Well, we've never had a redheaded Jimmy Olsen in live action, except in black and white. Nor have we ever had a blond Barry Allen. Odd how female characters' hair colors are considered more non-negotiable than male characters'. (Although we've had two redheaded Lois Lanes, Noel Neill and Amy Adams.)
Also, it seems that most redheaded women in comic-book movies are played by actresses who aren't natural redheads -- Kirsten Dunst and Scarlett Johansson are blonde, Famke Janssen is brunette, etc. And as a result, their hair is a different shade of red in every movie, which is kind of annoying. (And then we had the irony of Spider-Man 3 featuring a natural blonde playing Mary Jane and a natural redhead playing Gwen Stacy.)
It probably is to some degree. But Marvel Studios has been willing to change the ethnicities of supporting characters before. Thor changed Heimdall into Idris Elba despite Asgardians being white in the comics. This even became a controversy before the movie came out with some small groups who don't deserve to be mentioned.I actually think it's a good idea to cast a non-Caucasian, non-red head as MJ. For one, people should understand that there's a difference between a character having a distinguishing characteristic and a defining characteristic. MJ's looks never defined her character and if they did then that's a very shallow character and not worth being faithful too.
Also, if one were of a somewhat cynical mindset, it could be seen as a consolation prize for those that were hoping that the MCU Spider-Man would be Miles Morales and not Peter Parker. I'm not saying that was the thinking, but in a broader context, it has been noted that the MCU is already way too white so some diversity is certainly welcome.
She's a big star on the Disney Channel shows, before getting into music. The same way Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez had their starts on Disney.Zen who?
I'm fine with the casting, I'm sure they know what they're doing. But am I alone in having never heard of her? Is it an American thing?
30.8 million followers on Instagram. Jesus.
* and "only" 6.8 million on Twitter. A fairly random point, but I never get when certain celebs have such a massive discord like that between the two. I mean I get some are more popular than others but that's a big gap, when you'd think most of whoever's fans would probably use both. Most young people would have Instagram and Twitter on their phones.

I thought it was the pointy bangs.Non-caucasian is fine but not a redhead? Come on, of course it's the defining characteristic of Mary Jane's appearance.
Again: a distinguishing characteristic is not the same as a defining characteristic.Non-caucasian is fine but not a redhead? Come on, of course it's the defining characteristic of Mary Jane's appearance.
