I have mixed feelings. I think he would have made a good doctor before IT Crowd, but I just see him as Moss now. He has a distinctive voice and really stood out in Soul and Mandalorian. He's also the face of a major bank's marketing campaign and does a lot of comedy game shows. He's actually on TV quite a lot.

You forgot the wonderful Travel Man, which he's just stood down from.

He'd no doubt cut down on the game shows and wouldn't be overexposed.

Despite the popularity of the choice of Ayoade, I can't say I get it. He's a very funny comedian and presenter (Travel Man is brilliant) and good at a certain narrow range of comic acting roles, but I'm not sure he has the dramatic abilities for the Doctor. I'm not up to date with the Mandalorian so I haven't seen him in that, but his part on Soul was another one in his standard repertoire.

Yeah i would be happy to check out the show again with Whittaker if it were Chibnall going, but at this point of a 3 year plus hiatus of not watching it i may as well just wait for a whole new show runner and doctor and start from afresh. ha

But on the choice of a new Doctor instead of Ayoade how about Katherine Parkinson who played Jen, she would be quite good with comp uters. lol

I'm frustrated that people are talking about Jodie's replacement when there is zero evidence that her tenure is over.

He voices a droid, so you won't see him. ;)

People chatting about it won't have any impact on it either way, just people chatting, nothing more. :)

To be fair, the speculation about the next next Doctor always start at the latest with the official announcement of a new Doctor.

Then leave fandom like you threatened to earlier. We have a right to discuss whatever we want to discuss, and you have no right telling us not to discuss a certain subject

And there isn't zero evidence Whittaker's term is ending. Even if you ignore all this stuff about what is or isn't said in interviews or BBC's refusal to comment, the fact of the matter remains that Whittaker is in her third and final contracted season, meaning there is a very real possibility that there will be a new Doctor by the fourteenth season anyway.

I didn't say I was leaving the fandom. I was expressing my frustration with it right now because of the disrespect I feel is being shown to Jodie.

I would like to see a doctor that wasn't as dramatic, for a change. I am sure he could play non comedic when called for. I also think he'd be the closest thing to a successor to Tom Baker. Ayoade is a good choice (I wanted him to be Q, but it was well cast, just the same).

If not, I would love to see R.E.G. finally return as the Doctor. It will have been 20 years since Scream of the Shalka first appeared by the time the new actor is on screen in the roll, I suspect.

Where their is evidence that leads to her maybe leaving but of course you can't have 100% evidence something has happened until it happens. In the end though none of that matters because common sense says the Actor leaving the role, especially after a season 3 is a good bet with the show so might as well talk about possible candidates should it happen. If it does then well it just means she might leave after the next season and those possible replacement names might still be good options to get job then

. And whoever replaces Jodie someday will see the cycle repeat and during his or her second season people will start talking potential names again as who to replace them. It's like here in America were we are always talking about not just who the President is but who is going to be the next one. Something that starts so early that even though Biden is just elected you still got people talking about the next person up.

You could just not talk about it. I don't, and some do. Its not like it won't happen one day anyway.

Yeah people don't seem to get this. He's never really done any dramatic acting. He's talented and funny but his default setting is droll and that's about it. I've never seen anything to suggest he'd even be interested in Who.

Admittedly this is from 2014 but he terms his acting range as so narrow it barely counts, and also makes the point that he hates being away from his wife and kids for any length of time, so not sure he'd uproot and go live in Cardiff for 8 months of the year!

It is curious that people just assume any actor would kill to be the Doctor when they wouldn't. It's hard work, you don't necessarily get paid a huge amount, relatively speaking compared to all the other work you could be doing while you're locked into working on Who 8/9 months a year (Outside of a Who Do You Think You Are and a short film Jodie has done nothing but Dr Who since 2017), and there's always the risk that you'll be typecast.

Now the flipside is also true. It's regular work (never underestimate how important that is to a jobbing actor) and a huge role that raises your profile and likely offers opportunities you wouldn't have had otherwise, and you'll probably always make money on the convention circuit if nothing else for the rest of your life!

But it won't appeal to everyone, and you're highly unlikely to get a big name wanting to do the job--heard Eddie Redmayne's name being bandied about again but that seems highly unlikely. Olivia Colman's not likely for the same reasons. These people have work piling up so unless they happen to be a huge Who fan, what's the temptation?

Let's be honest, whoever (and whenever) the next Doctor is they're probably going to be a relatively experienced but maybe not that well known actor in their 30s/40s (Jo Martin for example!) looking to get a step up in their career, or a much older actor with a solid body of (mainly) televisual work maybe looking for one last shot at the big time.

But like most of us I'm only guessing so it'll probably be Gillian Anderson or Chiwetel Ejiofor

Part of the tricky process in predicting and guessing the next possible actor is that such a choice is tied with the initial characterization of the Doctor and what their eventual arc will be.

Sylvester McCoy made sense as the initial clownish incarnation as well as the eventual chessmaster putting on a comedic façade to hide his plans. Peter Capaldi had the range and experience to be the colder and harsher Doctor that would become the warmer and inspirational figure explaining the value of kindness.

I mean I wouldn't mind a quasi-return to a Doctor that's a bit more of a debonair professional type ala Pertwee that slowly gets a little more disheveled and less vain over time; so someone like a Naveen Andrews could probably pull of both if he was cast.

I can see either Greg Davies or Little Alex Horne working in the role.

Alex Horne isn't an actor, and while Davies has done a lot of comic acting roles, probably more than Ayoade, he again has limited experience of dramatic roles, and there's more to the Doctor than being funny and quirky. Of course people can surprise you and many comedians have proven themselves more than capable of playing straight roles but really I'd say whoever plays the Doctor needs range more than anything.

I doubt they'll go with a white male for awhile, but if they did Bertie Caval from Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell would be an ok choice.
