Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

Paralegal! I was trying remember what they were called when I was writing my other post, but I couldn't so I just said intern instead.

Sure, reading the comics would be fun, but having to record everything in the comics would have to get pretty tedious after a while.
Not much different than what we used to do at memory beta, and it never got tedious. Except they get paid to do it.

I tried to record everything for a Memory Omega article while I was reading one of the recent TNG Relaunch books, and I gave up after about 3 or 4 chapters. I was getting tired of having to stop and copy the name down every time a new planet, ship, character, alien race, ect. appeared.

The point is, "tedious" is the baseline in that profession. People wouldn't be doing that job if they couldn't handle tedious chores. So that part wouldn't matter much.

I assumed the 2011 document is a modification of their earlier agreement

I assumed that it was just their most recent clarification of the agreement that was already in place. I mean, it's not like Marvel would agree to allow Sony to have ANY characters now if they had a choice in the matter.

Yup. Can you imagine the scene in the office:

You - read the 50,000 pages of discovery in this defective product claim and look for evidence that the manufacturer knew of technical faults with their product but ignored it.

You - read 10,000 pages of disclosure in this criminal prosecution and look for evidence of the police breaching their duties and the defendant’s rights.

You - read a load of Spider-Man comics and make a note of the characters’ names.

While I'd be interested to see what kind of direction they might take with a stand-alone Silk TV series, it would be unfortunate if this ended up making it less, rather than more, likely that Cindy Moon could be added to a would-be (New) Agents of ATLAS project - which I hope the upcoming Shang-Chi movie might help build towards. (Both Silk and Shang-Chi are part of that team on Earth-616.)

God I hope not. The real Agents of Atlas (Jimmy Woo, Marvel Boy, Venus, Gorilla Man, Namora and M-11) are awesome, but totally got the shaft. The all asian in name only team was poorly written and not that interesting, so I hope it doesn't get used for something like that. Luckily Sony has no rights to Agents of Atlas anyway. but, as one of the (admittedly few) fans of the actual AoA, I don't want the shitty version to become mainstream, because that would probably ruin even the smallest chance of getting the good team back in the comics.

As for Silk herself, I really liked her solo comics (she's literally the only good Spider-Man connected thing that came out of the comics post-One More Day), so I'd be up to seeing a show with her as the star.

ATLAS is a large enough organization for both teams to co-exist within it. In fact, the recent Agents of Atlas and Atlantis Attacks comics not only show this, but also has Jimmy Woo introduce the two teams to one another.

Speaking of Jimmy Woo, it would also be interesting to see if Randall Park's version of the character from Ant-Man and the Wasp eventually becomes the Jimmy Woo of ATLAS. Or, perhaps, if his "FBI agent" persona in that movie is but a cover for the "real" Jimmy's work.

And of course, the assumption would be that, if Marvel Studios were the ones to take a lead on a (New) Agents of ATLAS project, that they would have to work together with Sony if they wished to add Cindy Moon to the (new) team. Although I am still wondering if there has been any word as to whether the current deal between Disney and Sony already allows this to happen, or if they would have to negotiate a separate deal for Silk instead.

If Marvel Studios wanted to do something with the original ATLAS team, well and good, but are the rights to Namora in the same category as... whatever seems to be going on with Namor's rights?

@Nerroth -- Randall Park's Jimmy Woo will be returning in WandaVision, apparently affiliated with SWORD.

ETA-- As for Namor, Marvel owns the rights to the character, but as with the Hulk, they do not have the distribution rights for a Namor the Sub-Mariner movie. So, they can introduce him in a movie and utilize him throughout the MCU, but not feature him in his own flick. In fact, it is been strongly hinted, rumoured and suggested that Namor was set to be the primary antagonist in... Black Panther 2. :(

Is he still a villain in the comics, or is he back to being a good guy now?

I suspect that they would need a separate deal, or at least would need to run it by Sony first. I suspect that any cross use of the different characters is really only allowed as a courtesy and they both have to tread lightly. Other than Spider-Man himself, the only Sony characters to appear in non-Sony movies were Aunt May in Civil War and Ned having very brief cameos in Infinity War & Endgame. And I nearly forgot about Aunt May's appearance at Tony Stark's funeral in Endgame. I suspect that there's a bit more latitude in putting Disney Marvel characters into the MCU Spider-Man movies but that's only because Marvel Studios is the one producing those movies in the first place, so they can choose to bring over as many or as few of their characters as they want.

So I would guess that expanding the Spider presence in the MCU beyond Peter Parker & his immediate circle would probably require a separate conversation.

BTW, has anyone heard anything lately about those rumors about Marvel wanting Norman Osborn to be the big bad in Phase 4 or 5?

Yet all of those were movies that Spidey himself was also in, so I presume that opened the door for including one or two other Spidey-adjacent characters. I doubt you'd ever see, say, J. Jonah Jameson or Felicia Hardy show up in an MCU movie that didn't also have Spider-Man in it.

He recently went back to being a bad guy actually, after a decently long stretch of being a good guy. He switches sides at the drop of a hat though, so next month he could go back to being a good guy if a writer decides thats what they want.

The rumors I heard to that effect came hand in hand with the claim Oscorp tower would appear in Far from Home. Not only didn't that happen, but FFH was followed by the near break-up of the whole deal, so I don't think the rumors were ever trustworthy.

The rumors I heard wasn't that Norman Osborn was going to be the big bad of MCU phase 4 or 5, but rather the first phase of Sony's movies.

I heard the Norman-as-Phase-4 villain around the time of Endgame, but nothing since. The rumour was that they wanted him to be almost set up as a sort of replacement for Tony Stark, a brilliant, charming, arrogant billionaire- but, unlike Tony (hot takes aside), a villain.

I’ve no idea if that was true and I’ve heard nothing about it since, but I’m absolutely convinced that if they went down that route, Tom Cruise would absolutely rule as the MCU Norman.

Yes, but my point was that all we've seen so far is the supporting characters surrounding the Peter Parker Spider-Man. It's up in the air whether Marvel & Sony have any similar agreement concerning alternate headlining characters like Silk, Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2099, Venom, Morbius, etc.

That would be pretty neat. Although, after already kinda going that route with Mysterio being something of a surrogate replacement for Tony Stark in Far from Home, I'm not sure how many times they could or should go back to that well. (But then, this is Spider-Man we're talking about. How many times have the comics gone back to the bridge where Gwen Stacy died?)

But I think Tom Cruise would definitely be an interesting piece of casting. I can't recall too many times when he's played a villain. He was a hitman in Collateral. Lestat was a pretty nasty dude in Interview with the Vampire. But that's about all that I can recall.
