just heard it takes place in the 31 century.

didn't they go out of there way to remove that character from the 31st century? how is this going to work?

You are confusing Starfleet Academy, the show, which takes place in the 31st, with the Section 31/Yeoh movie, which most certainly does not.

Disco S3 makes this a certainty.

There’s, what, nearly eight centuries between Picard’s and Discovery’s third seasons?

I can’t fathom how an eight-century skip could be viewed as invalidating everything in-between. I truly cannot. The Federation could rise and fall three times, and I would not regard the trials and tribble-ations tribulations of generations of fictional individuals in the interim spans as having too abbreviated a positive impact on the wider worlds around them.

I don't understand the "everything in-between is pointless" argument. "There's no stakes!" Of course there are: for the characters. Those are the only stakes there have ever been. Even if DSC never went to the far future, it's not like any of the other shows would ever actually end with the Federation collapsing or the universe imploding, or whatever.

Agreed. It's an absurdist argument to say "It's all meaningless." It's fiction; of course it's meaningless. It's meant to distract at the least, and engage the emotions at the most.

One might as well say that since Kirk blew up the Enterprise in The Search for Spock, all the original series is meaningless.

Kirk blowing up the NCC-1701 no bloody A, B, C or D wouldn't make anything earlier pointless, but the inclusion of Enterprise TV show which I actually like, was pointless.
It's why I hate prequels (mostly) and can't seem to fathom why hollywood can't ever let go of certain eras.
Granted Discovery went to the future but it started 'in the past' thematically, 10 years prior to TOS. That was pointless too.

If you enjoyed it, it has a point.

You and I define pointless very differently. Feels very arbitrary.

Of course Hollywood cant let go of the past. Audience members keep rewarding the behavior. Why would they?

Damn I missed these, sorry!

Maybe I should explain a bit more. Thematically a lot of fans (not all, but many as far as I've seen) wants a sort of linear progression to the Trek timeline.
Going back in time like ENT then DSC+SNW feels as if we already know how the story 'ends'. Lower Decks, Prodigy and then Picard were in the right direction.
Kelvin Timeline could be seen as 'going back' as well but they never utilised it properly as a reset timeline.
So for DSC to jump to the 32nd century and playing around there we will always know The Burn is coming, so whatever stories we see set in a timeline before that kind of will always lead to The Burn or thereafter.
That's what I find pointless.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk!

I hope I explained it better in the quote post above! Thanks! :)

Which I still maintain that makes everything from the 25th Century to the 31st completely pointless.
There are definitely people who would say that about Picard, even if Discovery didn't exist.

Besides, it's individual stories, not one big saga. They all ignore the stuff that doesn't suit them at the exact moment anyway, so the other stuff other than what you're watching now is pretty meaningless.

I can see what you mean, and in fairness, I largely agree with you. For example, there's no real chance of exploring beyond the galactic barrier for over 800 years, which is a bit limiting (barring random episodes with omnipotent beings).

Although saying that, it is contradicted by PIC S2 BTS claim that young Picard and Captain Uhura explored the Large (or Greater) Magellenic Cloud, onboard the USS Leondegrance. That Dwarf Galaxy is a solid 150,000 lightyears away, if its the one we know.

I would like to suggest the possibility that the future that Discovery travelled to is more fluid and mutable due to the nature of the Temporal wars that preceded it. How many futures does the crew of a 25th century ship face with an enormous time war on the horizon? I'd like to think an infinite amount.

I know it probably won't be canonised, but thats how I'd happily give free reign to any series more closely set to the TNG era. The future isn't quite as written as we'd believe.

It really isn't. Otherwise the timeship Relativity would be a boring assignment.
The Kelvin Timeline suggests many possibilities when it comes to time travel and changing time. Even Kovich himself acknowledged many branching timeliness just as legitimate as the one you see in Discovery. Crossing between them is even possible.

Parallels did as well, as well as the mirror universe, Lazarus' universe, the three different Braxtons being combined together, Temporal Wars, among other things.

They could have found a wormhole or some other anomaly that allows far distance travel.

Either way that plaque isn't legible on screen so you can completely ignore it if you want.

True. The idea does seem like something far more screen-worthy than being relegated to a background prop, so maybe an adventure for another crew.
