Size Of The New Enterprise (large images)

I don't really care if it's bigger or smaller, but looking at those pictures, I forgot how butt ugly the Enterprise D looks. I always hated that the nacells were shorter than the saucer section. It just never looked right. The Enterprise E was better, I just wish they didn't try so hard to make it look like Voyager.

What if the sizes of the newer, clearly larger ships of the next gen are 'wrong'. What if we visually just upsize them to reflect the larger size of the JJ Enterprise? You'd have an Ent-D of almost a mile long and I don't have a problem with that!

I know there are people who will violently disagree with you. I am not one of them. As I have stated here before, my first reaction upon seeing the E-D was that it looked like a starship mated with a space mollusk. (No wonder that alien pod creature latched onto it!)

2,000 Ft long is good, now we can have a Galaxy that is the size of a Romulan Warbird, and a Warbird that is half the size of a Star-Dreadnought(super stardestroyer). The borg ship would be as big as V'ger! V'ger would be as big as the Death Star!

that'd be borg cube size... bigger.... I like that.... :bolian:

Nope, not even close. A mile is 1600 meters long. A Borg-cube is 28 cubic kilometers, which is 28 000 000 000 cubic meters. That's a little over 3,000 by 3,000, by 3,000 meters. That twice the length of such a bigger E-D.

Can somebody PLEASE adjust the NU-E to the corrected 2000 f 610m length?

That still is a big ass starship. :)

Gizmodo, as reported on trekmovie.com, says the Enterprise is 725.35 meters (2380 feet) long.
Here's a link to the Gizmodo story:
http://gizmodo.com/5253324/how-big-is-the-new-enterprise-compared-to-galactica

Already linked to and being debated.

The problems we're running into is that the numbers being told to us by those in charge isn't lining up with what is on screen.

Didn't look hard enough for the link, I guess. Should've just figured that since it's dated May 14, it'd already be here. :)

I still think that a lot of the scaling issues/conflicts are a result of a mid-stream production/scale change.

This might be causing the differences/conflicts between IML and Bad Robot Productions.

Could be no one is really nailing down the "official" size just yet.

I wouldn't be at all surprise at all (though I'd be please) if the NuEnterprise winds up shrinking down closer the the TMP E, or somewhere in between the 305m & 610m - say 457.5m (which would be a more reasonable size - IMO)

Well, isn't it acase of unless its on screen then it ain't canon?

It amazes me that fans can deride and ridicule other fans for wanting to stay close to canon when it came to JJVerse, yet on the issue of how big the Enterprise is, fans can debate it for pages and pages based on what a website says.

It's a funny world.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I think the new enterprise size is a complete cockup! i have just thought about it, and i can see 2 decks in the saucer rim, and judging by the size of the windows, its this big:

comparisongabsss.jpg

You can still fit that engineering into the secondary hull

Anyway, i will go for the new enterprise to be about excelsior size, no bigger!

Because you are clearly biased!

Oh? how? cause i dont want star wars sizes?? lol. i just dont think there is the need for that much space. i dont like change :P

You can't fit all those new shuttles inside a shuttlebay the size of the original TOS E.

It simply can't happen. Why? The TOS shuttle seats 5-6 tops. The new shuttle seats 12 or more, plus gear stowage. In the shuttle approach-to-the-hangar-bay shots, we see the new shuttles having room to do some maneuvering in-flight inside the shuttle to dock with one of about 6-8 rack structures.

Where's the room for that in the TOS E?

It's a Tardis?

Sort of like Voyager's shittlebay? ;)

Did you see Kirk and everyone else standing UNDER the ship in the Iowa fleet yards? Did you see the size of the shuttle next to the Ent shuttle bay when in space, or near the ship?
Yes, I did (for the fourth time last night), and I was watching very carefully. To my eye, when Kirk rode up to the Enterprise at dawn and watched her being built from a distance, the ship looked massive--definitely much larger than the original starships, very possibly a half mile long (look at the size of those buildings underneath the Enterprise). But then when the shuttle piloted by Captain Pike flew under the Enterprise a few scenes later, the ship appeared to have shrunk back to TMP size. Then three years later when McCoy and Kirk's shuttle flies by the Enterprise in space, the ship re-embiggened to half-mile size (look how tiny the shuttle looks while flying over the saucer and when it flies by the rim of the saucer and the starboard warp nacelle).

So yeah, there were definitely some scaling problems throughout the movie, but nothing that was so egregious that it detracted from my enjoyment of the best movie in franchise history (there--I said it!). Given the overwhelming evidence of gargantuan scale in the live action scenes (engineering, the communications bay, the walkup to the hangar area) and the enormous capacity of the shuttlebay required for the number of shuttles glimpsed, I can definitely believe that the new Enterprise is 2,000+ feet long.

I wouldn't mind it being about the size of a Galaxy class. I always liked how big Galactica seemed to be, and how it moved slowly during battles when taking up positions.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I've done a little analysis -- aside from the fact that some people might not like the 700 meter length, it's actually quite consistent with what's shown on screen.

Damned good sleuthing! It's really hard to accept this beast as being Refit size with evidence like this. As I've told folks in other forums, it's not that Starfleet couldn't have built a ship that size, it just feels very odd given the squint-at-it similar shapes and stylistic elements and proportions to the Refit. Four decks through the saucer seems to fit bang-on. Of course, some decks will have varying punch-throughs and access heights, but the average center-to-center distance looks really good.

Makes me all the more glad I blueprinted all my own major designs. :)
