Some Confirmed Details On The Casting For ST film

Lumen said:
Characters are not static. There's nothing to say that the McCoy we knew wasn't a little danger-loving in his youth.

He could've been. Starfleet is hardly a place for play-it-safers. The problem I have is it sounds like Bashir.

Let's be honest here for a moment. Other than Kirk, Spock and McCoy, the other characters had no personality other than "hailing frequencies open, sir" or "Aye, sir. Warp speed" or "I'm gonna hav' ta' give 'ew auxiliary power, Cap'N!"

I don't care if Bones is more devil-may-care in his youth as long as we get an ensemble of characters who have things to do in the movie other than give exposition and look shocked at a viewscreen.

These breakdowns are exciting and it seems like JJ's on the right track.

I gotta say that serving on a starship that routinely fights giant amoebae and planetkillers is a strange career for someone who's not a bit "danger-loving."

If this is accurate then J.J. already got something right that the worshiped demigod "Nick" failed to do...

As far as I know, Nick Meyer wasn't responsible for casting the actors who originally played these characters. :p

Guessing that's not what you meant, though.

Nope. I was simply referring to a person missing from the list.

Oh, stop it with the "Khan should not know Chekov" argument. Nothing that was EVER said on screen would exclude Chekov from being part of the Enterprise's crew of 430 people in season one of TOS. And since nothing was ever said to deny this fact -- and in fact canon was completely silent on the the issue of "when did Chekov join" prior to TKoK -- then Nick Meyers was perfectly in his rights to add this to the canon, which he did through a few lines of dialogue.

This was not a mistake by the writers, because it did not violate canon (only "fanon"). [EDIT] I'm not saying that "fanon" is irrelevant, only that it can be trumped by on-screen canon.

...and don't get me started on how I think McCoy could have been part of the Enterprise crew pre-WNMHGB... ;)

I agree that we don't need to see much if anything of the minor characters, but I would consider McCoy an important element, only to show how the three of them gelled.

Simply being part of StarFleet should tell us something about the good Doctor and bing a bit danger loving.

Okay yeah he doesn't like having his atoms scrambled (or his friends rock climbing without a rope) but it doesn't therefore follow he doesn't like danger or accept the idea of danger as par of his career and get something out of it.

There is also the possibility that the casting sheet is a complete fabrication and that all this handwringing about how much McCoy loves danger is academic.

Handwringing? Handwringing?

Handwringing is our business. It's what this starship is all about. It's why we're aboard her.

I strongly believe that this so-called "casting sheet" is a hoax. I wish I could explain why I feel that way, but for now, it's just really interesting to watch the reactions.

Wouldn't it be interesting, HYPOTHETICALLY of course, if this had been "leaked" by the production team, just to get a sense of how strongly people really want to see "original character cameos?" It's pretty safe to assume that they guys doing this film have been doing their research... in their spare time... as to what the audience really wants to see. If there's dancing in the streets over the potential appearance of an Uhura-offshoot character, for instance, even if she wasn't originally part of the main plot action, they might put in a shot involving, say, Lieutenant Kirk teaching a course and this young female cadet having a line or two. ;)

It might also be a "feeler" to see how strongly the audience... and the "fan base" in particular... react to the idea of some changes in their characters.

Everybody knows that McCoy was never a daredevil... not his personality. He went into dangerous situations because he felt compelled, in order to save lives. That was fundamentally core to his character and anyone who doesn't get that is missing the character at the most basic level. And Abrams and his team DO get the characters.

So, either this is a prank, or another Harry Knowles fraud, or it's an extremely cost-effective form of MARKET RESEARCH!

... or the movie is gonna change everything and, I'd say, would therefore end up a total disaster (which I do NOT believe is likely).

But if it's routine for everyone serving on the ship to be danger-loving, then why add it to the character sheet for only one character?

This line alone makes me think it's a fake:

[UHURA] 25ish -African American. Brilliant, beautiful, heroic and FUN!, Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in a houseful of brothers.

"houseful of brothers"? C'mon now -- even casting directors would not make such an obvious racial joke, or if it wasn't a joke they would be more careful with their wording.

^^
How is a "houseful of brothers" racist? That's the idiotic comment of the day, congratulations.

A girl that grows up with brothers tends to be rough and tomboyish, regardless of race.

So having brothers is racist now? Wow. I wonder what kind of uproar it'd Uhura had grown up in a house full of sisters?

Note to all casting directors: a black character must be an only child if you wish to avoid being called a racist. :guffaw:

Because the point of that one sentence is to differentiate the characters rather than emphasize their similarities?

That so much is being made by so many about a line on a casting sheet is simply amazing.

I didn't say I was surprised; I said it was amazing.

It's like an auto wreck - after you've seen a couple the damage cars can do by hitting one another at high speed isn't surprising, but it never fails to impress.

The internet was creacted by Trekkies, for Trekkies to bitch about Trek. I'm not the least bit shocked that an unauthenticated casting sheet is putting everyone's panties in a twist.

And if it's real? So what? The movie is months out of even production yet, relax guys.

Well, I apologize. I thought the idea of a discussion board was to, you know, discuss. I could've just said "I think it's fake" and leave it at that, but I thought the whole point of posting on a message board was to discuss things, and this is a point of discussion. My own personal panties aren't the least bit twisted (especially since I don't wear 'em), but if I've caused you or the great all-knowing Mr. Bailey some discomfort in the nether regions by what I had thought to be fulfilling the function of this board, I do profusely apologize.

Exactly my point. You were saying that McCoy must be danger-loving, because anyone on a starship would be, but by using that line to differentiate him, it would seem to me that it's saying he's a bit more danger-loving than some others on the ship, something I find to be patently out of character.

[JAMES KIRK] 23-29 Handsome, cocky self assured and earnest. Great physical condition. 6 ft or less

[LEONARD(BONES)MCOY] -28-32 Medic on the Enterprise. Smart, clever and a bit danger-loving. Dark hair, blue eyes.

[UHURA] 25ish -African American. Brilliant, beautiful, heroic and FUN!, Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in a houseful of brothers.

[SULU] 25-32 -Asian American male (preferably Japanese). Helmsman on the Enterprise. Extremely fit, capable and dedicated. A bit of a wildcat

[MONTGOMERY(SCOTTY) SCOTT] -28-32 a brilliant ship's engineer. Must be able to do a flawless Scottish accent!
