So what are you reading, now? Part V

^ I was thinking about starting that this week. I'm usually a fan of Sawyer's, but really didn't like the last book in the Hominids trilogy. Is this one worth it?

I'm not sure whether you're referring to the whole trilogy or just WWW: Wonder, but the answer is yes either way. It's a fun trilogy with an optimistic bent that I don't see enough in sci-fi outside of star trek.

It's also an improvement over the Hominids trilogy if that's your main concern, and the ending is definitely more satisfying.

Still reading and loving Burning Dreams, but I also started ...wait for it... The Delta Anomaly. Not the car crash I feared. Much more akin to Best and Brightest than Worf's First Adventure. It's very contemporary - phones, magazines, crime, calling 911, the FBI etc. An enjoyable, light read so far, but I can imagine some Trekkies being much less forgiving than I.

Also of note - a refit Constitution-class (i.e. early TOS movies) training ship, the USS Cairo, in 2255. I'm sure tech-heads are fuming:lol:.

Just finished Indistinguishable from Magic and am on to Mockingjay, the third book of The Hunger Games trilogy.

Just finished the most recent Burn Notice book (Reformed), started the TNG Crossover book. Next on the to read list: "Life" by Keith Richards (if only because it's borrowed from a friend).

Finished Mission Gamma: Lesser Evil a little while ago. Planning to read The Brave and the Bold duology next. I have 41 books in my "catch-up" list, and I'm tackling them one by one in print date order. My goal is to finish by the end of 2011, though at my current rate it's a daunting undertaking! :D

(Been on vacation)

Finished: Full Dark, No Stars. (review below)
Reading : about 60% of the way through Indistinguishable from Magic and enjoying it quite a bit.

Review

Full Dark, No Stars - 3/5 stars

If this were any other author, I'd say this is a 4 star effort, but since I hold King to a higher standard, I'll have to rate this as merely "3 stars". Full Dark, No Stars is another collection of short stories much like Four Past Midnight. As with Four Past Midnight, there are 4 stories here, one which was very good, one which was good and 2 which were just fair. 1922 was clearly his best and most different effort and was a pretty compelling read. While it wasn't perfect, it was quite enjoyable and memorable.

Big Driver was fair at best. Nothing that hasn't been done before and better. A Good Marriage was a nice step back in the right direction though wasn't incredibly original either. Still, a good marriage was a very thought-provoking read, especially if you've been married a long time. Finally, A Fair Extension felt like leftovers from his Derry, Maine/Needful Things/IT era which was "fair" indeed.

All in all I'd recommend it for any Constant reader, but it doesn't represent his best works.

After watching all of the prerelease stuff for Game of Thrones, I've decided to go back and restart the book.

Just finished up Vanguard:Summon the Thunder. Another incredibly enjoyable read. Plus, it's always good when a planet blows up. :)

Moving on now to Indistinguishable from Magic. Will probably go back to continuing to re-read Vanguard after that.

Recently finished Echo Lake by Michael Connelly...and am just about to finish Vanguard #4. This book reminds the reader of its concurrent mission with TOS more than any of the books prior, I think.

I just did that as well. I forgot most of the book cause it's been so many years since I've read it. But it's still a great book!

Now reading Indistinguishable From Magic and enjoying the heck out of it! :techman:

Finished CSI: Shock Treatment a few minutes ago. Good read, I will most likely write a review for USF somewhere down the line (I'm still way behind. :()

Glad you liked it! Let me know when your review runs. I'll be curious to hear what you think.

Took some time, but it's online now. :)

Thanks! Glad you liked the book. That was a nice review.

True confession: I was halfway through writing the book when I realized that Hodges wasn't involved at all! That just wouldn't do, so I hastily found a way to squeeze at least one Hodges scene into the snake storyline! I'll have to try to do more with him next time.

This was actually my first chance to write Langston and Sara as well. Sara had been in the outline of my previous CSI book, but then Jorja Fox left the show and I had to divvy up her part among the other characters. Now, of course, Sara's back again so I finally got to use her.

And I also got to play a bit with Vartann and Catherine's new relationship, which was just heating up when I was writing the book.
