Spider-Man: Homecoming' anticipation thread

Yup, that's been a thread in the comics for a while, at least since New Avengers and Civil War. And since RDJ is the anchor of the MCU, it's no surprise that they'd embrace that.

Huh, didn't know that. Not a big comic reader, so I asumed it was just something for the movie. I'm curious if this really will be RDJ's last appereance in a MCU movie. I know he signed on for a few more movies after his contract ended, but I have no clue about how many.

No, there was a storyline leading up to Civil War where Tony took Peter on as a protege and gave him a high-tech "Iron Spider" suit to replace his classic costume, as well as getting him to support the Superhero Registration Act, which led to all sorts of unfortunate creative decisions I don't want to get into. The Civil War movie kind of tweaked that by having Tony be the one who gave Peter his classic Spider-Man costume, replacing the crude homemade version he'd been using. Which is a handy way to explain how a financially challenged teenager ends up with the kind of slick costume movie superheroes wear.

Yeah, that was always a bit of a stretch.

Personaly, I'm pretty psyched for this version of Spider-Man. Like I said, never read many comics, but I do remember reading some as a kid, and ofcourse plenty of cartoons. Spiderman was always a fave back then, and the other movies sofar have never really done it for me.

Last I read, he is only signed for Spider-Man and Infinity Wars at this point, with Spider-Man having been a more recent addendum to his contract. Not sure if that changed when he signed on to Spider-Man or when they split Infinity Wars into two films though.

RDJ's deal for Spider-Man: Homecoming is an entirely new contract with an entirely different studio. This movie is Sony's rodeo.

Haven't they essentially farmed it out to Marvel Studios wholecloth though? They're going to take the majority of the profits, do the distribution, and handle all the merchandising and whatnot, but the film itself is a Marvel Studios production with Columbia handling some of the bean counting.

Yeah, they sign the checks, but creative control is in the hands of Kevin Feige. I suppose the difference is, if in another movie, Disney would speak up, here it's Sony. But they gave it to Feige because they want him to make these decisions.

Columbia technically holds the rights as far as I recall, and they're listed as co-producers, so it all goes through them even if the order to make the deal came from higher ups at Sony.

It isn't quite that simple, but I'm clearly being excessively pedantic here. The point is that Columbia Pictures is indeed involved.

No problem with that in theory, but I don't know if I can accept a non redhead Mary Jane.
I hear you. I know they cast Shailene Woodley (Divergent series) for MJ in The Amazing Spider-Man series, but my pick would've been Scarlett Pomers (Naomi Wildman all grown up).

But Disney and Sony purposefully cast younger, to keep Peter in HS longer. Scarlett would make a great Barbara Gordon though.

Well, we've never had a redheaded Jimmy Olsen in live action, except in black and white. Nor have we ever had a blond Barry Allen. Odd how female characters' hair colors are considered more non-negotiable than male characters'. (Although we've had two redheaded Lois Lanes, Noel Neill and Amy Adams.)

Also, it seems that most redheaded women in comic-book movies are played by actresses who aren't natural redheads -- Kirsten Dunst and Scarlett Johansson are blonde, Famke Janssen is brunette, etc. And as a result, their hair is a different shade of red in every movie, which is kind of annoying. (And then we had the irony of Spider-Man 3 featuring a natural blonde playing Mary Jane and a natural redhead playing Gwen Stacy.)
