From Ncuti's interview in Vogue where the above photo came from.
“Months after getting the role, I went to see the producers and get the scripts, and they asked me my thoughts on the show’s costumes. I was talking about Ralph Lauren’s collaboration with Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, two historically Black colleges, which is really preppy. They were like, ‘Cool, but it’s quite traditional.’ I guess I was thinking about catering to the audience that already watches Doctor Who, but they’re like, ‘Let’s push it forward.’ They’re really keen on progress, and it doesn’t always feel like that in the landscape of British television.”
I'd personally say that not wanting to play it safe and actually doing something different was a good thing, but that's just me.
How dare different people have different opinions.Once again, I'm going to express my amusement over the fact that throughout the years I've always seen everyone whine about "modern Doctors treat their outfits like a uniform. Go back to the classic era when the Doctor was willing to change his clothes." Now Gatwa does seem to be changing clothes frequently and everyone is all "the Doctor is supposed to have a uniform look!"
Ah, fandom. Never change.
Not really.
Every Doctor up to this point has had an iconic singular look that defines who they are; Ncuti seemingly doesn't, and @jaime is therefore justified in being concerned about such a dramatic shift in costuming approach.

Can you clarify Capaldi's iconic singular look?
The Twelfth Doctor's general outfit consists of a navy blue Crombie coat with a crimson lining, dark blue trousers, a long collared white shirt buttoned to the top, a black cardigan or waistcoat, and brogue boots
Same.I know I'm in the minority but I love Jodie's look and I probably always will.
So iconic you had to look it up on Wikipedia? Doesn't seem very iconic if you couldn't remember it without looking it up.From Wikipedia:
Same.

Might be why you didn’t realise he doesn’t actually wear that outfit often or for very long. And describing it as iconic is a XL misnomer.I've seen exactly three episodes featuring the Twelfth Doctor, which is why I cited Wikipedia for an accurate description of his general 'iconic' look ('iconic' in this instance being a synonym for 'distinctly identifying, not 'instantly memorable').
You should fix that.I've seen exactly three episodes featuring the Twelfth Doctor

No one thinks the sky is falling (writes three page essay about how the sky is falling)
And yet that didn't stop you from commenting on it when you could've simply said "Sorry, I haven't watched enough and therefore I'm not the best person to comment on this."I've seen exactly three episodes featuring the Twelfth Doctor, which is why I cited Wikipedia for an accurate description of his general 'iconic' look ('iconic' in this instance being a synonym for 'distinctly identifying, not 'instantly memorable').

This relates just to series 8 and 9, you'll note the last time the 12th doctor's 'iconic look' was seen was in Before the Flood, episode 4 of Capaldi's second season, The 'iconic look' didn't even make it to halfway through his tenure. This link is the top five also, 'cos there were others.
Series 10 featured several other looks as well.
But, you know, you've seen three episodes of Capaldi's era and you've researched using Wikipedia so what do I know?![]()
I have a hunch this might be RTD's favorite attire yet!Final costume for Series 14 revealed! Everyone happy now? (Is that an Auton he's sitting on?)
