Awesome work. How big is it?

Thanks. It's 8 inches tall. I'll probably modifer the collar a bit. Looks a little too much like the TMP collar.

Taken entirely out of context this exchange made me

Let's asume for a moment that the rumors about Chekov are correct, and that this is a TOS-era film. This secondary character could be Chekov's love interest who is killed half-way through this film in a way that is meaningful to the plot -- this could be how a 20-year old Chekov gets involved with this film.

Wow. Chekov just can't seem to get a break huh? That Monkee boy had luck just this side of a redshirt it seems.

I'm not a fan of most "kid" characters but why is it everyone seems to think that in science fiction movies and TV shows, every character was born at the age of 18? That's the general mindset of many. With almost any show, you're going to have younger characters. Some of them have been really bad, no question about it. But a lot of people will just blindly dismiss them for the reason that they are kids.

Well, I agree. Kids are seldom like obnoxious adults who are trying to pander to kids portray them.

I've said it before, and I'm still saying it... I think we'll see a short scene... a few minutes... showing a 12-year-old Jimmie Kirk at the family farm, when the Starfleet officer comes to deliver the news that George Kirk was killed in the line of duty. It won't be a "cool, cute kid" scene... it'll be the beginning of his change from a midwestern farm boy into the grim, humorless Jim Kirk that this movie will really start off with, but will very likely not end up with.

I think that's really a consequence, as you seem to indicate, of the vast numbers of poorly written child roles in sci-fi: Smart alecks wise beyond their years, earnest wunderkinds who the adults don't listen to, christ-like "star children" with awesome cosmic powers, and so on.

To give a counter-example, one of my favorite "kids" in sci-fi was Jake Sisko. He wasn't a super-genius or a pesky sidekick - he was just a teenager, who happened to be a good writer. wish they would write more like that.

You could try the pilot-style ribbed collar perhaps. I'm an especial fan of my own pre-tos design.

Hmm, I've never been a fan of the ribbed collar, but I like the rest of your design.

I think I'll try out the flap idea and see what it looks like.

I like the ribbed collar. Nice nod to the "olden days" - most people won't know what it's a reference to, but it's fun for us. Nice design overall.

Someone here said that the ages of the characters leads them to believe it is before they serve on the Enterprise.... but Abrams said that they will be using the Enterprise in the film. I'm hoping it'll be the begining of their 5 year mission.

That's a very good point. The worst is when they try to make the kids like they are in Dawson's Creek. All that self-awareness is annoying.

On Friday Night Lights, the teenagers actually feel like real teenagers. The quarterback, Matt Saracen is probably the most realistic teenager on television.

The Sunday Mirror is reporting that James McAvoy has been cast as Scotty:

Shameless star James McAvoy will boldly go where no Scot has gone before - playing Scotty in Star Trek.

The 28-year-old actor has won the role of chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise, immortalised in Captain Kirk's phrase "Beam me up, Scotty".

C'mon now...

It's been 42 minutes since TorontoTrekker posted that story from the Sunday Mirror, and no trekkers (or trekkies) have yet posted that "captain Kirk never said 'Beam me up, Scotty' ".

I'm truly disappointed in the quality of fans on this board ;)

I haven't seen McAvoy in anything — is he good?

He played Leto II (Well really Leto III but that's another topic) in the Scifi Miniseries "Children of Dune".

He was good.

Well, you know, it'd be cool if they found an African actor to play Uhura (I know, they're looking African-American). With all the talk all these years of how wonderful the concept of the "international crew of the Enterprise" was, as long as they're recasting it would be a great opportunity to pay more than lip service to the principle.

With Yelchin and McAvoy on board (assuming this story is true), it does seem awfully appropriate to keep it up, for both Zulu and Uhura.

Sadly, I'm afraid Quinto isn't actually an extraterrestrial.

Mmm...too small for Scotty. Only 5'7" and slight - I like the idea of Scotty being big enough to hold his own in a barroom brawl. But Scotty casting isn't a big issue for me.

Yelchin has been American since he was a baby (immigrated to the US at 6 months of age, cmon). Why not Americans of Japanese and African originals for Sulu (Zulu? :D) and Uhura?

And with the lack of minority representation in both TV and movies, if they import their Sulu and Uhura, there will be hell to pay, rest assured. The white guys don't count. ;)

Well, I didn't mention Sulu because they eventually established in one of the movies that he was probably Japanese-American rather than Japanese.
