Should TOS characters be seen or referred to?

I'm wondering which ST character will pop up in Discovery's pilot. TNG Had McCoy pop up in it's pilot, Jean-Luc Picard popped up in DS9's pilot, Quark i believe popped up in Voyager, and Zefram Cochrane made a cameo in Enterprise's pilot.

so any guesses?

Spock could definately pop up. Not sure what rank he would have had back then.

They should just go left field and achievable, and given her good relations with the Rodenberry family....
...Marina Sirtis as Deannas grandmother, another ambassador, good alongside Spocks mum, and they could probably get her to do the computer voice for bonus points. She's also guest starred in the last episode of enterprise, and an episode of Voyager...I think Ds9 is the only Trek she wasn't in, and Frakes has been in every series, so we need Grandpa Riker up in Alaska looking in the sky with a grizzly beard. 'Not letting my kids take up that careeer....hey is that Russia over there?'

It really should be an actor from Enterprise portraying their actual character. T'Pol and Phlox would be the likely choices. Although my personal preference would be a historical film of Archer's speech-- or one of his speeches.

Wesley Crusher could pop up (in a flash of light), say "whoops" and pop back out 2 seconds later.

If they show any TOS characters in Discovery, I'd hope they do some sort of archive footage rather than a full-on recast. A solution not unlike the "Farpoint history" scenes in TNG's "All Good Things". During one such scene, Picard had a subspace conversation with (archive footage of) young, beardless Riker.

Or perhaps use "Trials and Tribble-ations"-style special effects to have (say) a younger McCoy or Spock walking through a background scene.

Besides, weren't these characters supposed to be like Bond or Batman and there wasn't a problem endlessly recasting them?

Batman adaptations have no running continuity from one era and/or studio to another, so there's no cultural investment / importance of casting that matches something on the level of TOS.

With Bond, some recasting choices were so bad, few have anything to say about it--other than the fact a superior actor was replaced. To this day, many Bond fans issue a collective groan just mentioning "Roger Moore." On the other hand, its not a stretch to say Connery remains the most representative, iconic face of the filmed character--one all others are judged against. That's how powerful the Connery portrayal is in the popular culture. TOS actors are (arguably) more associated with the mere thought of TOS.
