Actually, what didn't ring true for me was that Young and Rush were the only ones to recuse themselves from the lottery. There are a lot of people there, a number of them older. It's hard to believe there are no "women and children first" types around.
Oh, I believed it.
I didn't.
As RJDemonicus pointed out, there were quite a few older people in the crowd. Not everyone grew up in today's world where everyone is a self-serving, self-entitled, and all around selfish dickweed. Many older people (even today despite that mindset) had the benefit of understanding the concept of sacrificing oneself for the betterment of the group.
Note that despite the unfounded accusations Young made, both Rush and Young understood that concept. At least one or two others should have followed suit, if not more.
I wouldn't expect it from anyone in the younger crowd, though. Me me me me me.
