Spoilers SFA Ships & Tech

I wouldn't consider it bad at all. Different? Sure, why not? It's supposed to be nearly a millennium in the future of the other "comfort zone" Treks. The ships should look different and more advanced.

Grumall-style freighters, I'm looking at you! :shifty:

You are not alone.
Judging by the reaction on various social media platforms I might be the only person in the world who thinks the Athena's design is really cool.

Add me in. I love the design. I can't wait to see more and learn more.
Like - Is the Athena new? Is she the old academy ship retro-fitted? Are the wings functional or just there for beauty/status as the academy ship? I'm fine either way with that, I'm just curious. How big, exactly, IS she?
The wings kind of give me art deco vibes, as do certain areas of the interior. Beautiful ship, beautiful sets.

I like that the middle "feather" lowers into position when the ship goes to warp. Also, where are the seven Shuttlebays!

The Athena is an Academy class starship. This is from the ship's dedication plaque. I had hoped for a more inspired class name than this.

Presuming the Athena is perhaps a one of a kind training platform, the Academy class name seems fine to me. Perhaps we'll learn more as the series goes on. :)

I myself was never too fond of many of the future Disco designs, in no small part because many of their elements don't make a lot of engineering sense to me. That being said, I do think the Athena is very interesting and I'm keeping an open mind.

What happened to the Pathway drive? Why is USS Athena still limited to warp?

It's nearly four years after this thing was supposed to be ready to deploy fleet-wide.
It may have different drive housings to fit into…Vulcan shuttle/warp sled style.

Simple for cadets.

Each season a new housing.

The best question is, does it come equipped with a turbolift funhouse?:rommie:
Well the lift journey seems to take ages, so much so there are benches to sit on in the turbolift which is a first for Trek.

It's probably like Spock's journey through V'Ger every time you go from the bridge to the shuttlebay.

No. The PD is a completely new prototype in 4x01 DSC and "competes" with the spore drive. In 5x01, we learn it had been chosen over the SD; the final season-5 episodes imply that the PD is still in the test phase, as only two ships plus Saru's shuttle are known to be equipped with it.
Seasons 4+5 of Disco are set in 3190-'91; SFA starts in '91, '92 or '94. In any case, fixing all quirks and glitches could take at least a few more years; maybe the show will address it.

It seems they're ignoring a lot of Discovery tech. None of that programmable matter on the controls, it's the same as SNW and Picard.

Programmable matter on consoles is not always visible and stated to be adaptive.

It seems comm badge transporting (which Disco already retconned itself from being by the badge as per the Nemesis prototype to being a conduit for a chipboard system a season later)

What retcon? Where exactly did it happen?

What retcon? Where exactly did it happen?
Very start of Discovery season 3: Book and Michael teleport around the planet with a portable transporter. He doesn't even know where his ship is at this point, and if he was beaming via his ship, going straight inside would skip most of the episode and solved all their problems.

Discovery introduces the tappy-badge beaming, implicitly the same technology. We saw it in Nemesis hundreds of years earlier and it worked. Discovery season four comes along and has the badge tappy systems fail because the Discovery's transporter system was down. Retconned.
