So Cadet to Captain in what... a week?!

To me its looking more and more likely that JJ Abrams is going to completely wipe out Kirk's history aboard the USS Farragut. Kirk himself said his first commanding officer was Captain Garrovick. I keep thinking in this movie his first commanding officer is Captain Pike.

What if Star Fleet Academy trained whole crews and assigned them to starships? You see one picture with McCoy sitting next to Kirk (both wearing red), but then skip to another picture on the bridge where Kirk is only wearing black, but McCoy is in uniform as a lieutenant commander. Postings onboard a starship would be determined by academy scores and performance.

How desperate would any incarnation of Starfleet have to be to institute that kind of training regimen?

Or is desperation not an issue, but other factors are?

I remember reading somewhere that either JJ or the writers said that this movie would take place from the crew's childhoods up to a point right before the 5 year mission starts, so i imagine that the story jumps around quite abit. It probably takes place over many years. I think everybody is assuming that after Kirk gets into space the movie slows to "real time". Why would that be true? It could completely go from cadet to command and give only a mention of the faragut, Pikes promotion to fleet captain,Spocks (however many) years under pike before Kirk came along, ect... . The point is, we won't know until May 8 2009.

What if Pike helps Kirk somehow to pass so quickly trough starfleet and eventually take command of the Ent , from the spoilers i'm getting a sense that Pike wants to be Jim's "sponsor" ;)

So there are no other officers left in the chain of command which places a cadet in command of the ship? So only underclassmen cadets are left on the ship at that point?

Hey why not, it worked for DS9's "Valiant" and look how they turned- oh.

I put this compilation together based on how I interpret the progression of events.

I only includes shots where you could actually see his face. Obviously there are moments in the trailer where you see him but not clearly.

I like what you've done here. But you forgot Kirk as a child. ;)

I looked at the empty block and thought "I should probably just put young Kirk there." Then I realized I've spend more than enough time looking at his face already.

Of course, you can look at the sleeves of the rest of the crew. I mean, if McCoy graduates with Kirk, that would ALSO imply he gets promoted to Lt. Commander/Commander in the same short period of time that Kirk does.

I think the poster who said it continues to jump around even after they get onboard the Enterprise is probably correct.

Interesting - shot 6 is clearly reversed; his injuries, including the spot on his forehead, have swapped sides.
I think that is entirely possible tha the shot was reversed...there already is at least one other reversed shot in the trailer (Spock choking Kirk at 1:40).

Random thought, probably not true: maybe Kirk is in the Captain's uniform because is taking the Kobayashi Maru test?

Would be kinda neat...

That would be cool, but I think from what I read (you know, somewhere) that his Kobayashi Maru ship will look more like the Kelvin, which is evidently more dials and gauges and stuff.

I dunno... What's Kirk up to between the Academy and becoming captain of the Enterprise? The question occurred to me as well.

Unlike many, I've liked pretty much all I've seen about this new movie, but to go from renegade cadet to captain of the flagship overnight stretches the limits of imagination.

I hope there is a good, believable explanation.

Hey, dig this....WHAT IF : At the end of the movie when all is said an done, time gets fastforwarded and whe see Kirk and crew preping for the 5 year deal, also hinting at a new TV show .Think about it . ;)

If the spoilers are correct,
then Tarsus IV probably did not happen (if Kirk's father is killed when Kirk is born, then it is unlikely the family would be sent to Tarsus--just a guess on my part). Beyond that, if his normal path from childhood to Starfleet is so disrupted by the timeline alterations, then serving on the Farragut becomes easily dropped as well. As for going from "simple cadet to captain in a week", I suspect, as is frequently done on Lost, that we will be "jumping around" in time and see things that are years apart in short succession.

Not strictly canon I know, but in the videogame "Starfleet Academy", There seems to be training going on with groups of cadets set into starship crews. The commanding offices do extra classes called "Command College" and when they graduate, they are assigned a starship to serve on together.

You missed the shot of him boning the Orion chick.
