I thought that Sony permanently owned not just the film rights but an actual piece of the Spider-Man character himself. Like, Marvel was just that desperate for cash back in the 1990s that they permanently sold off a piece of their most valuable character. I'd even heard that the editors at Marvel have to run it by Sony first before they make any substantial change to the character in the comics, although I've never heard of Sony vetoing anything that the comics wanted to do.
I think that Venom benefited from very low audience expectations. People went in expecting a Catwoman or Elektra level trainwreck and were pleasantly surprised to find it was merely a mediocre throwback to 2000s comic book movies like Daredevil and Ghost Rider. It also helped that it came out in October, long after the big summer blockbusters left theaters but before the big fall movies really got started. It filled a void. I approve.
First of all, I like Daredevil (although I'm aware that I'm the only one
).
Secondly, not to be too pedantic, but Catwoman, Daredevil, and Elektra came out in the '00s, not the '90s. The '90s were responsible for such superhero gems as Batman & Robin, Spawn, Steel, and the Matt Salinger version of Captain America. Make sure that you're blaming the right decade for the right atrocities!
I would normally make fun of Sony for their Spider-decisions, but somehow they got a lot of people to go see Venom. And worse yet, a lot of those people say they liked it!![]()

It's much better than a lot of 90s fare such as Catwoman, Daredevil or Elektra, although I know that's not saying much.
