Sarek, played by James Frain

I doubt it's so much that they left the announcement to EW as it leaked to EW and they announced Frain as Sarak to try and distract from the delay with positive news.

It used to be that the star's popularity and prior work was important in getting a show off the ground...

This switch has a few reasons behind it, a key one is that recently cast star Sonequa Martin-Green is on AMC’s mega-hit The Walking Dead, which is airing its current season through April. There’s a concern about marketplace confusion if CBS were to ramp up promoting her as the star of a new sci-fi show while her horror hit is currently on the air.----------

At this point, I'm starting to not care whether Discovery ever makes it to air or not.

I too was expecting a push back from May with shooting just starting. I'd rather have it good versus fast. I like the casting news. Can't wait to see a proper trailer.

I don't know the actor, but he's a hell of a better fit for Sarek than Ben Cross (from Star Trek 09) was!!

I don't know how I feel about casting Sarek. We all knew something like that would happen, with the series being set ~10 years prior to TOS. And I much prefer such secondary links than outright casting a young Lt. Kirk (although - with Rogue One in cinemas - how long until that happens...?). Sarek is actually far enough away from the TOS-cast to be distracting, but close enough that we fans know the connection.

We shall see..

Anyway. Still not a fan of prequels. But (with that little draw-back), they seem to hit their marks with casting...

I've seen him in Orphan Black. I wouldn't have expected him to play Sarek based on the kind of bastard with a sado-maso fetish he was playing there.
But interesting choice.

Frain has been on a ton of shows I watch, includuing The Tudors, 24, True Blood, Fringe, Burn Notice, Leverage, Sleepy Hollow, Grimm and Gotham, so needless to say, I'm pretty familiar with him. I liked him in pretty all of those, so I look forward to seeing him on Discovery.
I thought news seemed to be coming pretty slow, so I'm not surprised Discovery has been pushed back again.

Interesting, that they added Sarek. I am sure Amanda will follow. They are married at this time. And if they add those two, I fully expect guest appearances from a young Spock. And when they have already three TOS characters appear in the series, there might follow more.

I am annoyed though about another delay. That is just crap and what stupid reasons for it. I don't watch The Walking Dead, but from what I read, Martin-Green is nowhere close to a lead. She doesn't even appear in most episodes of the current season. She is not the face of The Walking Dead. And for the other reason given, those "careful deliberation" should have been done ages ago. They have more than enough time already to plan everything.

CG Twilight Zone Shatner

I would have liked to see Cross in the role, as a neat link with the films, but either way it's interesting to see Sarek.

The further delay is a concern. It's not a great look for the show to have been pushed back twice.

Small universe?? Hell no. Big shit blowing with the Klingons, UFP needs their top notch Ambie at the job. Meaning Sarek. That's not small universe, that's logical. Now, if Spock came along to some sort of meeting, where a young Lieutenant Kirk also happens to show up..... THAT's small universe.
think its inevitable at some point Discovery will tie in with The Cage/WNMHGB 'Rogue One' style.. and we'll witness CG Hunter Pike handing over the keys to CG 'Where No Man' Shatner as CG Nimoy looks on..

Meh. With it being prime universe I never wanted recasting. Mind you, he does resemble the actor who played Sarek in Trek V somewhat.

If so they will have to keep in mind the line from Amanda in journey to Babel: "It has kept Spock and Sarek from speaking as father and son for eighteen years".
The statement is actually quite convenient, as it proves that Spock and Sarek have had some professional dealings with each other since Spock joined Starfleet. They just can't acknowledge each other as family.

This is the first bit of truly bad news on Discovery for me. I've seen a lot of his previous work, and have never enjoyed any of his performances. He's one of those actors where I understand the consensus is that he's good, and a lot of people whose taste I respect like him... but he's just not for me, I never like what he's doing or the choices he's making.

That being said, actors can surprise you when they get a role that lets them show a different side of themselves, so I'm keeping an open mind. Or even if I dislike him here as much as I've disliked him all previous times I've seen him act, that could still be OK. I can handle a weak-link castmember or two.

New cast announcement from StarTrek.com.

Sarek will be in the show! Played by a gentleman named James Frain (I'm unfamiliar with him). I'm pretty excited to see Sarek again.

That's good news. He'll make a fine Sarek I think.

Also some bad news that will surely upset people. EW is reporting that DSC's premiere date got pushed back again. No official word on a new date. They're speculating the fall. I'm not going to freak out over this just yet, but at this point, shit why not just bring back Fuller then?

That sucks! Why the heck did CBS fire Fuller for then? According to some he was the one responsible for the previous delay. I'll bet they'll blame him again!

Bringing Fuller back in to lead the show would push out the people who stepped up to replace him. That could be seen as unfair. But hey, if Kirk can do it in TMP, then why not Fuller?
