Scotty has been cast! And now Sulu too!

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Although I was hoping for Paul McGillion, Simon Pegg is an excellent choice. This might actually be the first bit of info from this movie that excites me.

For some reason which eludes me, I think I like Simon Pegg for Scotty. He won't be Jimmy Doohan, but I think he'll be good. Cho is also an actor with greater range than people give him due credit.

Simon Pegg is a good actor, but he's just not Scotty.
Total miscasting.

See after spending months saying Daniel Craig would make a lousy Bond before I even saw Casino Royale I've learned to be far more careful when it comes to making judgements :)

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Wow.. totally wow on both of them! I cant wait!

I hope they do put Engineers in red, Shaun needs his Red on Him!

If you're not judgmental and dismissive of anyone who thinks differently than you, then you don't belong on the internet.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I'm not familiar with Simon Pegg. John Cho I remember from American Pie and Wedding and Harold and Kumar.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

If you want to know anything about Simon Pegg... just watch ANYTHING from BBC in the past few years... he's one of their most used actor/narrator/whatevers, lately.

For instance... he did all the narrations for the Doctor Who DVD sets, and also appeared in one storyline, initially played as the villain (but later illustrated to be just a flunky).

He plays very different characters in "Sean of the Dead" and in "Hot Fuzz" but both movies have the same sort of feel... utterly deadpan slapstick.

He was the "techey" guy in Mission Impossible III as well.

I like the guy... really. But I simply can't see him as Scotty. This is not to say that I won't like the movie, or that I won't like him IN the movie. But it DOES say that they've got an uphill battle if they're going to make anyone in the audience think that they're seeing the character that so many people know so well... and they'll be fighting a predisposition of the audience to ASSUME that he'll be there for comic relief, even if he's not.

The really sad part is that there was a really fantastic choice... not a "favorite" of mine like Pegg is but far better, IMHO, of a fit for Scotty than anyone else I'd seen.

I guess I just have to look forward to seeing how well Simon can handle this. I'll try to keep an open mind, but I suddenly find myself cynical again. :\

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I'm going to reserve my judgement on Simon Pegg as Scotty, until after I see the movie. After all I was horrified to hear Micheal Keaton as Batman, all I had stuck in my head was Beetlejuice. But he was the best damn Batman that series ever had!

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I dunno why, but I can totally see Pegg being an awesome Scotty in the new movie. It seems like Abrams and the crew are really dedicated to making this movie good, so like many others, I am going to reserve judgment until I see the film. But as of now I am going to say that Pegg has my stamp of approval

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Pegg can probably do a great accent, but I cannot for the life of me see him as Scotty, insofar as how I forsee him comparing with James Doohan's portrayal. Maybe that's the problem...we're focusing too much on hoe Scotty was BEFORE. But still...ewwww. McGillion would've been my choice.

With the casting of the comedian actors, perhaps the new movie is taking a turn like the comic goof, Sev Trek, has taken.
That's a silly stance to take. Many comedian actors have gone to become great dramatic actors because comedy is much harder to do well than drama. Look at Jim Carrey and Robin Williams. Hell, I use to hate Jim Carrey, but he's done some wonderful dramatic films in recent time.

OH...

MY...

GOD...

Okay, let's be honest, I LOVE "Sean of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz." I've seen this guy in lots of stuff and always liked him.

But he's NOT Scotty.

The website that put that up... never heard of 'em... wonder what their "source" is...?

Right, and as it's been often said Jackman was "no Wolverine."

Wain until you see his mannerisms and his role in-costume before you judge.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Did anyone read Jimmy Doohan's son's comments on the choice of Scotty. It's so passive aggressive:

Well, that came out of left field. I guess he pegged the audition. I must say that even though Paul McGillion was my first choice, I believe that Pegg will do a great job. No, he doesn’t look like my Father and he has a little less hair then Scotty did, but his accent is passable and he’s a great actor. I send my congratulations to you Simon and I hope you “giver all you got laddie”.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

God damn! I get on the internet to book a hotel room for Sunday, and I find that Simon fucking Pegg is Scotty! I am now officially excited about this movie! :D

Yeah, well, that just goes to show you he's just as much out of the loop as we all are.

Pegg doesn't have the uncanny look-alike appearance like McGillon does but I trust in Pegg's acting ability so much more and you know as a fellow sci-fi fan himself he'll put every bit of his wonderful creative energy into this as any of his other projects. And probably something quite unique too.

McGillon, having watched him on Stargate, seems so cookie-cutter typical actor-ish in comparison.

"Have you always wanted to be a Starfleet-Man?

"Officer..."

"Have you always wanted to be a Starfleet-man officer??"

What are the chances of a cameo from Nick Frost as Scotty's dumbass assistant??

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Dunno the other guy but Pegg must be over the moon, him being a fan and all! :D

Re: Scotty has been cast!

^ Bogus frat! Pegg always seemed much more the obsessive Jedi anorak. But if you're offered a job on a film with "Star" in the title, it's close enough... :p

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I was excited about this movie until I read that Paul McGillion didn't get the job. I upset, but I'll get over it when the trailers start coming out next summer.

I'm going to look up Pegg to see what he looks like.
