^ I think that was just in the reimagined version. In the original the whole thing went down on the casino planet with Mr. T.

I don't think RO is a fan film. But "dark and gritty" is kind of a fan film calling card.

I'm told some fan films use naughty words to show how "edgy" they are.

I don't think it is a fan film either, and I think it is willing to go places that fan films usually will not go.
Of course it is a professionally written and produced film. The criticism is that it has the sensibilities and falls into many of the tropes of a fanfilm. Things like:

Telling an unnecessary backstory to fill in what some hardcore fans see as a plot hole while playing fast and loose with the details anyways: check.
Bringing back the greatest hits villains played by less competent actors: check.
Creating EVEN COOLER never-before-seen ships, Storm troopers, etc. check
Completely unnecessary but extremely cool Darth Vader action sequence. check
Completely unnecessary cameos. check
Bad jokes. check
Tragic ending where everyone dies so they don't fuck up continuity. check

Was it really necessary to give main protagonists that fate? So what if they didn't appear in the three OT films? They couldn't fit every single member of the Rebel Alliance in those films anyway. Disney couldn't make one or two more movies with them.

There fate was predetermined by dialogue from A New Hope. It isn't like they couldn't be used in comics or films, but it was clear that anyone directly connected with stealing the plans was dead already. Otherwise Vader would have been after them, or their would have been other ways to find the Rebel base and or get the plans to the Rebellion. Since Princess Leia was Vader's only link and the Alliances only hope for getting the Death Star plans to the Rebellion, that kind of seals the fates of the Rogue One team before they even became a concept.

Well in the original story way before scripting and the like, before they got approval to kill everyone off, Jyn and Cassian survived. They didn't think they would be allowed to kill everyone.

Jyn and Cassian (who had a different name at the time) make it to an escape pod and hide in the wreckage of their ship.

So that would be one way to save them. Make everyone think they're dead.

I wish they would have lived too, but I imagine that many would cry "Foul" over the continuity error. As it was, the whole Tantive IV sequence already raises my continuity ire.

The novel seems to convey that Darth Vader thinks of the Tantive IV as an escape craft for the Profundity, rather than a separate ship. So the transmissions were beamed to that ship, from a certain point of view. :D
