Some Confirmed Details On The Casting For ST film

It's weird on this list left Chekov off and yet Hollywood Reporter reports:

J.J. Abrams is putting together his bridge crew for Paramount Pictures' 11th film in the "Star Trek" franchise. Russian-born Anton Yelchin is in negotiations to play Pavel Checkov, the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk.

Yelchin will join Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock. Casting is under way in New York and London for Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's villain and the Federation captain. Abrams, who will helm the untitled film, is expected to sign bigger-name actors for the latter two parts.
how'd AICN miss that?

How is a "houseful of brothers" racist? That's the idiotic comment of the day, congratulations.

A girl that grows up with brothers tends to be rough and tomboyish, regardless of race.

Well, I read this as a potential play on words..."Brothers" being a pseudonym for black men. Maybe I'm just being paranoid and they actually meant "male sibling".

I just feel that a real casting director would have chosen better words to describe these characters, especially Uhura. If this were a real casting sheet written by a real casting director, they would have been sensitive to that fact that someone might read "African-American"/"houseful of brothers" and jump to the wrong conclusion that someone is making a bad joke.

Dennis? Mr. Bailey? Is someone here Dennis Bailey with a name change?
He changed his name to UWC Defiance a long time ago, if you're actually asking. The thread in QSF indicates this.

Dear God, they're actually getting a Russian to play Chekov? :D

According to his IMDb profile, the dude's only 18. Perhaps we'll be seeing a Cadet Chekov?

Probably Chekov wasn't on the casting sheet because they were already talking to this actor and didn't plan to hold auditions for the part.

This may be true of some of the other characters in the film as well. If you're pursuing an "A-lister" you don't put out a casting call.

That's entirely possible...but looking at Yelchin's picture, I think he could pass for 22 or so (remember, Koenig had that "baby-face, teen-magazine idol" look.)

I was hoping for Matt Damon as Kirk but we'll have to look else where.

How about Ben Whishaw for Kirk?

and a better photo http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0396171/Ss/0396171/2c.jpg.html?hint=tt0396171

Although I have no idea if he can do an American Accent.

I'll believe the Hollywood reporter over the first release, though they don't necessarily contradict.

The chekhov (and can people spell it right?) news is good. He WAS pretty damn young-looking.

We ARE spelling it "right." The name of the Trek character was not the "correct" Russian spelling. This is PAVEL CHEKOV, not Anton Chekhov. Blame Roddenberry for not getting this right. ;)

Wow, how did the Resident Evil 5: Racist thread make its way into here? :)

This is why John Singleton only made two of the four leads in Four Brothers black.

Good point. That explains why Spock wasn't on it either.

Well, let me clarify again...

If this is a real casting sheet, and the term "brothers" was only meant to mean "male siblings" and nothing else, then I was wrong. I'm not above admitting I was wrong when the facts are clear.

However, if this is a FAKE casting sheet, and the term "brothers" was used as a play-on-words...a sort subtle "wink and a nod" joke by the author to refer to a house full of black men, then I stand by my claim that this is racist.

By the way, I'm not the only person to originally thought this MAY have been a deliberate play-on-words in an attempt to be funny. I have since seen this same topic come up on other boards.

But we're getting off-topic...I was WRONG WRONG WRONG, now let's move on.

I'm not buying into the fact that you can't read the words "African American" and "brother" in the same sentence without thinking it's a play on words. Guess what, us black people have siblings too. Did you know that?
I have two brothers. They're both older. We'd ride our bikes outside and climb trees and they'd punch me in the chest whenever I tried to tag along with them and their friends.

Who'd of thunk? ;)

I hope that he isn't the choice. I really think we're going to get some young WB/CW type actor as Kirk.

I admit that Ben Whishaw may be a bit too young-looking (he's 27, but looks younger), and he would definitely need to "bulk-up" before portraying even a young Kirk. Whishaw isn't my only choice, I just want to throw him out there for consideration. He is an excellent actor and has been nominated and won many International TV and film awards. Another question about him is can he do an American Accent?

