Spoilers Sherlock Series 4 Discussion Thread

Season 4 promised more Moriarty and I was excited but I am to presume the whole did you miss me thing was Sherlock evil sister.
The paper and drug seem to be real, the scene where Culverton takes it from his daughter actually happened, later someone, we don't know who yet, puts Culverton and Eurus is contact, and he gives the paper to her.
Could this have even been Moriarty's final post-mortem plan? We don't know who set up Sherlock's sister to be in possession of the note Smith took from his daughter. But being in possession of very seedy info like that was Moriarty's MO. This could still circle back to him, even though that's somewhat unlikely

But actually Euros and Eurus (the latin spelling of the Greek word, the change from -os to -us is common) are both correct spellings for the ancient Greek god of the East Wind. But I'll shut up now. ;)
Hehe yeah....in Greek it is like this...Ευρος.

Probally said like close to this...Evros

I meant to ask this after "The Six Thatchers," but since it appeared again, I'll ask now: Does anyone know who the painting in Mycroft's office is suppose to represent? Anyone in particular or is just some painting he has.

Just because Moffat has said he has it plotted, doesn't mean the series is going to happen. Until BBC says a fifth series has been commissioned, I won't believe it's actually happening.

I thought it was Euros, too, although I'm not sure why. Possibly and indirectly because of Euros Lyn.
The only picture I can think of his the one of the Queen
Sorry just seen that its been answered.

Really liked this one too, kept us both guessing and I really liked the revelation at the end, as for John beating Sherlock like he did, he is a trained killer after all as he reminded Sherlock a while back.

It's a very young Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. (could be her first royal portrait, not sure though.)

It's just struck me that it might be the same portrait James Bond has in his office in OHMSS

And you would be correct!

Gatiss is a huge Bond fan, so it makes sense. :)

I'm not as disappointed by the Thatcherized update of "The Six Napoleons" being dealt with so casually, because that mystery plot has become a bit too well-known by now. .

I was thinking the pearl would have been a microdot from the 1980's--with the busts dating to that period.
Well--we got a flash drive instead.

SHERLOCK comes on 7pm Eastern--6 Central tonight.

I decided to watch the two episodes again as a lead-up to tonight's episode and I found myself enjoying both of them more this time around.

One of the biggest issues I had with "The Six Thatchers" was the sudden change of plot direction halfway through the episode, but now knowing what happens, it doesn't bother me. A key element of the story is Sherlock's obsession with Moriarty and how her couldn't perceive that out-of-place hanging thread as anything other than Moriarty's doing. During the bloodhound sequence, Sherlock says the situation has to be Moriarty's doing because it's "too bizarre, too baroque." He wasn't even beginning to entertain the possibility of the situation to do with anything else, let alone Mary.

Us viewers were the same way. We came in with an expectation: The immediate dealing with Moriarty. We didn't expect to have to wait longer than the opening episode, so we were blindsided by Mary's story. I myself mentioned in my review how I was expecting not to see more about Mary's background until some time further down the line (if at all), so for me at least, I had two different expectations shattered. Because of that reaction, I found the sudden shift of storyline to be very jarring and distracting. This time around, it felt much more natural.

I resolved my other concern with the episode (John's reaction to Mary's death and blaming Sherlock for it) with the review of last week's episode, and as a result, I didn't have any issues with the ending this time around. Well, aside from Mary jumping in front of the speeding bullet. That moment would have worked better if she jumped as Vivian raised her arm and then she immediately fired (instead of pausing for dramatic effect), which have been more believable with Mary's instincts as an assassin to predict Vivian's actions.

"The Lying Detective" had less needed to resolved, so I didn't gain that much more insight. Instead, I paid more attention to the little clues involving Eurus and her part in all of it. Somehow I missed during the final scene that she told John that Culverton gave her Faith's note and that they she was put in touch with him through a "mutual friend."

Just finished watching it here, regardless of what ever anyone else says, I and Mrs-Dimesdan really did enjoy it and at points, it really was hearts in mouth.

As for the continuation of Sherlock, my best guess is that there won't be another full three episode run, but maybe a Christmas special every few years and maybe even a double episode here and there.

I'd agree. Had me on the edge of my seat multiple times. I think that could work as the last one, with the two of them dashing into legend, but hopefully we will see them again (say around 2019?)

Also I loved how it riffed on the Sea Devils (with Eurus taking the place of The Master) and that first bit was very Avengers wasn't it? :D

Agree with that... though for me TST still works better than TLD, maybe because I was more invested in the case then than with Smith. OTOH, TLD had more terrific scenes.

And actually I also agree with your assessment about the audience's expectations: Maybe because I hoped that the cliffhanger from season 3 would be dealt with quickly (because if I hate something in this show it's Moriarty), I wasn't disappointed he just appeared kind of like an afterthought. And the other issue about expectation... to me it also happened with Harry Potter and the hiatus between books 4 and 5... and maybe that's the flaw of the internet as well... but when discussing a series or book I kind of develop my own version of the characters which doesn't necessarily correspond with the creators'. So I guess sometimes those versions just clash as it happens here with John even if, on second thought, that development was kind of foreshadowed.

Still have troubles with Mary saving Sherlock, though, after HLV.

Honestly, the 1st half I just spent frowning... but I really enjoyed the second half, especially how Sherlock connected with Euros in the end through empathy and music. Mycroft might be the smart one, Euros the insane genius (and psychopath), but Sherlock is the human one of the Holmes-siblings.

But there are quite a few things that don't make sense, unless everyone was manipulated (including the audience). Why else should Mycroft facilitate a meeting between the arguably most dangerous people in the world? So did that meeting take place the Christmas before the pilot or the year after that, before the Fall? And Moriarty needed some story about Redbeard to know that the way to Sherlock was through his friends? Erm, isn't threatening loved ones the way to make someone dance to your tune anyway?

And why did they/Sherlock play the game? The plane was going to crash anyway, Euros kept changing the rules... why not just sit down and not interact? Why didn't Euros just manipulate Sherlock to do her bidding? Don't quite understand her abilities, and what she actually hoped to achieve - someone to connect with?

And Mary keeps popping up like a bad penny (as did Moriarty before)... definitely didn't need her blessing for John to move in with Sherlock again.

That's the way I see it as well. Sherlock was always supposed to be a story about a detective... well, this story is now over. Unless they begin with a new arc I don't see a proper season 5 on the horizon.

Yes on all points.

I loved it, a satisfying ending in it's own right but leaving the door open for shorter stories down the line, the two of them setting off on more adventures.

And the final shot "Rathbone Place", probably a real location, but possibly doubling as a little shout out to Basil Rathbone at the same time?

And the little Dancing Men complete with it being on the chalkboard.
