Scenes that make you cringe....

Honestly, I reached a point in my viewing experience that if I watched one more Klingon discourse on honor my eyeballs would implode. It began on TNG and carried over into DS9.

But Ezri putting the smack down on the Klingon Empire was great!

FWIW, I always read Janeway's evaluation of Kirk as more amused quasi-admiration than any sort of contempt. Especially considering her own freewheeling command style in later seasons, she certainly didn't have any sort of moral high ground, and she doesn't seem to have an actual problem with his style, just that the times have changed.

Yeah, if I had to name what I think is the single most cringeworthy scene in all of Star Trek, it would be the campfire sing-along in Star Trek V.
*shudder*

There's plenty of other bad or awkward scenes in the franchise, but that one is the worst in my book.

What??? I love that scene.

If we’re talking about ST:V, I’d go with Scotty’s “I know this ship like the back of my hand….THUD”. That was pretty bad.

I love that scene.
That's the great thing about opinions. You are allowed to have one that's objectively wrong.
(don't worry, just joking ;))

But seriously, I just can't stand that scene. I also think "row your boat" is one of the worst songs in existence. So three characters, two of which I don't like (McCoy and Kirk) singing that unholy "song" badly isn't exactly my kind of thing.
I can't even really think about it without my stomach turning a little.

If you want some other explanation...I'm gay and non-binary, so I frequently have difficulties understanding manly-man bonding. I'm also a millennial and European so the scene might be too old-fashioned and/or American for me to understand the appeal of it.
And yes, this makes me a quadruple-communist, possible more.

It’s super cheesy but I like the “row your boat” sing alongs.

Shatner really did the Kirk/Spock/Bones friendship stuff well. It’s the best it had been since TOS.

Ezri pointing out to Worf the issues with the Empire is easily her best, most worthwhile contribution to S7.

the first time I saw Janeway’s critique of Kirk, Bones, etc…I thought it was slamming them but the more I’ve watched the episode it’s just furthering her point about how different Starfleet was 75 years earlier. “Romulans hiding behind every nebula, no replicators”, etc. And then she says she wouldn’t mind ”riding shotgun with a group of officers like that”.

I'm not really into outdoors, but I completely understand the bonding aspect here.

STV had a lot of flaws, but one thing they nailed completely was the trio.

Cringe moments: About 90 min from Star Trek Insurrection-
  • "A British Tar"
  • "Have you noticed your boobs"
  • Manual Steering Column
  • Everything between Data and the kid
  • F. Murray Abraham
  • The camera slowly panning from face to face of the Enterprise crew while they stare-down the drones (absolutely ridiculous)
  • Picard dancing in his quarters
  • Worf's purple space bazooka
  • Anij swooning over Picard awkwardly
  • Zit jokes
OMG what a mess.

More like "discount store Kirk" ;)

This sounds like a discount store insult . . . and sexist to boot. In fact, a lot of the comments on this thread is all about bashing Janeway. And many still claim that only Star Wars fans are toxic?

I think this thread has seen a very wide variety of responses, with many "cringe" moments put forward over several series/movies and many characters. Some are the obvious ones - some less so and the latter in particular can often be interesting to think about. I've read through the thread again and in my opinion I do not believe that Janeway has been particularly picked upon in this thread. Indeed, several posts disagree with the "cringe" label put forward concerning her assessment of Kirk (I felt she had a lot of respect for Kirk - I didn't think it was cringey). I hope this fun thread does not get sidetracked.

I'm going to say this as clearly and as respectfully as possible: Accusing me of being sexist because I don’t particularly like a female character is the height of irresponsible behavior, and I’m pretty disgusted that you’d draw such an immediate conclusion and make such a serious accusation based on what was essentially a harmless comment made for fun that I had every right to make.

If you go back through my post history I believe you’ll find that there are plenty of female Star Trek characters that are amongst my favorites, including Kira Nerys, Michael Burnham, and Deanna Troi. There are also several I don’t appreciate, including Beverly Crusher and at times yes, Kathryn Janeway. If you disagree, there is a much better and more constructive way to debate it than accusing me of bigotry.

Really not cool….and I can’t even believe I’ve had to waste time trying to defend myself to you, quite frankly.

This scene didn't bother me very much. It seems to be recognized by all involved that the campfire sing-along ritual is a silly and painful necessity.

Now, the rest of the film is such crap that it seems gratuitous to object to this scene.

Always felt Jadzia's last words were cringeworthy :

our baby .... would have been so beautiful

I mean, surely it's a dramatic moment but this feels like a hollow attempt to milk it for what it's worth.

Okay, let's move on from interpreting each others' motives and get back to the subject please.
