Should the Voyager crew have upgraded their old Starfleet uniforms to the style seen in First Contact and beyond?

It equally wouldnt have hurt them.
In fact, it's possible that the casual viewers tuning in just because they liked First Contact might go "huh...wots wiv da different clothes?" and promptly switched off again because TV audiences are that stupid and fickle. (so we're told)

I'd have quite liked it actually, but they didn't really have any opportunity to do so before Pathfinder kicked off proper, and of course they're 'rationing replicator use'

(to do stuff like build entire fleets of shuttles and a shitload of torpedoes presumably)

If anything, having them in the old uniforms better reflected a sense that they had fallen out of touch with Starfleet and were still far from home. By the time they did regain contact with Starfleet, those old uniforms had become Voyager uniforms and reflected the unity that had developed in Janeway's crew over the years.

I've heard it rumoured that they wanted the cast to change to the new ones, however by that point in the production they were spending so much money buying hundreds of gallons of Just For Men to keep Robert Beltran's hair black that they simply couldn't afford it.

Replicating new clothes would be an extravagance, what with all those shuttle/shuttle parts/ torpedeo casings, hull platings and most importantly coffee they need. :P

If anything, having them in dated uniforms added to their "lost" aura (even though it'd have been as simple as walking to the replicator in-universe). Like when the TNG crew found Riker's copy in the old uniform with the sailor suit shoulders.

Did you see a laundry?

I didn't see a laundry.

It was easier to make new clothes rather than wash old ones.

Neelix probably had to go to his ship in the hold to clean his suits.

back to the real world.

Rick and ira flipped a coin.

From what they could steal from First Contact wardrobe and props deptartments, one show would get the Borg costumes, and the other would get the new Starfleet costumes.

here's the pickle.

After DS9 finished, Voyager could have gotten those Starfleet costumes free and clear.

(My nephew has been forever wearing his sisters pink handme downs.)

But those suits would have been getting a little groady.

beltrans new uniform would already have been worm by Frakes and Brooks.

janeways Uniform owuld already have been wor... Dee and bev wore blue. Could they change the trim, or would they kate be wearing an "extras" sloppy seconds?

But you get the point.

See, I think that the psychologists at SF Command would be recommending that Voyager be told to change to the new uniforms...probably in Message in a Bottle, but certainly by the time that they were making regular contact in Season 6.

The new uniforms would help Voyager feel more connected to Earth and psychologically would subtract from the "Seperated from the rest of the Fleet" mentality...

I also think that the reason for the revolving door of red shirts and extras and the B-Cast turning up in different coloured uniforms from time to time is that Janeway rotated the assignments of the crew from department to department every so often...I mean think about it, you're going to be the guy scrubbing plasma conduits for the next 75 years, with no hope for advancement? You'd top yourself!

That would also explain why there are sometimes corpsmen working for the doctor and why from time to time, the size of the engineering/security staff gets bigger and smaller!

The XO is in charge of day to day crew placement.

The captain Just signs off on his decisions or tells him to buck his ideas up.

(Tom was XO for Two Months in Resolutions.)

Which brings us back to Good Shepherd.

Those below decks people stayed below decks.

How about in generations, when the wardrobe department didn't have enough costumes for all the cast and extras that every uniform they had from every season of tng (Which changed slightly to dramatically from year to year.) was used... And Geordie half way through the movie switched uniforms.

but then, do you tell a blind fellah when his shirt is inside out?

I have a theory about that and what should have happened on Voyager...we never see a laundry, but there must have been one, it would be terribly inefficient to discombobulate clothes just because they need a wash - so my theory is that when they start to wear out and need replacing, Voyager's crew would replace them with the FC uniforms...

That's what happened in Generations, SF was phasing in the new uniforms, but because E-D was on the frontier, it wasn't critical that they just switched straight away, so the crew kept washing their old uniforms, then replaced them with the new ones when the need arose!

It wouldn't have made sense...since they weren't even in proper touch with Starfleet until season 4, and somehow I doubt the first thing on their minds would be wearing new Starfleet uniforms.
Can't believe people even voted yes, theres absolutely no logic in it.

No, the new uniforms were ugly. I have never understood why Starfleet switched to those in the first place.

One thing I did like about the grey uniforms was how much they resembled TOS uniforms after the grey jackets were removed.

Again, psychology, they came about as the Federation was coming into a far more violent time in its history, and the darker colours reflect that...the bright colours make the Federation look softer and are more conciliatory, and the jump-suit look of the VOY uniforms make the Federation look less of a threat -

The FC Uniforms really are uniforms, there's no question of that...they are dark and formal and they give a much different perception of the person wearing it than the TNG/VOY uniforms...

According to Memory Alpha, they were introduced circa, 2373 - when war with the Klingons is raging, war with the Dominion is beginning to look certain...

Since Wolf-359, SF has been subtly reconfiguring itself into far more of a military, defensive organisation, Admirals like Hansen give way to Admirals like Nechayev, ships like the E-D are replaced with more maneuverable and powerful and physically intimidating Sovereigns and Intrepids and the uniforms reflect that trend...

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

I think being lost and homesick, the last things on their mind would be keeping up with the latest fashion. That would come off as pretty shallow.

It's not fashion though, it's military uniform...and if you're homesick, wearing an old uniform would only make the seperation more pronounced, especially when they get video messages from other people in the service...