You may have seen Whishaw in "Stoned" where he played a young Keith Richards. He was good in a small role in the cool British mobster film "Layer Cake". He has just finished filming "I'm Not There", where he plays one of the seven(!?) Bob Dylan Roles (so maybe he can do and American Accent). He is now filming a new theatrical version of the Evelyn Waugh Novel "Brideshead Revisited". He is definitely one of the best and most sought-after actors in England right now.

I hope you're wrong about them looking for the "WB/CW network-type"...I would hate to see some hot young actor get the part just because he's good looking. But from what I heard so far (such as that characters are very important in this film), I think they are definitely looking for actors who can act, not just look good.

Here is a real (albeit out of date) casting sheet, just in case you were wondering what one looked like.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING SERIES REGULARS:

CAPT. JULIAN PICARD -- A caucasian man in his 50's who is very youthful and
in prime physical condition. Born in Paris, his gallic accent appears
only when deep emotions are triggered. He is definitely a 'romantic'
and believes strongly in concepts like honor and duty. Capt. Picard
commands the Enterprise. He should have a mid-Atlantic accent, and a
wonderfully rich speaking voice.

NUMBER ONE (AKA WILLIAM RYKER) -- A 30-35 year old caucasian born in Alaska.
He is a pleasant looking man with sex appeal, of medium height, very
agile and strong, a natural psychologist. Number one, as he is usually
called, is second-in-command of the Enterprise and has a very strong,
solid relationship with the Captain.

LT. COMMANDER DATA -- He is an android who has the appearance of a man in
his
mid 30's. Data should have exotic features and can be anyone of the
following racial groups: Asian, American Indian, East Indian, South
American Indian or similar racial groups. He is in perfect physical
condition and should appear very intelligent.

LT. TANYA YAR -- 26 year old woman of Ukranian decent who serves
as the starship's security chief. She is described as having a new
quality of conditioned-body-beauty, a fire in her eyes and muscularly
well developed and very female body, but keeping in mind that much of
her strength comes from attitude. Macha has an almost obsessive
devotion
to protecting the ship and its crew and treats Capt. Picard and Number
One as if they were saints.

LT. DEANNA TROI -- An alien woman who is tall (5'8" - 6') and slender, about
30 years old and quite beautiful. She serves as the starship's Chief
Psychologist. Deanna is probably foreign (anywhere from Italian,
Greek,
Hungarian, Russian, Icelandic, etc.) with looks and accent to match.
She and Number One are romantically involved. Her alien "look" is
still to be determined.

WESLEY CRUSHER -- An appealing 15 year old caucasian boy (need small 18 or
almost 18 year old to play 15). His remarkable mind and photographic
memory make it seem not unlikely for him to become, at 15, a Starfleet
acting-ensign. Otherwise, he is a normal teenager.

BEVERLY CRUSHER -- Wesley's 35 year old mother. She serves as the chief
medical officer on the Enterprise. If it were not for her
intelligence,
personality, beauty and the fact that she has a natural walk of a
striptease queen, Capt. Picard might not have agreed to her request
that Wesley observe bridge activities; therefore letting her son's
intelligence carry events further.

LT. GEORDI LaFORGE -- a 20-25 year old black man, blind from birth. With
the
help of a special prosthetic device he wears, his vision far surpasses
anything the human eyes can see. Although he is young, he is quite
mature and is best friends with Data. Please do not submit any
'street'
types, as Geordi has perfect diction and might even have a Jamaican
accent. Should also be able to do comedy well.

While we're at it, here's the casting sheet for the last "Star Trek" series:

Captain Jackson Archer: Early 40s. Physical. Bold personality. Intensely curious. Born and raised an explorer. Unlike the Starfleet captains in centuries to come, he exhibits a sense of wonder and excitement, as well as a little trepidation about the strange things he will encounter. He holds a grudge against the Vulcans, who he blames for impeding humanity's progress. But his science officer is Vulcan, and he's struggling to reconsider those preconceptions. Although he has a strong sense of duty, he's a bit of a renegade - he's not afraid to question orders or even disobey them if he feels in his gut that he's right... .

