UNIT is roughly the same age as SHIELD, so hard to say which came first…
Not really.
SHIELD debuted in August 1965.
UNIT debuted in November 1968.

Whether or not Derrick Sherwin had heard of SHIELD is ultimately irrelevant, because UNIT really doesn't have much of anything in common with it.

I mean, they're both nominally international (but really dominated by the nation of their franchise's publication) paramilitary organizations specializing in fantastical threats as supporting plot devices for the main characters in sci-fi adventure stories, they both have silly elaborate names used to rationalize referring to them by initialisms, and they both operate flying aircraft carriers.
But aside from all that, absolutely nothing in common.I mean, they're both nominally international (but really dominated by the nation of their franchise's publication) paramilitary organizations specializing in fantastical threats as supporting plot devices for the main characters in sci-fi adventure stories, they both have silly elaborate names used to rationalize referring to them by initialisms, and they both operate flying aircraft carriers.
Sounds like someone needs to remind them the best Doctor Who spin-off is a female led one.Amusingly, those right-wing arseholes who somehow think they're DW fans are not happy with the thought of a female-led spin-off.

Can't wait for them realise that it will also star a woman in a wheelchair and, if rumours are to be believed, a certain former Companion recently returned to the UK after years on American TV, who happens to be a black woman.
The horror! The horror!![]()

Guessing that certain former companion will have no doubt divorced her husband or been widowed off screen![]()
Or they could recast. No reason Mickey can't be a viable character just because his former actor turns out to have been a monster.
Meh, I don't think we need Rickey...
As demonstrated by the new companion Ruby, whose actress has been barely alive when Rose first hit the screens!Just a reminder; as of today it's now eighteen years since Doctor Who returned.*
Just imagine. A world before President Trump. Before Tik-Tok or Instagram or Twitter. Before iPhones or Smartphones. Before Twitter. Hell, a world where YouTube barely existed.
God I wish I has a real TARDIS. I'd go back there in a heartbeat.
*Can people stop calling it "New" or even worse "Nu" Who now?
I remember back in 2005 when people still called what we now call "Berman era Star Trek" "Modern Star Trek." Basically everything from the start of TNG through to the end of Enterprise was called the "modern era." I remember the popular joke many made at the time. "You know Star Trek fans are out of touch when they consider something from 1987 to be 'modern.'"*Can people stop calling it "New" or even worse "Nu" Who now?
