Overrated compared to what?Actually you are making my point for me. By your own admission, BSG had a brilliant first season, while SGU needed a season just to get going. And by that time, SG fans like me had stopped watching the show.
Which is more painful: to have a really rubbish first season, then gradually improve into something much more promising, only to be cancelled; or start with a brilliant first season and they gradually squander it, finally becoming a boring mess?

@Deckerd: Not usually. I just really like BSG. It helps that the shitty stuff happened mostly in the middle of its run, so I have fond memories of the show overall thanks to the ending. If you shuffled that all around so season 3 was great but the finale really was crap, I'd probably be singing a different tune.

I agree. BSG was the best sci-fi series of the 00's.
And, not coincidentally, that's when the franchise really started to go down the toilet. In my humble opinion, of course.
Well, seeing the same pine trees for ~5 seasons eventually became pretty boring so I guess some change of scenery was needed. IMO, of course - I liked SG1 for the entire run and I think the last season was actually one of the best.
Cannot say I am suprised. Eventhough I would not call myself a fan, I enjoyed both SG1 and Atlantis for all their cool action, light humor, great SFX and beautiful scores. SGU was so boring from the start. I stopped watching after that lesbian episode in season 1, which was just embarrassing.
And isn't the TARDIS a spaceship, anyway? And they use it to go to other planets and meet aliens!
SG:U in syndication aired "darkness" Rush yelling at everyone is how i'd expect Carlyle to act if he blew up at someone.

Yeah, Doctor Who is an entirely different animal in that regard. The TARDIS as a spaceship or as a "home base" is rarely (at least in the current incarnation; I can't speak to the old serials) used in the same manner that Destiny on SGU was, or an Enterprise/Defiant/Voyager was used on the various Treks.
^^But it wasn't decent drama (at least not in Season 1...I haven't seen Season 2 yet). It was meandering and mopey.

Maybe this is a thread for the general SF/F forum, but there seems to be at least two viable sci fi audiences emerging from the mad chaos of cable TV (forget sci fi on broadcast; Lost was the last of that ilk):
The Eureka audience - wants lightweight, escapist dramady.
The Walking Dead audience - wants powerful, gripping, character-based drama.
My take on it is that neither audience is in it for sci fi, in and of itself, but doesn't see sci fi as an obstacle. The first audience wants lightweight escapist fare and is just as happy to get it from Covert Affairs as Eurkea. The second audience wants powerful, serious drama and is just as happy to get it from Breaking Bad as The Walking Dead.
SG:U didn't delivery Eurkea/Covert Affairs style fluff and didn't come anywhere close to Breaking Bad/The Walking Dead level drama. Successful sci fi in the future needs to appeal to one of those two audiences.
