Actually, that's the best part. For the first time ever, Uhura finally got to be the female lead in a STAR TREK movie, instead of playing second fiddle to Ilia, Saavik, Carol Marcus, Gillian Armstrong, Valeris, Iman, etc.
After sitting patiently in the background for 43 years, it's about time Uhura got her moment in the sun!

Given that they had reintroduce the entire original cast, I'm glad they didn't try to squeeze in some brand-new love interest--especially when Uhura was sitting right there.

The OP (Joe Washington, in this case) wanted a discussion and opinions on Uhura and Spock's relationships. I merely pointed out where one was taking place where others had already posted their thoughts, where he could further find and engage posters.

If I wanted to hand out tickets, I'd have been snarky and snide, coming up some "clever" quip.

I only meant that there are duplicate (or close enough) threads all over the forum. It's hardly surprising, what with the number of posters here and subsequent rapid flow of the forum. No snark was intended, your post merely reminded me of a great line from Apocalypse Now: "Charging a man with murder in this place was like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500."

This doesn't make Spock "hot" it makes him just in touch with his human side. I totally buy the relationship. Uhura is brilliant, she loves music, like he does, and under the right circumstance - Uhura studying under him, instead of being just a shipmate, he had full opportunity to learn more about her, and seek her companionship.

It doesn't make Spock not hot, either.

I agree completely. Spock's appeal is in his conflict, his issues, his difficulties in both accepting and expressing his emotions. Here they went too far in dismantling what essentially is interesting in Spock.

I think the turbolift scene demonstrates his conflict and difficulties expressing his emotions better than anything I've ever seen before. And don't get me wrong, I do understand why people have a problem with the transporter scene, but all I'm saying is, his inner conflict and character were NOT destroyed by that scene. It's perfectly reasonable under the circumstances. Obviously, his head is messed up and he's reaching out to the only person he has a bond with at that moment.

Which probably makes him more appealing. I think kissing Uhura doesn't make him more appealing to women. It just makes women want to be Uhura.

We all want to be the "special one" who can get through to the unattainable man's vulnerable/gentle/affectionate side. It's kind of the same appeal that drew people to "The Thorn Birds" (Catholic Priest falls in love with one particular woman), or draws some women to gay men ("I can be woman enough to make him straight").

The Vulcan male has a similar appeal. I have nurtured a major crush on Spock since 1966 (yeah, lame, but it gets worse*), and I never thought he was physically all that attractive. Now that the very good-looking Zachary Quinto is in the role, it's even more difficult to not find Spock appealing.

*The "worse" part is that I ended up marrying a man who is very much like Spock - not only physically (though better-looking than Nimoy), but in terms of education and demeanor. There are some negatives to being involved with someone who is often emotionally detached. If the writers ever needed examples to write realistically about the difficulties a Spock/Uhura relationship might entail, they can call me up! (It still doesn't make me not love Spock, though!)

My husband is a mathematician who majored in physics (and minored in astronomy) in college. He's also tall, thin, and used to be dark, though now much of his hair is gray.

I personally did not care for it. I didnt hate it, but it just seemed "off" to me.

Now before I'm crucified for having said that, let me say that its not something that takes away from my enjoyment of the film. It does not spoil it for me or anything, but it did not work for me, personally.

You couldn't have gotten that impression from TOS, because Spock exhibited the desire to "penetrate one" on several occasions - and not always under the influence of scary flower spores or cave-dwelling in the cold with a scantly-garbed trollop.

I'm not saying I got it from anywhere, I am just saying that, for some reason, when I look at him, I just don't picture him as being that way, lol. I know he wanted to have his fun on occassion, I am just saying that my mind just can't wrap itself around Spock being a dirty Vulcan, haha (or half-Vulcan, anyways).

This isn't the Spock from the original universe. This is a character who's had some different experiences, whose planet and culture may be slightly different from the original series, and whose personality seems to be more openly emotional. He isn't going to react like the original Spock and I'm just fine with that. Let them do something different with this alternate universe. It's glaringly obvious that Spock and Uhura are having sex, have been in a relationship for some time, and are very serious about each other. Uhura was not just comforting her "good friend" in that scene. She was comforting her lover and he was seeking comfort from her.
