Scotty has been cast! And now Sulu too!

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Both are great choices, and that's just based on their acting ability. I don't care if an actor doesn't look like their counterpart did FORTY YEARS AGO. If an actor is good, the role will probably be reinvented and awesome.

Pegg is fantastic in his films. For evidence that Cho has the goods check out Better Luck Tomorrow. Fantastic movie.

I'm hoping that casting actors with this much talent means they all will have pretty juicy roles, or at least a really cool hero moment. That's what I liked about M:I-III is that Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Maggie Q got a bit of screentime for being minor characters.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I said this in the other thread but I say a jj abrams alumni lost star, Daniel dae kim who plays Jin would make a better sulu despite his age

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Now now, according to Wikipedia (so I only 1/3 believe it.) Daniel dae kim is only 4 years older than John Cho.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Seeing as Pegg was in MI:3, we can only hope that this paves the way for Tom Cruise to be in our beloved movie.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Well I haven't seen Pegg in anything that I can think of but I know of him. So I have no comment on him.
Cho I've seen before and visually I can see him as Sulu.

Now I know they are both prone to comedy so I hope they can do serious. I mean unless this movie is going to be a parody of Trek. Not all comdey actors can do drama and vice versa. Hoping for the best.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I like both actors, and John Cho WAS Off Centre for me, however with these two castings, its taking a comedic turn which is slightly worrying, less so in Peggs case.

that said I always figured some of the Enterprise crew just had small roles in the movie, maybe nothing more than a nod to there characters.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Finally some casting news. I think John Cho as Sulu is great but don't know that much about Simon Pegg works. I guess i am going to be re-watching MI3 again to judge if he can really fill Scotty part.

we can only hope that this paves the way for Tom Cruise to be in our beloved movie
Yes please, Tom Cruise for Pike .

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Must admit, despite the MI:3 connection, I would never have seen the Pegg thing coming. And although he is a self-confessed geek, I've heard him talk loads about Star Wars and Dr Who (in which he appeared) but never Trek. Must dig out my Spaced DVD set and check for references.

Although he's primarily a comic actor and English rather than Scottish (which is still closer than being Canadian, as Doohan was), I think this could work. He has the talent to do straight acting. I just hope that Abrams isn't tempted to make Scotty a comic role, as he was in STV:TFF or as Pegg's role in MI:3 was (come to think of it, he was sort of an engineer in that!).

As for Cho, don't know a lot about him, but am happy enough that he looks like a young Takei and I'm assuming that he gave a good audition.

The cast is shaping up nicely - can't wait to see if Pine lands the Kirk role and who will be Bones.

My guess is that this casting shows that Scotty will be used to comedic effect unless he plays it seriously.

And here we have the most noncommital sentence in the history of this forum.

^Agreed.

But I definitely don't see him playing James Doohan.

Well, he's playing a younger Montgomery Scott, so you get your wish. Nobody could pull off an impression of Doohan for an entire movie.

Simon Pegg is awesome. I can't wait.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Simon Pegg has done some other stuff besides comedy. He played "The Editor" villain in "Doctor Who."

Re: Scotty has been cast!

hey, somebody I've actually heard of!

Sorry the other guy lost out for scotty, but Pegg is a good actor...Cho, I don't know from.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I think Pegg might actually do a wonderful job! He seems to have a knack for respecting the medium he is working in. His respect for Romero's work made Shaun of the Dead the best zombie movie in years! I do have to admit his name is NOT one that i thought of for the role of Scotty ...but who knows? He might be very good at it!

Cho seems to have the right look for Sulu.

In fact my only concern is the role of Pike so far! I would hate to see Cruise get it. I just don't personally like him for the role. My first actual thought when I heard Bana was cast was Wow! they got the right look for a young Pike...

Now I hear he is a villain named Nero? I think?

I would've liked to seen him as Pike

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I don't really mind Cho as Sulu, it's just I've only seen him in one thing (Harold & Kumar), so I wasn't sure if he'd be able to do drama. But like I mentioned earlier, most people consider comedy to be more difficult than drama, and someone said he did well in a guest spot on House, so I'm certainly willing to give this guy a chance. He is a bit old (he looks nothing like 35 :wtf:), but that's not that big a deal.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Well hearing that Simon Pegg has been cast as Scotty has definitely raised my interest in this movie. I'm also thinking that they'll give Scotty a more comedic role in this movie, but considering that it will be Simon, he'll probably act serious (which is always better for comedy.)

Re: Scotty has been cast!

I was pulling for McGillion but will have to see since I've never seen Pegg act. Still, whoo hoo the gangs almost all here!! :bolian:

Wow, what a week. Casting news has been few and far between -- but just this week we get three reported and confirmed signings. Good times.

As for the Scotty and Sulu actors, I like both guys. I really think it's great that even for smaller roles, Abrams is getting some guys that are fairly well-known.

Personally, I would've thought that Simon Pegg would be almost too big of name to play Scotty. I mean, with his film career being fairly hot right now, I would've thought he'd be out doing stuff centered around him, no? But I guess he just couldn't resist playing a legend. Can you blame him? I definitely think he can nail the accent. And dye his hair the same color as Doohan's, I think you solve any cosmetic problems pretty easily too. I'm excited though. He's definitely the wildcard of the cast. I really think he could be a scene-stealer.

As for Cho, people are also fairly aware of him. Having played the title character Harold in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle -- a movie that certainly got his face out there -- I think he'll be pretty recognizable to a lot of people, even if it's in the vein of "I know his face, I just forget which movie he was in." And he also has a nice resemblance to George Takei (at least as much as anybody else we've seen) so that works out pretty well, too.

I repeat: What a week. I know it's early... but I'm getting legitimately excited.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

Simon Pegg is a good actor, but he's just not Scotty.
Total miscasting.

Okay, Simon Pegg is awesome. I love Shaun of the Dead, his role in M:I3 was fun, and I really want to see Hot Fuzz. BUT...I really can't see him as Scotty. At all.

As for John Cho -- well, the only thing I've seen him in is American Pie, so that's not a whole lot to go on, is it?

Well, as long as the don't throw in bandcamp scenes we'll be fine.
I <3 American Pie though. good stuff.

Re: Scotty has been cast!

With the casting of the comedian actors, perhaps the new movie is taking a turn like the comic goof, Sev Trek, has taken.
