Everyone’s entitled to their opinions, obviously. But the idea that anyone could find Voyager better than Enterprise? That just shocks the hell out of me. Sure, Enterprise stumbled a bit in its first two seasons, but at least it gave us main and recurring characters who actually had personalities. By season three, the writing had caught up with the show’s gorgeous production values, and suddenly we had a series with real stakes. Then season four rolled in and gave us top tier world building and stories that actually mattered to the larger Star Trek franchise
Voyager, on the other hand, served up some of the blandest characters in Trek history. It was TNG lite, without the charm, depth, and somehow with even more technobabble. What's depressing is that it had such an amazing premise, that was quickly abandone. Even the sets felt like they were designed by committee.
Sorry, but I just have to defend Enterprise over Voyager whenever someone makes a comparison.
I genuinely love
Enterprise and its characters (didn’t originally but learned to love it when I returned to it a few years later; kind of the classic story by now, I guess), but I really think you’re short-changing
Voyager, because I didn’t find its characters to be bland at all. At least not any blander than the ones on
Enterprise, I guess. I mean yeah, for every Chakotay you have a Mayweather on one end of the spectrum, but then you also have an iconic character like Janeway — which some love to hate, I get it, but you certainly can’t deny the pop-cultural impact of the character, which I don’t think has an equal on
Enterprise, again, as much as I love Archer and the others.
I think like
Deep Space Nine before it and then
Enterprise after it,
Voyager has a really strong premise and while it certainly came short of executing it ideally, I was still happy to be there for the entire journey. I feel similarly about
Enterprise, which is as flawed as
Voyager when it comes to making true on its original premise.
I also can’t deny that nostalgia probably plays a big role in how I’m assessing these shows:
Deep Space Nine and
Voyager are the
Trek shows of my childhood. They are what made me a fan initially.
Enterprise on the other hand came out when I was a young adult and for the first time I was more interested in doing what young adults do instead of watching
Trek. So I guess I just don’t have – and never could have – the same kind of fond memories for
Enterprise as I do for its predecessors.
In the end it just comes down to personal preference, I’m sure. I’ll give you that, though: As much as I love
Voyager‘s 90s aesthetic,
Enterprise is definitely the superior show
visually. They poured their combined learnings from three
Trek shows into the creative side of
Enterprise, and you can really tell.
