Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

ass and linguist shouldn't be in the same sentence.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

I'm a linguist myself and I have to say... no linguist, male OR female, would be diving into that bar fight. Have I missed some new media convention out there of inaccurately portraying linguists as badasses? Because we're really not. :p It's not a question of sex at all.

Oh, and way to go feminists undermining your own messages. It seems the original ranter has internalized the idea that "fighting = masculine = good" and "not fighting = feminine = bad". Frankly, I would be disappointed if anyone tried to make Uhura into some kind of action girl just to please "feminists". Some baseline Academy training in self-defense is believable, but not even the real world military expects its linguists to fight like badasses. Starfleet isn't even a military!

(That aside, I think the underwear scene was awesome simply because Uhura was so confident in her undies -- no shrieking "Eek! Don't look!" for her!)

BTW it occurs to me Uhura had a lot of screen time clothed and she was not only competent but exemplary in her abilities. I guess they didn't notice that part?

RAMA

That doesn't count because she was in her underwear at one point. IRL, confident, competent women don't wear underwear.

I'm all for confident women not wearing their underwear!

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Wasn't there a feminist review of The Incredibles attacking the movie for having a "traditional" family?

This thread just got interesting.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

I'll let you tell that to the very badass female linguist I went to college with. Granted, she was ROTC and is now in some elite something or other in the army, so there's a chance she MIGHT be an exception. ;)

Now that you mention it, I have to admit that my own department has a female ROTC student. However, I believe they are the exceptions to the general rule that ling kiddies rarely pose much of a threat to anyone. ;)

Only if their confidence isn't very much misplaced.

Glad I'm not the only one who had that thought. Don't feel quite as guilty now. It's like the old SNL lesbian joes - 2 real live lesbians making out sounds like a good idea...until you see real live lesbians.

(By the way, I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just recalling a joke.)

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Like your old picture for instance...you had a cute girl up there as your pic :p
I hope you didn't feel too attracted to my girlfriend? :shifty: :D

No Papi...I don't swing that way. No offense to any gays...you know I love you and got your back.

Only if their confidence isn't very much misplaced.

OK good imagery replaced by bad imagery...stop it.
I'll bet she's very confident, even without her thong. Oh wait, is that even a thong?

Some men like big women...I know you're out there...I'm sure you won't admit to it on this board, but I guarantee there are plenty of chubby chasers abound....plus I know after a few drinks..standards do get lowered..ok let me stop...but beauty does come in all shapes and sizes....we need to subsribe to that mode of thinking more often. I know attraction is key...believe me I'm guilty of it too...but I wish it wasn't that way.

Unfortunately for all of the slash fans out there, that joke cuts both ways.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Then just control yourself and ignore me outright...! Go ahead....do it!!!

What I'm going to do is do you a favour and leave out your more inflammatory comments before you get this thread locked.

I understand what you're saying about empathy but it's certainly not the same thing as first hand experience. Don't tell me that you have even a remote idea of what it's like to experience racism -- being a white male yourself....please....that is laughable and that's just what I'm doing...so hey thanks for the laugh good pal o' mine.

Oh, I don't ? You think men do not suffer from discrimination ? Everyone does. Go to a child custody hearing, watch a man be cut off from his children and tell me men don't suffer from discrimination. Go to a divorce court and watch a man be made homeless and tell me that. Go to a prison and ask a few of the inmates who have been raped and had their cases ignored.

Blah blah blah...you didn't answer the question. Would the movie of suffered if they omitted this plot element. A yes or no will suffice. Oh no!!! But you can't answer me because you're ignoring me :(

The answer to your question is yes. The movie would have suffered because the relationship between Spock and Uhura is one of its strengths. The box office and the strong reviews agree with me too.

So it's ok that you're spelling civilisation like that because why you're english? Well most of us are from the usa and we don't spell it like that so it really makes it hard to understand you...just a bit of advise for you...I know you didn't ask for it...don't you hate when people offer advise that you don't want? :p

You realise "USA" is an acronym right ? Ooooh, I just said "realise" didn't I ?

I agree entirely. Physical attraction totally plays a key role, and that's completely okay. We need to 1. stop pretending that's not the case, and 2. stop criticizing people for what type of figure they are attracted to.

Okay, got it, joke wasn't funny. :D

Some men like big women...I know you're out there...
Look and feel is important, you are right. Perhaps even more important then the figure of somebody. But it helps if you don't have to follow roadsigns whenever you're trying to find her special spots. :D

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Back to the feminists.

How come there are no Meninists? It is because they need no validation?

The word is "masculinist", just so you know.

I suggest those of you who think men aren't on the receiving end of discrimination have a good read through that Wikipedia article, by the way.

Brings me back to the subject at hand, really - how do we know James Kirk was in bed with Gaila by his own free will given Orion female's ability to compel men to do as they wish ? See what problems we can dig up if we really try ?

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Can the bickering stop now?? Who cares about grammar and English...this isn't helping the thread any. Started out so well.

RAMA..thinking I may have to offer bouncer services...

Because even if he was being brainwashed I don't think he would mind...

Again, just kidding.

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

Okay, RAMA's right; back to women in miniskirts.

Who invented them by the way? Gotta love that guy.

EDIT: It was a woman, Mary Quant. Now if that isn't the best reason for a woman to wear a miniskirt. Feminists rejoice!

Re: 'Sigh'...A feminist review of Star Trek XII

^^^ Ok well I'll be more adult here....*everybody take note that I'm being mature because it shan't happen again* LOL LOL .....and besides I gotta get outta here.
But Squiggy said to stop so he's not like the moderator so I'm going to abide by it. So I'll keep it brief.

1) There is nothing inflamed about me...even my hemmorhoids are at peace. Yeah yeah I might of spelled that wrong.

2) I will agree with you that men get fucked at custody/divorce hearings...but you can't compare that with the plight of minorities...that pales in comparision....

3) We'll just have to disagree about the movie needing the romantic element. You feel it did and I feel that it really was not necessary...case closed.

4) In order to realize something I would need to know what the word meant...and we alllllllll know that I have no idea what acronym means...I mean I can't spell and write the queens english and you expect me to know the meaning of this hard word? How bout you figure this akronim out: WDYGFU. Yeah it's one Star Trek movie titles as an anagram....yeah that's what it is!

5) I have no hard feelings towards you. Love Cakes xoxoxooxoxx
