I'm all for confident women not wearing their underwear!
I'm a linguist myself and I have to say... no linguist, male OR female, would be diving into that bar fight. Have I missed some new media convention out there of inaccurately portraying linguists as badasses? Because we're really not.It's not a question of sex at all.
Oh, and way to go feminists undermining your own messages. It seems the original ranter has internalized the idea that "fighting = masculine = good" and "not fighting = feminine = bad". Frankly, I would be disappointed if anyone tried to make Uhura into some kind of action girl just to please "feminists". Some baseline Academy training in self-defense is believable, but not even the real world military expects its linguists to fight like badasses. Starfleet isn't even a military!
(That aside, I think the underwear scene was awesome simply because Uhura was so confident in her undies -- no shrieking "Eek! Don't look!" for her!)
BTW it occurs to me Uhura had a lot of screen time clothed and she was not only competent but exemplary in her abilities. I guess they didn't notice that part?

Now that you mention it, I have to admit that my own department has a female ROTC student. However, I believe they are the exceptions to the general rule that ling kiddies rarely pose much of a threat to anyone.
I'll let you tell that to the very badass female linguist I went to college with. Granted, she was ROTC and is now in some elite something or other in the army, so there's a chance she MIGHT be an exception.

Some men like big women...I know you're out there...I'm sure you won't admit to it on this board, but I guarantee there are plenty of chubby chasers abound....plus I know after a few drinks..standards do get lowered..ok let me stop...but beauty does come in all shapes and sizes....we need to subsribe to that mode of thinking more often. I know attraction is key...believe me I'm guilty of it too...but I wish it wasn't that way.

Go to a child custody hearing, watch a man be cut off from his children and tell me men don't suffer from discrimination. Go to a divorce court and watch a man be made homeless and tell me that. Go to a prison and ask a few of the inmates who have been raped and had their cases ignored.
The answer to your question is yes. The movie would have suffered because the relationship between Spock and Uhura is one of its strengths. The box office and the strong reviews agree with me too.

I agree entirely. Physical attraction totally plays a key role, and that's completely okay. We need to 1. stop pretending that's not the case, and 2. stop criticizing people for what type of figure they are attracted to.

1) There is nothing inflamed about me...even my hemmorhoids are at peace. Yeah yeah I might of spelled that wrong.
2) I will agree with you that men get fucked at custody/divorce hearings...but you can't compare that with the plight of minorities...that pales in comparision....
3) We'll just have to disagree about the movie needing the romantic element. You feel it did and I feel that it really was not necessary...case closed.
4) In order to realize something I would need to know what the word meant...and we alllllllll know that I have no idea what acronym means...I mean I can't spell and write the queens english and you expect me to know the meaning of this hard word?
