SNW is the broad appeal show.
DISCO was supposed to be dark & edgy to start, and it kind of was for a bit there.

I could've sworn someone called her a Starfleet commander back at SDCC.Revealed in July at SDCC
That phaser is so TNG.
It's basically a "dustbuster" with a pistol grip. Which is actually kinda perfect for the era.
Ah, but is she a Lieutenant or Lieutenant j.g.??Revealed in July at SDCC
DISCO S1 was definitely trying to model itself after GAME OF THRONES in the sense of being a more mature prestige show, with the sheen of the Kelvin films. It's easy to see why CBS in the 2010s thought that was a winning strategy when it came to attracting a new audience beyond Trek's loyal base. It's kind of wild to look back at that first season in light of what the show ultimately became. Even S2 right from the get go felt like a jolt with its more jovial tonal approach.SNW is the broad appeal show.

You're probably thinking of this interview from SDCC where Omari Hardwick calls Kacey Rohl a "Starfleet Commander" which one particularly ignorant poster interpreted as meaning Garrett's rank in the movie actually was Commander. However, I don't actually remember anything at SDCC claiming she was a Lieutenant, this appears to be the first mention of her holding that rank I'm aware of.I could've sworn someone called her a Starfleet commander back at SDCC.
Maybe they'll split the difference and she'll be a Lieutenant Commander. You're probably thinking of this interview from SDCC where Omari Hardwick calls Kacey Rohl a "Starfleet Commander" which one particularly ignorant poster interpreted as meaning Garrett's rank in the movie actually was Commander. Which could suggest this movie is set even earlier than a dozen years or so prior the the loss of the Enterprise C we were all assuming based on Kacey Rohl's current age and Tricia O'Neill's age when Yesterday's Enterprise was made.
Alison Pill’s gorgeous red dress from Picard season two would beg to differ. As would “Princess Thalia’s” (aka La’an’s) revealing gown from Strange New World’s “The Elysian Kingdom”.
Plus, I recall several people swooning over Tendi’s animated curves in Lower Decks’ “Crisis Point” and noting her boob window dress in “Parth Ferengi's Heart Place”.
In my mind there’s nothing inherently “sexploitive” about putting characters of all sexes into sexy costumes, as long as it’s in service of the plot and fits the characters (no pun intended). That said, I would be the first to cry foul if Melle’s roll in this turns out to be nothing more than mere eye-candy to show how “sexy and edgy” they are.
Okay, I didn’t know that they’d have to count as “titillating”, I was merely listing examples that refreshed your memory as to the appearance of cleavage in Discovery, Picard and Strange New Worlds (which was what you were referring to in the post I was responding to). Wasn’t trying to say those were examples of “sexploitation” in Modern Trek.I had forgotten about these, but I don't think either counts as even titillating, given the construction of the scenes.
I think the use of “normally” is a little odd here, because there’s nothing particularly “abnormal” about revealing or titillating clothing. But it's important to note we saw Deltans in Picard Season 2 briefly, and they dressed normally.
It was definitely a deliberate production choice, sure. And in terms of marketing I also don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to assume that this costume was chosen for Melle because it emphasizes that at least visually this will be a “sexy” and “adult” Trek movie. It remains to be seen if watching the movie there will be a sense that the choice of clothing is rooted in the character and her background, as you say. This outfit is made to make us notice the character's sideboob. Hopefully, that decision is rooted in the character too, but it was a deliberate production choice, regardless.
Looks brilliant. I especially like the less itchy-looking undershirt. Here’s a quick and dirty Photoshop job based on one of the new photos released of Garrett, meant to jog the imagination of what she would look like in the SNW maroon uniform …
Doesn’t look totally out of place, I would say.

Beautiful! You also fixed the droopy front flap and strap - the one real flaw in this upgraded design that I could see when it first appeared.
