So what are you reading now?

I'm reading Brimstone Kiss by Carole Nelson Douglas. Soon as I finish it I'm going to dive into Over a Torrent Sea.

Finished The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the interim.

Now I'm reading Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Deathless by KRAD.

I'm reading Homer's Illiad.
It's my third try, so hopefully this time I'll finish it. I'm giving the new version by Raoul Schrott a try. He rightfully criticizes the older translations for their mannered and unnecessarily complicated style. However, I wasn't impressed with his odd mix of old-fashioned expressions and words with modern vernacular when they broadcast two chapters of the audiobook on radio last year. Also, he's not a friend of capitalisation and commas, which doesn't exactly make the text easier to understand, given the complexity of the syntax. I'm also feeling like reading a radical treatise from the 60s due to the lack of capitalisation (it was en vogue among intellectuals, then).
Strangely enough, I've found it easier to read than the other version I have, and the greatness of the Homeric original shines through, so finally I can understand what intrigued people like Goethe and Schliemann so much.

I just finished Imani All Mine, which, while yes it is a young adult book, was still a good read. A bit lighter and a nice break from Trek, though there were definitely upsetting and sad parts in it.

Started Shards and Shadows today and liking it so far. Forgot to say, I'm finding the MU Sarah April more interesting/memorable than Diane Carey's version.

I've read the Doctor Who novelisation The Myth Makers today. It's a missing serial from the 3rd season where I'm currently stuck in my watching the classic series. Also, it deals with the Trojan War, so it was a nice distraction from my other reading, even offering another point of view on the contents of the Iliad. It was a light but entertaining read.

Finished the second String Theory book and decided not to get the third. After such a good first book, I lost interest in the series.

Instead, I've started Crossroad, a TOS numbered novel. I've had it on my shelf for years, but don't remember actually reading it.

I've decided to take a time out from any Science Fiction and am now reading Christopher Brookmyres Be My Enemy (Or Fuck this for a game of Soldiers)

Well, it's not Trek, but The Light Of Heaven by yours truly

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Twilight-Ke...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236003596&sr=1-1

is out in stores today (actually AFAIK it's been out since Thursday, but I got my comp copies today) - so go and buy loads of copies, read it, and tell Abaddon how great it is and how much you want to know what happens to Gabriella after the blatant not-quite-cliffhanger hook at the end...

Oh, as for what I'm reading - the sig says Mr Clarinet but actually I didn't get that started yet, cos I've been reading for research/work. The last SF book I read was "Spirit" by Gwyneth Jones, reviewing it for Death Ray, and currently I'm on "Trial By Fire: The Hundred Years War Part II" by Jonathan Sumption, on account of writing a thing set then...

Currently working my way through Captain's Table; I'm on the DS9 story.

I also just finished Q-In-Law; I thought it was really underwhelming, I didn't think Q was characterized right at all. Bitter and pissy rather than manipulative and tricky. And the whole story about the two kids in love was... predictable. Maybe I was just expecting too much.

I did like the TOS and TNG Captain's Table entries a lot, though; TOS more than TNG. Nice seeing Sulu & the Excelsior, whenever it shows up.

I'm currently reading Over A Torrent Sea. Afterwords, setting everything else aside for the remainder of the semester and focusing on a bunch of books about the Argentine Dirty War, Operation Condor, and the human rights abuses of former Chilean President Augusto Pinochet for a research paper I have to complete to earn my bachelor's.

I finished Greater than the Sum and now looking forward to the Destiny trilogy. But I'm reading Tales from the Captain's table first. Can't believe I missed it when it came out in 2005 (?). I thought at the time it was so sort of mega version of the original novels.

I've finished Hitler Moves East, so I have to take a momentary break from pleasure reading to do some research work; I'm about to start Edison's Conquest of Mars by Garrett P. Serviss, or to give the full title as rendered on the title page, Edison's Conquest of Mars (A Sequel to The War of the Worlds): How the People of All the Earth, Fearful of a Second Invasion From Mars, Under the Inspiration and Leadership of Thomas A. Edison, The Great Inventor, Combined to Conquer the Warlike Planet.

The War of the Worlds was serialized without authorization as Fighters from Mars in a couple American newspapers in 1897-8, and they changed the setting to match their locations of publication (New York and Boston). They then immediately followed this with a new novel telling of the human counterstrike, which was led by Thomas Edison and his fleet of electrical spaceships!

It's been awhile since I've read anything good. I'm going to start Sword of Damocles tonight. I never finished reading Orion's Hounds, I completely lost interest in it the more I read.

Just started Over a Torrent Sea. Once that's done with, I've picked up the first book of Conn Iggulden's Conquerer series about Genghis Khan. Heard good things about it.

I started Over a Torrent Sea today, too.
I just finished reading Watchmen by Alan Moore and liked it very much, it was so exciting I kept reading until 5 am.

Different strokes and all that. I thought it was by far the best Trek book of the year when it was published. Certainly the best Titan book by a light-year.

Reading The Children of Hurin right now.

Might try to get to Angels & Demons right after that to give me some time between it and the film's release, although it's pretty close as it is.

By then, I'll have a big enough pile up of Trek books to dive into.

Finally just started Over a Torrent Sea. The bookstore had it, but it had been sitting unshelved in the back for three or four days.

Finished Rogue Squadron, which didn't do a lot for me. Lots of space battles, no characterization. Then I read Jeffrey Thomas's recent Punktown novel Blue War, a strange, genre-bending novel. I thought it had some flaws, but that may be from my lack of familiarity with the Punktown series. In general, I liked it and am tempted to read more.
