Sarek, played by James Frain

In other words, there's no difference.

They're the same guy.
Same character, at least. In the same way Supergirl's Superman is the same as the guy in Batman V Superman, or Gotham's Bruce Wayne is the same guy putting together the Justice League.

I just finished reading Asimov's The End of Eternity, so I think of them as alternate reality analogues of the same person. That terminology just works for me.

Now in all this time we haven't heard anything yet about the captain of the Discovery. is it possible that Rainsford, Saru, and Stamets will be the only true leads and everyone else just guest stars?

Why Sarek again? why not other Vulcan? It seems that only Sarek is the most competent to solve Federation problems.
In my opinion, Soval, for example, was as important as Sarek.
James Frain will be the second actor to play the ambassador.

We've already more Soval than we have had Sarek, so I think it's nice to go back to that Classic character again. Besides, who says we won't see Soval too at some point?

His resemblance to Mark Lenard is incredibly uncanny, much more so than Ben Cross. I hope he also has the gravitas Lenard has, that Cross didn’t seem to have as much. Maybe Winona Ryder can still play Amanda.

It’s too bad the show got delayed again, but I guess it means I’ll be signing up for All Access later.

What's the difference between Prime Spock and Kelvin Spock, again?

Oh, yeah - one's played by Leonard Nimoy and one by Zachary Quinto.

When they get around to bringing Spock on as an occasional character, which of the above actors do you suppose will play him?

Probably a third actor - maybe Tyler Hoechlin.

Actually, I can see DISCOVERY trying to cast Quinto or Urban in their respective roles as a "ratings sweep" coup. "On this special episode of DISCOVERY, Zachary Quinto stars as Mr. Spock" or "Karl Urban as Dr. Bones McCoy on the next episode of DISCOVER".

Regrading the timeline designations of Prime and Kelvin:

Let's be honest, those don't really matter at all. It's just all lip service.

And DISCOVERY is a reboot of a kind anyway despite what the producers say about Prime this or that.

This seems like good news. He was on True Blood and Agent Carter, and he physically looks right for the role of Sarek. I don't like recasting at all, so I'm glad they cared enough to find an actor who is physically right for the part.

Wiki lists him as a guest, not a regular. I'm guessing that means he'll be our premiere episode link to the Trekverse. That's cool, but I was really hoping for somebody from Enterprise.

I have no idea, why Wikipedia lists him as a guest. They link there to the Entertainment Weekly article, which says this:

http://ew.com/tv/2017/01/18/star-trek-discovery-spock-premiere-date/

"The first is that the series will include Spock’s father Sarek as a key character."

Key character doesn't sound like a guest at all. So I am not so sure, if Wiki is right in that point.

Yeah, there's a good chance that they will.

Exactly so.

That's good news. He'll make a fine Sarek I think.

That sucks! Why the heck did CBS fire Fuller for then? According to some he was the one responsible for the previous delay. I'll bet they'll blame him again!
I thought Fuller chose to leave because he got to a point where he could do either Disovery or American Gods, and he chose AG because he had more freedom to do his own thing?
I like Frain as a character actor, but he definitely leans toward the creepy end of the spectrum. Would much rather him as a Romulan.
Ben Cross was awesome in his day but is too old now. He could play Sarek's dad perhaps.
I've only ever seen Frain as bad guys, so I was a little surprised to see him as a good guy here.

He was supposed to be a pretty important Ambassador at this point, and we know that a big focus will be the political situation with the Klingons, so it makes sense we'd see Sarek. He's also a good choice for a preexisting character, because he's fairly well known since he's Spock's father, but he also didn't get much development, so they have a fair amount freedom in what they can do with him.
