Season 1 Blu-ray but no UHD :(

Up to “The Eylsian Kingdom” in the 4K version and wow, the show looks incredible! So much better than on streaming. I hope the sales have been good enough to ensure future seasons get the same 4K treatment.
Watching the episodes in Blu Ray at my father house I couldn't believe the difference. It was a huge step up from streaming. I can't wait to see what 4K looks like.

Frankly all the new Trek shows should be released in 4K. I'm sure fans of Discovery and Picard would buy them up. There is just no comparison between home video and streaming when it comes to picture quality.

I mean this in the nicest possible... People like your parents don't matter anymore to large corporate media companies. They would rather pretend people like that didn't exist.

They want you plugged into a montly subscription, where you're likely to keep paying, month after month, regardless of the content. Selling a few thousand DVD's is miniscule compared to what they make streaming to millions. It's hardly worth the effort.

It's the same across most media. New cars don't even come with CD Players anymore. Why? Everyone has Spotify or Apple music. Physical media might not be dead, but it's dying.

I personally resent being described as not a part of "Everyone".

I can only assume that Paramount has figured out by now that Trekkies will buy any show or movie in any format they sell. They know we’re hooked.

It's just a niche market now, aimed at collectors and movie nuts. They still sell vinyl records because there is a market for it and there is a small but dedicated customer base. That seems to be the direction that home media is headed, especially with companies like Shout Factory and Arrow which just re-releases older movies on 4k and Blu-Ray with a ton of features and excellent transfers.

Sat down to start watching my discs yesterday. I enjoyed the first episode so much, I watched the second. And then the third. And so on... So I binged the whole season. I think I liked it even more than I did when I first saw it streaming. I mean, obviously the video quality was better, but everything from the casting to the interesting storylines was so great that I just had a great time.

So, of course I had to watch the first episode of season 2 immediately after all that. The drop in video quality was... stark! I always new the discs would be better, but I honestly wouldn't have expected the difference to be quite *that* obvious.

The episode itself was, unfortunately, the weakest one so far in my opinion (for reasons I won't go into), and I really, really hope they don't get sidetracked into a whole "war arc" for the season rather than the wonderful, more episodic and *exploratory* episodes they did in the first season.

They won't.

Season 1 had a few arcs across episodes like Una hiding her true species, M'Benga's daughter, Pike dealing with his future, and the Spock/Chapel/T'Pring love triangle. Season 2 will probably do something similar with the Gorn, something that really started in season 1.

Yeah, I just don't want another arc where all the episodes in it are dark and focused on a war and pretty much nothing else. TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DSC... they all did that, and I hope SNW doesn't follow in their footsteps.

A brief glance at the episode list seems to indicate it will probably not do that.

Klingons hopefully one and fuck off.

So, I almost forgot about this until now.... Thankfully a third-party seller on Amazon has more steelbooks, going for $47.97. I'm not sure how that compares with the original retail price, but seems well worth it to me for a whole season in 4K/UHD on steelbook. So I've placed my order.

Based off season 1, I don't think they will. I think they like having a variety of storytelling options.

The Gorn seem to just be the series' actual Big Bad.

I don't recall TNG ever doing a long dark arc focused on war. The show was the most risk free and play it safe of all them. And Voyager had the year of hell two parter but nothing else beyond that. Rick Berman never allowed it because he said Gene Rodenberry didnt like stories focused on war. DS9 was the first of the Trek shows to break the mold and have long arcs on war. And IMO, did it better than the rest.

I don't think SNW will go that route. The current format seems pretty popular with fans. So I dont forsee a dominion arc or Xindi season like in the past. I think it will be more like how the Borg were handled in TNG: A threat that you know is there, won't be discussed in every episode, but when they do appear will be a true menace.