Sub-Commander T'Pau: Late 20s, early 30s. Vulcan female. Austere yet sensual. She's the Science Officer assigned to oversee humanity's progress on board Enterprise. Although she's cautious and guarded around humans, whom she considers primitive and irrational, she's developed a grudging respect for Captain Archer. She'll become one of his most loyal and trusted crew members. .

Commander Charlie 'Spike' Tucker: Chief Engineer. Early 30s. A Southerner who enjoys using his "country" persona to disarm people. He has an offbeat, often sarcastic sense of humor. Spike was hand-picked by Captain Archer, who is something of a mentor to him. Although Spike is a brilliant Engineer and an outstanding officer, he has very little first-hand experience with alien cultures, and he's often a "fish out of water" when dealing with new civilizations. .

Doctor Phlox: Exotic alien. Medical officer. Appears to be in his 40s, but we're not certain of his real age. Phlox speaks with a slight alien accent and has an eccentric sense of humor that no one quite understands. He thinks that humanity is fascinating. The Doctor has filled Sickbay with all sorts of bizarre medical instruments, alien plants and spores, and stasis chambers with small, living creatures. He practices a brand of "Intergalactic medicine" the likes of which we've never seen. This makes the most routine visit to Sickbay an unexpected adventure. .

Lieutenant Joe Mayweather: Helmsman. African American. Mid to late 20s. A unique product of 22nd Century life, Mayweather was raised on cargo ships. As a result Joe is more "interstellar" than even the Captain. He's travelled to dozens of planets and met many different alien species. Mayweather has an 'instinct' for space-travel that few humans possess. Joe's closest friend is Spike. Similar in age and spirit these two will spend their off-duty hours finding new ways to enjoy life in space.

Lt. Commander Malcolm Reed: Armory Officer. British. Late 20s - early 30s. In the new age of humanity's enlightenment, Reed is a bit of a throwback. He's a 22rd Century "soldier", all spit and polish and by-the-book. Reed is filled with contradictions. Despite his near-obsession with munitions, he's soft-spoken, shy and awkward around women. When testing a new weapon, he's liable to put on a pair of space-age earplugs because he doesn't like loud noises.

Ensign Hoshi Sato: Comm Officer. Japanese. Mid to late 20s. Striking and intelligent, Hoshi has a feisty spirit that often tests the patience of the crew. She's in charge of communications on Enterprise, but she also serves as ship's Translator. An expert in exo-linguistics, she learned to manipulate her vocal chords to emit a range of alien sounds no human has ever produced. She has a natural affinity for picking up languages. Hoshi doesn't like the idea of being trapped in a "tin can" hurtling at impossible speeds. Every time the ship jumps to warp she grips her console and closes her eyes. She's a "white knuckle" space farer.

Silik: Late 30s to early 40s. Alien. Physically agile. One of the leaders of the Suliban, a deadly species obsessed with genetic enhancement. Our villain. [Note: Silik is described as a recurring character.]

Admiral Forrest: Human male. 50s to 60s. A career military man who's the highest ranking officer in Starfleet. He's fond of Captain Archer and has personally selected him to command Enterprise. [Note: Forrest and all further characters are non-recurring, and cast for the pilot episode only.]

Admiral Leonard: Human male. 40s - 50s. A high-ranking officer in Starfleet who serves directly under Admiral Forrest.

Commander Williams: Human male. 50s. A somewhat temperamental Starfleet officer who serves as attaché to Admiral Forrest.

Ambassador Soval: Vulcan male. Late 60s. A wise and arrogant diplomat who has very little patience with Captain Archer.

Tos: Vulcan male. 50s. Ambassador Soval's assistant. Shares Soval's disdain for human culture.

I've always loved the Dr Crusher description

BEVERLY CRUSHER -- Wesley's 35 year old mother. She serves as the chief medical officer on the Enterprise. If it were not for her intelligence, personality, beauty and the fact that she has a natural walk of a striptease queen, Capt. Picard might not have agreed to her request that Wesley observe bridge activities; therefore letting her son's intelligence carry events further.

Translation:

"...If Capt Picard didnt want to fuck Crusher, he wouldnt have let her kid run around on the bridge..."
