So I'm reading the "Twilight" Series (Spoilers)

Yeah, ok, I know this stuff is for shallow emo teenagers, but heck, its so talked about, and I have my own sister who has read the entire series, and is really really into it, and she's dragged me to both movies already, so I figured what the heck, I might as well find out what she's been reading.

So I bought "Twilight" book and started reading it on a long flight I just took. I'm only on chapter 6 right now, out of 20 something chapters in the book. So far, I have to say the first few chapters were kinda hard for me to read, being a 30 year old male maybe, but this girl Bella is really really emo or something. She is incredibly depressed, incredibly sad, hates everything, hates where she is living, just seems so depressing to read, like slit your wrists depressed.

I think some of this is going away now that she has met Edward now though, she seems to be opening up and becoming a bit less depressed.

Maybe it is these emotions of Bella that are appealing to teenagers these days, maybe the teens of today feel this same way, and thus this appeals to them and draws them in.

At any rate, it is starting to get better now, and I'm actually quite liking the book, it isn't as bad as I thought, even though I'm only on chapter 6. I think by the end of it I may find that I actually really do enjoy it. I'm also going to continue and buy the other books as well and read through the entire series, I mean why not, at least I'll be knowledgeable about it when I relate my own opinions about the series.

Anyway, I'll update this thread as I work my way through the book more and come up with more opinions.

If someone would do a "fan edit" of the Twilight books (ala The Phantom Edit) and remove all the agnsty teenage emo-ness... I might give it a read. I'm kind of interested in the Volturi plot-line for example...

However, I don't really see it happening anytime soon.

I started the book back before the first movie came out and got about 170 pages into it... but just couldn't get into it, you know? I've heard a lot about how the books are total page turners, but it hadn't grabbed me by that point... and there are a lot of books on my "to read" list.

Though I did read Stephenie Meyer's book The Host (her only non-Twilight series book so far) and that totally grabbed me! I couldn't put it down. So maybe at some point I'll give it another look. I'll be curious to hear what you think as you go along, Brent.

I've heard that books contain some of the worst writing ever, so I'm going to avoid them.

Yeah, can someone just re-write the book? You know, in gooder English or something? Cuz her writing is atrocious.

Seriously, though! I haven't read them, but from everything I've heard, the story and characters really aren't that bad. It's the actual writing that sucks.

But then the entire series would be 8 pages long...

It is horribly written, I haven't read it but I've been watching along with the link I posted and he reads the thing word for word and it's just a mess of the English language.

Yeah, they're a literary train wreck, and yet like any train wreck, I just can't look away! :o

Bella Swan is quite possibly the worst written female protagonist (I won't call her a heroine because there's nothing heroic about her) in recent literary history. She's a limp dishrag of a human being, and if you think she's awful in Twilight, just wait until you dive into the sequels... it only gets worse.

I have to admit that I've read all the "Twilight"-books. And I didn't like them all equally, because the quality really varies from book to book.

She doesn't like the place where she has to stay with her father, because it rains all the time. Also, there is a limited amount of sunshine there. Who wouldn't be depressed ;)?
But honestly, IMHO Bella isn't "emo" or depressed, she is just a bit reserved.

I thought the books weren't so bad. What really did bother me though was, that the writer mentions every fifth page how good-looking Edward is. Gee, I got that the first three times, no need to repeat it constantly over 500+ pages. Another thing is that it really takes ages for Bella to figure out what wrong is with the guy - why he is so pale and never eats.

I'd like to hear your opinion.

I'm glad everyone liked the video, he's nuts, I like his voice.

He hasn't updated in awhile, very sad. Maybe he burned the "book".

I have not read any of the books yet, but my girlfriend and I have seen all the movies there were great.

The movies are a cinematic train wreck the same way the books are a literary train wreck. They're utter shite, but I can't look away! :o

Thanks, Brent, keep us posted. I'm not going to go as far as to read them, but the appeal in unmistakable, and I'd like to hear someone tell me why.

I actually enjoyed the first one. :o It's no masterpiece, but at least it had something resembling a decent plot, which is far, far more than can be said for the second one. I hated the second movie.
