Now that another 6 months have passed, veteran Stargate actors are becoming less held-back in their criticisms of SGU. At the recent Fedcon 2010 in Germany, Joe Flanigan (SGA's John Sheppard), David Hewlett (Rodney McKay) and Cliff Simon (SG1's most lovable Goa'uld system lord, Ba'al) were each interviewed about their thoughts on the new show.
Flanigan was the most outspoken, stating outright that he doesn't watch Stargate Universe because after turning it on for 15 minutes, his kids said it was "boring" and wanted it turned off. He says that SGU isn't doing very well so far, and he believes this is because the fan base want Atlantis back, that they didn't want Atlantis to have been cancelled in the first place. He adds that the decision to cancel SGA and replace it with SGU isn't looking to have been a smart move, but diplomatically states, with a skeptical look on his face, that maybe in a few years it might prove to have been a good decision.
Hewlett, at first, jokes that he has no interest in watching SGU because as far as he's concerned, the SGU actors are "on his set, eating his sandwiches!" He goes on to say that he isn't watching SGU, mainly because after working on Atlantis for five years the last thing he wants to do is sit down and "watch someone else having all the fun", but that he might consider watching it if McKay were to get a part on it. That, he believes, would make him love it! Hewlett is quick to avoid promoting SGU, stating that he's getting his sci-fi fix from Doctor Who now. Although he laughs and jokes throughout the interview, it's difficult to imagine that there isn't a level of sincerity in those words, particularly as he then goes on to say how much he really misses Atlantis and his fellow cast, who grew as close as family during their time working on the show.
And Cliff Simon states that he has watched some of SGU and "doesn't think the show is that fantastic", suggesting that one thing SGU badly lacks is a good, strong villain to give the show texture. Although he hopes the show "does get popular", he doesn't feel that the show is as good as SG1 and believes that SGU needs to find a great personality to "make the show", as SG1 did with Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O'Neill). Asked if he'd like a role in SGU, he said that he would do so if he could be a villain. In fact, he'd like to appear as Ba'al.
