Spock and Uhura [SPOILERS]

Uhura was not just comforting her "good friend" in that scene. She was comforting her lover and he was seeking comfort from her.
You can believe that if you want to, and I'll think what I want. And I'll admit, I'm probably wrong - everyone I know seems to think so. But I'll wait for the novelization.

This isn't the Spock from the original universe. This is a character who's had some different experiences, whose planet and culture may be slightly different from the original series, and whose personality seems to be more openly emotional. He isn't going to react like the original Spock and I'm just fine with that. Let them do something different with this alternate universe. It's glaringly obvious that Spock and Uhura are having sex, have been in a relationship for some time, and are very serious about each other. That's the impression I got as well.

LOL! So I'm not the only one!

My husband is a mathematician who majored in physics (and minored in astronomy) in college. He's also tall, thin, and used to be dark, though now much of his hair is gray. ;)

I'm the one with the pointy ears...

Another Spock lover here. My husband is tall (but not thin or dark,) majored in physics (is an engineer) and is extremely intelligent. I'm the emotional person of the two of us. He has emotions, but I show them more. :D

I have to admit, I have a new crush. Captain Pike. Yum, yum. Although McCoy ain't half bad.

So many good men...

How could anyone imagine Spock lusting after Uhura? You'd never see the original series characters carrying on like that.

OMG, your icon!

Seconded. +1

Thirded. Can't believe I missed that!

They're all very pretty, aren't they?

Didn't make it, found it - would credit if I knew who did it.

But thanks.

Lol, that subtitle

*L* If you say so. What is it about Spock, anyway? I never thought about it before, but I think Spock had sort of a Catholic School girl vibe with the women. Refined, pure, unattainable. Which probably makes him more appealing. I think kissing Uhura doesn't make him more appealing to women. It just makes women want to be Uhura.

Don't worry, you are in good company. Isaac Asimov didn't understand it either 40 years ago:

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/2777/misc/mr_spock.html

"It was school all over again. I could manage being clumsy but I could never keep up that blockhead business long. I’d be doing fine for a while, glazing my eyes, and remembering to say “Duh” when spoken to. But, sooner or later, at some unguarded moment, I would say something rational, and bitter shame would overcome me. It was no use; I could never attain that glorious lughood that would have put me at ease with women." -Asimov

*ROTFL*

That is absolutely hilarious. You know, I once wrote a little essay on how Asimov must not have understood women, because we had to read "Foundation" and I think the first book only had TWO women in it. In the whole book! And one was just alluded to, as I remember...

But I never knew his suffering was so profound, so....funny.....

Relationship, yes. Serious, yes. Sex? Interesting question, but I don't really think it's sexual. It appears to me that Vulcans share a sort of telepathic intimacy that's probably a little more bonding than sex, and they might possibly just have sex to reproduce, or infrequently. And I think humans partnering with Vulcans probably conform to that. I'd imagine that the whole mental contact/finger rubby thing they do would probably be enough to maybe stimulate some endorphins and such.

But definately, a passionate kiss on a transporter pad does not indicate bedbuddies. Maybe among humans, but even we're just as likely to have deep, loving relationships without sex.

I agree. I think this relationship is a deep one, but that does not necessarily indicate sex.

You know, comments like this sort of undermine the idea that this is the exact same timeline, just changed a little. Nothing that changed should have had any effect whatsoever on Spock, until after the Narada showed up in Vulcan's orbit. If you want to claim that Spock was already having a relationship with Uhura before that, then you can't really claim that this is also the original timeline that's just branched off at a point; either Spock is Spock until something different actually happens, or Spock is not Spock from the start.

I was honestly surprised by this element. I found it believable - Uhura speaked flirtily to Spock in at least "The Man Trap" so it seems consistent with their original characters, and perhaps even moreso with Spock's new embrace of his emotions. I thought the favoritism reference was going to be a simply acknowledgement of their original friendship.

However...

The timing of the reveal was what I found jarring. They gave no inkling of a relationship until just after Vulcan was destroyed, and then Uhura just throws herself at Spock. Did that give anyone else a "going to a funeral to hit on the widow(er)" vibe?

Agreed.

I appear to be in the minority, but I hated it. I mentioned in the grading thread that I dislike this because it's a very tempered emotional response, a "normal human" romantic scene. Vulcan emotional responses are normally either completely repressed or aggressive, powerful, and raw. I find it hard to believe that Spock suddenly can reach that kind of normal "budding romance" middle-ground in the face of what we know was traumatic for him. It was too, too weird.

Now, I want to make it clear--I like the idea of Spock learning to deal with his emotional human side and don't mind the relationship thing with Uhura. It was too comfortable too fast, though.

Also agreed, generally. The "alienness" of Vulcans behavior was always something that I think made them stand out, and it seems to be downplayed in the new timeline.

Maybe T'Pring did make it.

And therein, young Padwan, lies to core plot point of the Sequel, XII.

OF COURSE T' PRING MADE IT. SHE WAS ALWAYS A CLEVER GIRL. POOR STONN WASN'T. THAT'S WHY HE GOT SUCKED INTO THE SINGULARITY, BUT SHE MADE IT INTO AN EVACUATION SHUTTLE. SHE ALWAYS KNEW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF HERSELF!!!!

Now the population of eligible Vulcan males is somewhat, how shall we say, limited? And T' Pring needs someone with whom to undergo Ponn Farr? And she finds out in a somewhat roundabout way that the man with whom she was betrothed is shagging an Earther woman?

You can see the setup for a complete ripoff of Amok Time, can't you? Only with a girlfight to the death at the end.

The only question for Paramount is which A-List actress gets casted as the Woman Scorned? Any takers as to who plays T'Pring?

I am calling bullshit on any other plot points. I know Paramount too well. They want female mudwrestling. The setup involving Spock and Uhura opens the door for T'Pring too conveniently.

Uhura vs. T'Pring: Vulcan Cage Death Match. I'm calling it now. This script writes itself.

Brilliant. :rommie:

*L* If you say so. What is it about Spock, anyway?
Matter of taste..

(Hmmmm. Come to think of it, my husband is tall, thin, dark, and a theoretical physicist. There does seem to be a correlation...

His ears are quite human though.)

physically? it's the eyes, eyebrows and, of course, the ears.

in every other way? it's the mystery. he's the ultimate tall, dark and handsome stranger. an alien in every way.

he's fascinating to most women I know, even the ones not into Trek. he's probably one of the best fictional characters ever introduced.

Thirded. Can't believe I missed that!
