Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

I thought that Sony permanently owned not just the film rights but an actual piece of the Spider-Man character himself. Like, Marvel was just that desperate for cash back in the 1990s that they permanently sold off a piece of their most valuable character. I'd even heard that the editors at Marvel have to run it by Sony first before they make any substantial change to the character in the comics, although I've never heard of Sony vetoing anything that the comics wanted to do.

I would normally make fun of Sony for their Spider-decisions, but somehow they got a lot of people to go see Venom. And worse yet, a lot of those people say they liked it! :vulcan:

I think that Venom benefited from very low audience expectations. People went in expecting a Catwoman or Elektra level trainwreck and were pleasantly surprised to find it was merely a mediocre throwback to 2000s comic book movies like Daredevil and Ghost Rider. It also helped that it came out in October, long after the big summer blockbusters left theaters but before the big fall movies really got started. It filled a void. I approve.

It's much better than a lot of 90s fare such as Catwoman, Daredevil or Elektra, although I know that's not saying much.

First of all, I like Daredevil (although I'm aware that I'm the only one :p ).

Secondly, not to be too pedantic, but Catwoman, Daredevil, and Elektra came out in the '00s, not the '90s. The '90s were responsible for such superhero gems as Batman & Robin, Spawn, Steel, and the Matt Salinger version of Captain America. Make sure that you're blaming the right decade for the right atrocities! :D

My guess is it'll be Spider-Gwen rather than Jessica Drew.

I thought Gwen was going by Ghost Spider these days (which is cool, though it sounds like she should be connected to Ghost Rider somehow).
Yeah she is, and before that she was consistently referred to as Spider-Gwen in real world material. I have feeling if it was her, they probably would have used one of those names, rather than Spider-Woman. I'd be shocked if it wasn't Jessica Drew, the Spider-Woman name is most often associated with her.

Unless I'm mistaken, it has been the conventional assumption that Jessica Drew isn't a character who falls under Sony's purview, but maybe things have changed.

She's not? I'm pretty sure I've seen references to her being part of the Spider-Man package, just because she has Spider in her name.
If one Spider-Woman is included with Spider-Man, than wouldn't all of them be?

I think that she may be one of those characters that falls under both Sony's Spider-Man license and Disney Marvel because she was often a member of the Avengers. Kinda like the dueling Quicksilvers we got a few years ago back when Disney didn't own 20th Century Fox.

Any word on Firestar? She first appeared in the 1980s Spider-Man cartoon, so she might be Sony. But her first appearance in the comics was in X-Men, so she might be Disney.

And why hasn't Kingpin appeared in any Spider-Man movies. Sure, he's mostly associated with Daredevil now but wasn't he a Spider-Man villain for a long time before that?

I'm pretty sure the live-action adaptation rights to Kingpin were always part of the adaptation rights for Daredevil, although I don't know why that was the case.

Sony could possibly ask to license the character from Marvel Studios, but without another franchise reboot it might be hard to fit him into a Spidey-related story given the way that the Daredevil TV series used him.

Olivia Wilde is to direct a film centring on an as-yet unidentified female character (but believed to be Spider-Woman):

Hell, yeah! Olivia Wilde is a great director so I'm thrilled to see read about this development.

A pity it's a Sony film and not an MCU film, but with her at the helm, I'm sure it'll still be great. Hopefully the film is about Jessica Drew, although Ghost Spider (a far better name than Spider-Gwen) would be great, too.

A version of Gwen does sound more likely than Jessica as she's by far the more popular and marketable character these days. I always got the impression that Drew was one of those characters that was just *there*. Rather like the 'Mar-Vell' version of Captain Marvel; not massively popular and mostly just existing to retain legal rights over the name. Plus, a certain amount of her character hallmarks have since been taken up by Miles, Gwen, Carol Danvers and Jessica Jones (yes, I know that's not by accident.) Since they're all now much more well known it'd probably make her seem even more derivative than just her name.

Had no idea Olivia Wilde had gone behind the camera. Smart move as she didn't seem to be getting many lead roles in front of it (not from any lack of acting talent so far as I've seen.) I'll have to check out 'Booksmart' at some point.

Reportedly, they're developing an animated Into the Spider-Verse spinoff centering on Ghost Spider, Silk, and Jessica Drew. I doubt that's Wilde's film, though, since directing animation is a very different skill from directing live-action.

That's not a name I expected to see on that side of the camera for a superhero movie. I haven't seen it, but I know Booksmart was supposed to be really good, so hopefully she can bring that same quality to her superhero movie.

Wow, I hadn’t actually realised that she directed Booksmart, even though I saw it. And yes, it was really good.

Given that this is still in the rumor stage, I don't know that we can read to much into the name "Spider-Woman" being mentioned. I've just seen it mentioned as being "a female-centric Marvel movie." That could be anything-- Jessica Drew, Spider-Gwen, Silk, Jackpot, even a revival of the Silver & Black movie that's been on the back burner for a while.

Turns out that the joke's on us and she's just doing a remake of Kiss of the Spider Woman. :p

According to EW J.C. Chandor is in talks to direct a Kraven the Hunter movies for Sony. I've never heard of him, so I'm not sure what to think of this news.
I'm curious how a Spider-Man free Kraven movie is going to work. Is he just going to be a out hunting animals, or is he going to be going after another Sony/Marvel character, or original character?

Which characters Sony has the rights to is actually completely known due to the Sony hacks. Sony has full rights to the character. Marvel has shared rights to Jessica Drew as long as she doesn't have spider powers or a costume.

Hmm, so I guess not using her in Jessica Jones must have been a purely creative choice,
