Let's please leave Data for the next long, drawn-out "bring back" thread.

I liked his death anyway. He sacrificed his life to save his friends. What more do you want? A ten-hour speech first?

Maybe the circumstances that lead to his death to be less contrived and stoopid. ;)

Which is why Spock's death in TWOK is perfect to me. I see no other way the situation could have been solved. He simply had no other choice, no other option.

Not so much with Jadzia, Data, Kirk or Janeway.

So I've managed to lose numerous favourites. Janeway would be my favourite VOY character. Jadzia for DS9. Probably Trip for ENT ('cos I can't really count Shran as a regular). But all of these deaths - and Sisko's onscreen departure - have lead to some wonderfully poignant scenes, some canonical and some in the licensed fiction. I love perky Ezri and we'd never have met her without Jadzia dying.

Well said.

Even Trip's death, which I absolutely loathed, led to what I thought was the one terrific scene in TATV, where T'Pol was packing up his stuff. Since I had been recently widowed, I watched that scene intently. Jolene *nailed* it.

No, not at all - that's why I said they needed only part of that interminably-long "bonus" scene. But it set up the pay-off at the end, and with no set-up, the pay-off was greatly diminished.

But I wasn't emotionally affected by Data's death as I had been by those of Spock, Kirk, Jadzia and Sisko - and yeah, Janeway - so I was left feeling a little underwhelmed by Data's sacrifice. He was my favourite.

I and my family were left floored by Data's death. It was a "they didn't...", "Nahh, he's...", "OMG they just killed Data!" shock thing. A good shock thing.

And I didn't think anything leading up to it was stupid. A little silly perhaps (in a good way IMO), but I enjoyed every moment of that movie. I know I'm in the minority about this :)

Back on topic: Without Janeway, who's the next strongest female TrekLit character?

52 pages in, and Janeway's still dead. Just sayin'.

As Quinn says from the desert road representing the continuum in "Deathwish": I traveled the road many times. Sat on the porch, played the games, been the dog, everything. I was even the scarecrow for a while.

Janeway is frolicking with the Q. Maybe she's the dog right now . . . or the scarecrow! Maybe she'll come back as an omnipotent being! :techman:

You have to bring Janeway back!

Janeway is one of the most influential characters for young women out there. She represents being strong and being female.... she shows young girls that they can be in charge, that they can be smart, and that they can be respected as a person and NOT a SEX object.

I idolized Janeway as a young teen on the show, she is part of the reason that I am now in grad school to be a rocket scientist... seriously...

I love to share Janeway with my little 8 year old sister, because i know that the Janeway character empowers women. IMO, No other female character in star trek can offer that kind of idol. No other character can show young girls out there to that they can be everything they want. In charge, respected, and education... and still be a female....

Janeway is Amazing... Star Trek would be smart to bring her back...

I have to disagree with you on Janeway being the only female character in Trek that offers that kind of empowerment.

In fact, I find that statement offensive. Star Trek has offered strong female characters over the years, both on TV and in the books. What about Uhura or Dax or Shelby? Are they not strong characters who empowered women, who showed that women can be strong, feminine, educated, and in charge? I think those characters are just as capable, if not more so, than Janeway in providing a positive role model for girls.

Yes dax was strong and was a scientist.. yes Uhura represented a lot for women and women of color, she was even a spokes person for NASA.... most female characters on star trek have 1 strong enduring trait that can be used to show women empowerment...

But IMO. Janeway did far more than Crusher ever could, or any other women character. I stand by what I say.

Janeway was the captain, she was not some emotional empath in tight outfits. Janeway was in charge of the ship and crew, everyday, not just when Sisko was off playing with the Profits.

To many girls and women that was a HUGE thing to see everyday. A Female who was the LEADER. And the Janeway character was not dumb, she knew a lot of the science and could solve the issue working with the Sr. staff. She did not need an android in engineering to do the work for her while she fiddled in her ready room...

Every women I have been in school with, work at NASA with, who is activity into science and into trek, Everyone that i have talked with Praise the Janeway character and the power, the role model, and the strength she shows to women, especially women in science and exploration.

^ That's wonderful. I've always hated Janeway and Voyager. I looked at those seven seasons of Voyager as a waste of my time and Paramount's money. I've always thought the celluloid they wasted on that show could have gone to better use. Now after I read your posting I'm realizing that it wasn't a waste. It didn't meet my needs but it did what Trek so often does. It inspired! Because of Voyager the world is getting someone who is sure to help advance science a hundredfold. And you're passing it forward to your little sister. I hope she's every bit as inspired as yourself. The world needs more people who want to better it. Your posting has made me smile. See? :)

Of course not everyone is going to like every show. I for one cant stand Enterprise, and most of TNG annoys me even though it was what I was brought up on.

I might not be able to convince the "power to be" to bring Janeway back as much as I want them to keep writing about her. I have Mosaic memorized, own 3 copies of it now, and i even have 2 copies of the audio book. If Janeway is in it, I will read it....

But I would like to point out exactly what you mentioned. Even though she didn't float your boat, nonetheless the Janeway character DID inspire countless women to go into science.

It was not a Waste to everyone, it was not a failure to everyone. Voyager and Janeway served as a new window into exploration and was able to inspire many people.

Bring Janeway back, keep the inspiration alive... If you dont like her, dont buy the book...

No matter what you can not please everyone, theres always going to be someone disagreeing with the new shows, books, plots...ect... BUT regardless, that does not mean that it will not serve as a message, an inspiration, a or motivation to someone else. *unless its Motion Picture maybe...* For every episode I dont like, someone else will find a reason to love that episode....

Same with Characters...

I say bring her back. It was a stupid ass killing to begin with.
What's the problem with having a female captain???

Like everyone says... not every show is for everyone. Not everyone captain is for everyone. I don't like a few other series in the Trek world. But I would not say 'kill' or get rid of anyone from them. They all have their fan base. why try and divide and conquer??? It's all Trek. You may not like Janeway but you may like the tough no nonsense role she portrayed. Or you may have seen it as a bitch.. which is wrong. Or like they tried to portray her as a no nonsense woman who would do anything for her crew.
There is no square peg or round peg that any captain can fit into, so stop trying to do it here.

Janeway is a captain for the people and by the people. They come first no matter what. How many other captains can say that. She constantly put her life on the line for any crew member or any life form that needed it.

Bring her back.

Okay, can someone please point to me ANYWHERE that anyone has said there was a problem with a female captain?

Anyone?

Anyone at all?

Didn't think so.

No problem at all - if you like female captains, why not read Destiny or A Singular Diestiny, or wait for the upcoming Typhon Pact novel with Captain Ezri Dax?

and it's understandable that a fan doesn't like it when his or her favorite character dies... but I don't remember the Data, Jadzia or Sisko fans reacting like we've seen on this thread (not that it matters, obviously ) back in the day... and those departures were on screen and not "just in some book"...

why try and divide and conquer???
Who wants to conquer us? Pocket Books?!

You may not like Janeway but you may like the tough no nonsense role she portrayed. Or you may have seen it as a bitch.. which is wrong.
thank you for clearing that up. I now stand corrected

um.. what?

as opposed to other Trek captains like... and... um... :shifty:
okay, just HOW is Janeway different from the other main Trek captains, other than being a female??:wtf:
