since I really enjoyed the first movie (despite it's rather flat third act) and I really wanted to enjoy this one more.

I think it is funny and a great spoof of the movie.
Good for you, but that's no reason to inflict it on everyone else.

Having had time to reflect on the movie, it is very much designed as an eighties movie. The plot very much reflects that aesthetic in terms of both story and pacing. The plane, taking over the body of some random guy, the long build up are all things that would not have been out of place in that decade.
