Sony Spider-Verse discussion thread

Schnepp makes a lot of bold claims that aren't always true, but it's always possible.

At this point it would make a lot more sense than going back to the Peter-Parker-as-maladjusted-teen well one more time. It would be a bit of a departure from the usual Marvel sausage-making approach to their other superhero films.

Hey, let him guest in the third Deadpool movie. That would be interesting. ;)

Such an easy money prediction. And if for some crazy reason they don't get Holland into Venom in some capacity, then it's "Oh man, legal said no after all."

Indeed, Spider-Man is a lot like Batman in a certain way. They're both characters who nominally operate as loners, but who, due to their popularity with audiences, have been systematically teamed up and crossed over and spun off so many times that they've become the most gregarious heroes in their respective universes.

Amen! Spider-Gwen for life! :D

I don't know how Disney or anyone else could legally stop them. Sony still owns the movie rights to Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Homecoming was a Sony film. The Sony/Marvel partnership is a mutually beneficial one but I'm still pretty sure it's one that either party can walk away from at any time. I was always pretty sure that there wouldn't be much point in Sony developing other Spider-verse properties if they couldn't at least imply that they were all loosely connected to the MCU Spider-Man. There's big money to be made in attaching yourself, however loosely, to that shared-universe cash cow. Just ask all the Marvel TV shows.

And the trailer is now out:

Based on the brief glimpses, it looks like the symbiote arrives on a crashed ship, instead hitchhiking on Peter or arriving with John Jameson.

Edit: Looking at the Wikipedia article, I'm surprised to see that we know very little about the cast. Only Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Riz Ahmed and that's it, for a film that's out in October. Seems odd.

I'm assuming it's closer to Ultimate version with a science experiment. The teaser is creepy, but I feel I'm going to buy or sell this movie on the strength of how Venom looks.

Intriguing teaser. It's weird hearing Tom Hardy with an American accent.

That felt a bit underwhelming but it's a teaser, so... I'm afraid Tom Hardy is becoming too Tom Hardy in every role for me... Not his fault, but it can take me out of the movie a bit.

Annnnd angry stupid fans are planning a boycott...

Maybe the ship was a part of Thanos's attack fleet.;)

And Tom Holland.;)

Yeah, it does seem odd that we haven't heard more casting announcements.

Sooo...they're boycotting because it's Sony...and that's it? I guess that's enough.

Aha! That's it!

And Tom Holland.;)
Is that actually confirmed? I couldn't remember if that was still just a rumor.

Maybe we'll starting seeing some now that the trailer is out.

Well, I'll give it this much. I'm more interested in this then in any potential Homecoming sequel. That said, I've never thought this was a good idea, and the trailer didn't change my mind. I don't have high hopes for it. I'm not even a fan of Tom Hardy (I don't dislike him, I'm just neutral toward him) so the one aspect that seems to be a draw for some people doesn't matter to me.

If Venom fails, which isn't unlikely in my opinion, it won't be because of some stupid boycott. It will be because the movie sucks. If its good (against all odds), I'm sure it will do at least adequately at the box office. If not, I think it will bomb. Reviews/word of mouth will probably make or break it.
