They should stop making episodes and reboot it as a film series with J.J. Abrams at the helm.

Works for me. It can be about Mr. Burns and Hank Scorpio competing to take over the world with the Simpsons caught in the middle.

The time for bowing out gracefully has long since passed...

They should keep going so long as the show is still profitible. The voice actors are good in their parts and I would hate think that Homer, Bart, Lisa and the others aren't off doing their thing even if I'm not watching.

What can I say? I'm sentimental. ;)

The show has been going through the motions since after Season 9. There hasn't been much, apart from the theatrical movie, that is worthy of note since the turn of the century.

Over the years, I occasionally catch an episode, but I don't laugh. Black Friday brought some deep discounts to the DVDs and I thought what the hell and I've been running mini marathons when I get the time. Conclusion: while season eight has a handful of great episodes, it's mostly stuff I don't like. Season nine was when I remember not even liking The Treehouse of Horror. I watched season one because it was shocking TV when it was on, but I didn't really like it. So for me, the show's greatness was between seasons two and seven, and that's kind of the problem for me. The Simpson's was almost too good. It's writing staff was notoriously made up of very well educated people and they seemed to have a strangle gold on pop culture. I liked the show less and less as people like Conan O'Brien left to do other things. I honestly can't tell if the new stuff is bad or if it's superbly catering to a demographic that just isn't me. Unfunny, or am I just too old?

Cancel it, leave it on, either way. It affects me no more.

I'm with Alidar. Doesn't hurt me one bit to have it on the air. Really, I don't get people calling for anything to be canceled. Don't like it? Don't watch it. It's easy.

Fans want to see something they care about go out on a high note rather than continuing on as a mockery of itself.

Fans aren't entitled to anything.

What? This reply has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand or my post.

The show first got terrible in about season 9, but it's gotten a bit better since then. Now it's got its fair share of good episodes, but I only watch it when Amazing Race is off season. There was one episode a couple years ago where the school was separated into boys half and girls half that I think was up to the standards of the early run, but those episodes are certainly few and far between.

I think it should end just because I want the writers to be in control of what the last episode is instead of having a surprise series finale when Harry Shearer has a stroke or something.

A huge finale episode to a show that will just get another movie after the show ends would be find of silly.

I can still watch the show and laugh, so if they still have an audience I say go for it.

Even if I didn't find the show funny anymore, I don't believe in wishing for shows to be canceled just because I don't care for them. As much as I hate most reality shows, they do have large audiences. There are plenty of other things for me to watch instead.

But there's plenty of fans that still enjoy the show. My brother has been watching the show consistently since it began and still enjoys it. There's a sliding scale for most fans regarding when the show was at its best. Most say seasons 3-10. Some include the first two seasons in that number, others include 11, 12, whatever. And whether people wish to believe it or not, there are many people who love what they've been doing recently. There have been so many seasons and episodes at this point, that show really should just be divided into eras. "Doctor Who" ran for quite some time originally, but you can find plenty of fans that have a favorite Doctor or era from that show.

It has to be popular still to be on the air, plus the toys make an insane amount of money. There will even be LEGO sets this year based on it.

Then fans like your brother should want the show to continue because they still enjoy the show. All I'm saying is that fans don't enjoy seeing their favourite shows dragged through the dirt so that a company can squeeze a bit more money out of them. Of course, whether a show is being dragged through the dirt or riding high is completely subjective.

I can see what you're saying. There have definitely been shows that I felt really got bad by the end of their runs. "Voyager" being one of them. But I tend to look at things from the point of view of the creative people behind the show. The direction the "Voyager" writers went just wasn't my cup of tea, but that's what they wanted.

People have called current "Simpsons" lots of things like "Awful", "Garbage", etc. But I'm sure the writers are just trying to put out the best product that they can. They're likely aware that many fans have since left the show so they're probably writing for a new set of fans.

Did you forget your own post?

Emphasis mine. Talking about what "fans want" is indeed entitled, especially when it involves deciding that a show should be canceled rather than being allowed to continue.

The show's ratings are still good enough to keep it on the air and profitable. That means enough people are watching it to keep it alive. Clearly, someone's enjoying it, so who are you to say it should be axed?

How is it anything but a sense of entitlement that leads people to think in such a way? "This show is no longer what I want, so it needs to die! I don't care if others enjoy it!"

I don't think the fans who seem 'Entitled' to have a show they don't like canceled are any worse than the fans who are being holier than thou about not being 'Entitled'.

It's a perfectly legitimate viewpoint to think a television show should exit in its prime instead of being allowed to dwindle down gradually well past its welcome.

The Simpsons is an important show to me and I'd rather see it go out in memorable fashion than just get quietly cancelled because one of the main voice actors was found dead in his apartment. I don't think "I" deserve it so much as I think the show does, and I would prefer my last memory of the Simpsons to be some grand fitting finale.

The reason I think the show first got bad around season 9 is that this is the season where the show, for four or five years, became the "Homer Falldown Show". The writers in said period were under the impression that Simpsons was funny not because of the clever satire, irony and parody, but because Homer got hit on the head a lot. But like I said, it's gotten a little better again since that. The show has gone up and down with the quality of its writing staff.

Wanting a thing is not the same thing as feeling entitled to have that thing. Good lord, am I not allowed to express a preference for something that I enjoyed without being accused of being an entitled fan who wants to take away something that other people enjoy simply due to my own bitterness?

Should it end? Probably, yeah. Do I want it to end? At this point? Nah.

Isn't it near the record for longest running prime time show ever? May as well let them hit that because, well, if you're close no one else is likely beat you to it. And this weeks "Steal this Episode" about piracy was actually a really good episode, I suggest you all watch it.

Even at it's worst it's still better than pretty much anything else on network television. It will probably keep running until a primary cast member dies.

According to Wikipedia it's in the lead by 5 seasons. Gunsmoke is #2 with South Park only 8 seasons behind. And of course, this is for scripted US TV only.

Well, that didn't happen. The show's high note has passed and if it got canceled this year, it certainly wouldn't be going out on a high note. The last time that was even remotely possible was right after the movie came out.

Given that, why are you in favor of laying off the entire Simpsons staff and putting them out of work? Or if not you, why should "fans" get that vote?
